Poll Question:
What is the WORST decision in Heroes developing history?

Ok, so I would like to ask you, what do you think is the single worst decision ever made by a Heroes developing team during the course of the game history?

I've tried to select some worthy candidates, if there's something else that comes to mind, feel free to elaborate.

When there are no options from Heroes 3 or prior, it's not because I think Heroes 3 was a perfect game, but because until then, it seems to be steadily improving, which (imo) has not been the case for later versions.

Responses:
No unit upgrades (Heroes 4)
Heroes on battlefield (Heroes 4)
Infernepolis (Heroes 4)
Abandoning Heroes 3 universe and characters (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)
Reducing number of factions (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)
No seperate Might and Magic heroes (Heroes 5)
Cutscenes rather than dialogue boxes when playing campaigns (Heroes 5)
Taking Heroes OFF battlefiend (Heroes 5 and 6)
Reducing number of resources (Heroes 6)
Abandoning initiative system (Heroes 6)

Infernepolis was an aberration to both Necropolis and Inferno players. This castle should never ever have been made

I was tempted to vote Heroes on the battlefield but I must say that I loved that idea, I only hated the way it was done. With some tweaking it could have been a great feature.

this goes for most. The worst were almsot never the decisions: Just how they were done...

Well I tried to exclude things that had only to do with balancing.

I can't make up my mind what to vote myself.

The worst decision IMO was ignoring Wake of Gods mechanics, achievements and source (fan made)

If professionals looked into that, they would see how a game can be released with thousand optional features, easy to mod, easy to change in whatever you want (IE Civilization-Firaxis), easy to add and improve any feature you wish and such. A full moddable sequel would then show to developers what exactly players want for next game versions, simply by studying their mods and taking it as a base work.

I don't say they should release a second Wake of Gods, but only take example from its resources and options, then improve and get a stable version.

Only going for the CHOICE itself here, I took no unit upgrades. Of these it was the one that I would have liked least however it was done, I suppose.

The others I feel could have been really good indeed. For example infernopolis: Was it soo bad on itself: No it was bad in the circumstances: the ugly, weird venom spawn which I almost never took since it would have meant to drop vampires. The necromancer as hero which meant a focus on udneads. Etc. etc. But that was a general H4 problem imo. Great ideas but done so bad they became more annoying than good. I think infernopolis could, f.e., be better without creature choice...

Infernopolis was in really bad taste. Other decisions I can understand or at the very worst were interesting to see implemented even if they did not turn out very well. But I think the worst for me were lack of might or magic heroes, abandoning old universe, no upgrades and no text boxes. Hard to tell which I disliked more.

I voted for heroes on battlefield which came together with having creature armies without heroes!
[what a cumbersome micro-management thing that created & a nightmare for programming AI]

The option I really pick is not listed:
Trying to revolutionise everything like in H4 without adequate money/time/testing which led to hopeless AI that didnt even gather resources & bad gameplay etc.

I'm also going to say H6 seems to me like H4.2
Some of the best features (imo) from H5tote 3.1 (initiative/4 fairly well matched spell schools/skillwheel/balanced factions/well thought-out racials/2 upgrades) seems to be dumped out the window now.

I say the above paragraph in the hope that things will go ok (the power of prediction is that they are often wrong)

When it comes to the game itself, putting heroes on the battlefield was easily the worst decision.

I also hated having cut-scenes instead of text boxes, and the scrapping of the old universe.

I think putting heroes on battlefield was not SO bad as everyone seems to think. It was the first time they were HEROES instead of commanders^^ But it was one of those H4-decisions. SKPRIMUS is probably right. The worst decision was to change everything with H4, but doing it bad. Reminds me of quite some political decisions with every change of governing parties

I go with resource reduction, because ever since I played HOMM, this has never ever changed.
Heroes on the battlefield was a quite good idea, compared to others in HOMM4, it was just unortohdox (personally, the reason why I played a lot with HOMM4 was the fact that heroes could hack)
Erasing Inferno was not a bad idea either, but if that was the intention they should have done it completely.
No upgrades was unorthodox as well, but should have given the opportunity to mix strategies like alternate upgrades in ToE. It was one of the most confusing aspects in HOMM4, but not a such drastic mistake.
Cut scenes is not that worse than dialogue boxes IMHO, even though it is by far the most attention whoring element.

