(off topic: my parents didn't take me to the circus many times, maybe 2 or 3 times. But when they did, it was a blast)

The man was really short, a midget, and someone had been cutting off his walking stick to make it seem that he was getting bigger. And since he couldn't read and write, it was very unlikely he'd get a job someplace else. Out of despair, the man committed suicide.
(this sounds very familair, I'm sure I heard another version of this sometime in the past)