Key:
-not so bad
-bad
-very bad
-it's so bad enough I can't tell how bad is

No unit upgrades (Heroes 4)---
Upragrades give diversity to a races,it's one of the most awful ideas, upragrades are much, much better than h4 sistem
Heroes on battlefield (Heroes 4)---
well not so bad...
Infernepolis (Heroes 4)---
The wrost idea!Deads hate demons!Necropolis haven't nothing, nothing in common, demons are alive, undeads are...well dead. The necropolis is my favourite town and I hate more than other faction Inferno!
Abandoning Heroes 3 universe and characters (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)---
Why they change the history every time, personal I hate h5 history and they want to continue it in h6.Heroes 3 had a perfect history, perfect world.
Reducing number of factions (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)---
More factions, more fun and more diversity.Games need diversity and originality. You will be bored by these factions faster, than where are more.Heroes 3 had the many factions,9 when in H6 are announced just 6
No seperate Might and Magic heroes (Heroes 5)---
It just weird, some factions have a magic class and others have a might one.Heroes 3 and 4 had the best class sistem
Cutscenes rather than dialogue boxes when playing campaigns (Heroes 5)---
Just don't care...
Taking Heroes OFF battlefiend (Heroes 5 and 6)---
Again just don't care...
Reducing number of resources (Heroes 6)---
the game need diveristy also at resources, not just to creatures and factions...
Abandoning initiative system (Heroes 6)---
the fastest move first...

I never like heroes on the battlefield and I'm still skeptical about the resource reduction, but they are all overshadowed by the horror that is the Infernopolis. *shudders*

---- No unit upgrades (Heroes 4)
In heroes 1 there weren't upgrades too. And i think it's a pretty good point in both games

---- Heroes on battlefield (Heroes 4)
Somebody like, somebody dislike, but it refreshes gameplay pretty good.

---- Infernepolis (Heroes 4)
NecroInferno is my second most favorite faction in H4 after barbarians. No, that's absolutely not so bad.

---- Abandoning Heroes 3 universe and characters (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)
Pretty bad, but after cutting out Forge town  the natural way that things go was broken. Fans killed H3 universe

and about old M&M universe and ASHAN... ASHAN sucks But there is no such point in the poll

---- Reducing number of factions (Heroes 4, 5 and 6)
No! H1 has 4 factions and was great! H2 has 6 as H4. Only H3 has 9 factions. But H5 shows, that more factions not equal good factions (i.e. boring Fortress)

---- No seperate Might and Magic heroes (Heroes 5)
Only was in H3 and H4.
So... H1 H2 H5 jn one hand and H3 H4 H6 on other. I really don't know.
In H1 it works well, in h5 not so well but still.

---- Cutscenes rather than dialogue boxes when playing campaigns (Heroes 5)
And that is what I hate about H5. So Ugly...
I'll pick up this variant.

You can probably guess my choice, although H5 is what eliminated the "H3 universe", not H4. Secondary is the loss of textboxes. They would've really helped H5.

I think the Infernopolis had potential for better implementation, and I enjoyed the faction's grim atmosphere, not to mention its campaign storyline with Gauldoth (who didn't?), so I couldn't vote that one. That said, I don't want those factions mixed ever again.

Yep. Necroinferno was good, but only for H4. It will not fit in other games.

ISABEL

Aside from that, I think the Infernopolis was a bad idea.  As to upgrades, I never really liked them until Heroes 5.  It just seemed like a waste of resources to build a unit that I was only going to have to shell out more resources for a few turns.
