That would be a proper townscreen, the crap they have presently is nothing short of a sick joke.

hum let me see , between a town screen that will amuse me for 2 games and then force me for years  to press ESC every damn time I enter a city and a town screen where I can actually manage my cities while looking at their surroundings , keeping an eye on the minimap what should I choose ?

Obvious answer : please don t make those town screen back or at least with an option to shut them off !

I'm sure everyone would be happy if we were presented with an option to toggle the town screen on/off. (given a choice whether you want a town screen or a town window).

But then again I'm almost certain someone has already suggested this, but I haven't heard a reasonable reason why such an option should not be implemented.

You are referring to previous HoMM titles? I don't know how you managed your cities then, if you pressed ESC everytime you entered one, since managing your cities and (for the largest part) armies was done from those town screens.

Registered here just so that I could post this. I am deeply disappointed with the new town screens. For me, full-sized interactive town screens are a huge part of the game; they make the game so much more than just "ride around on the horse and fight things."

I am also disappointed with UbiHole's game of rope-a-dope. On the one hand, they admit that they have no interest in improving the town screens, saying that they don't want town building and town beautification to be the focus. On the other hand, they are disingenuously trying to stifle fan anger with coy remarks like "well, we haven't ruled out changing the town screens in patches or expansions."

I've been with this series since Heroes I and I was initially so excited about the sixth installment of the game. But speaking for me and my friends, we will not be buying the game without full-sized interactive town screens upon release. I am confident that UbiHole will hold out hope so that fans buy the game up front; then no improvements to the town screens will be made and the scoundrels will laugh all the way to the bank.

I realize there is a petition, but isn't there something else that we can do to avert these awful town windows? We succeeded years ago in shutting down The Forge. What will it take to have the devs meet our demands now?

Two death threats instead of one?

But hey, (just in case people can't tell I'm joking) let's not go there.
And I share your concern/stance about the game.

I know what he means. When your hero enters a city, the game automatically enters the town screen. This is often useful - you often move a hero to a city because you want something from it. Recruit reinforcements, or purchase a spellbook. Or when you enter a just conquered city - no doubt you want to know what's inside.

However, it's often annoying:
- when you just want to visit to learn spells
- when you want to park a hero to spend a day at Mage Guild
- when you don't want to recruit anything (no money, or save money, or there's no one to recruit). And when you already have the spellbook. This is quite common.
In these cases I immediately press ESC.

Anyway, it could easily be solved. Hold down Control and left click on a city (diagonal horse icon).

Heroes has a  quite good interface, which is not to say it's perfect. Heroes 1 interface is a little cumbersome, Heroes II added a lot of useful improvements. Can't think of a Heroes III interface improvement I need, I guess "put hero to sleep" is the only one.

And "money and resources" will likely be the reason I skip Heroes 6. Tough luck, if you're in the business of making fun games expect to spend some resources. What I look for in a game is not low production cost, but high value.

What annoys me the most now is that they used that flimsy excuse of "TSs slowing down the game", while they were adding those pompous and useless conversion animations (that play even for goddamn dwellings) and cutscenes for might heroes, that you can't even turn off.
Nice speeding up the game you've done there, Ubi.

I've also said several times that I won't be buying the game without full screen, dynamic, interactive town screens. And I'm a very patient person.
The money and resources answer was regarding making a dual option. I think it's a lame excuse, because they know we've complained about this for almost a year now. I guess they hoped it would fade, like the copied creatures raging did.

There is no good reason for the windows, they just didn't think of them as that important, and since everything in the game is in a window they made the town screen that way too...

Speaking of the CnP creatures, I am still enraged. But since nobody brought this topic up fo a while (along with the human heroes in non-human factions), it would be quite odd to express my complies every now and than in the middle of a discussion about something totally different.
And since talking about town screens, I would change one more thing - the music. To me, the town themes are boring, uninteresting, and - in the case of Necropolis - incredibely annoying.

I am also still on the "not preordering until I see town screens" camp, been there since May.

I completely agree with the sentiments of jitzuthemonk above, I joined these fora exactly for the same reason (frustration towards town screens and the castration of town building in general).

For me both the reduction of the rare resources and the lack of town screens are symptoms of the same disease: The deliberate shift of the successful Heroes recipe into an action-packed RPG/dueling wannabe that nobody asked for.

Yeah, I also think I'll hold back on buying the game to see what happens, with the bug rate people report from the beta, the first release will probably be unplayable anyway, not to mention balance issues.

About the Copy/Paste creatures, I think a lot of us had hopes that they actually gave in and changed the Light and Water Elementals - a belief fueled by the none-disclosure of artworks for those creatures, but come to think of it, there probably were no unique artworks made for those, since they are just copies of the Glory and the Water Spirit. At least they made the Light elemental a different colour, and I guess it's not too late for them to actually change them.

Hmm maybe Glories and Spring Sprites where called simply elementals? In a process of game development they changed their mind. But it was to late for a change.

At larger scale the same thing happened with Conflux.
In my opinion this is a minor inconvenient. But still.

5 unique resources gave to each faction a little flavor. I could imagine it would be hard to make them work with Area of Control.

And back to the town windows. If they do not fix them in first 3 months after release it could be quite disastrous to the game.
Also they need to fix them in a patch not in a expansion otherwise it would be like an robbery.

In September, user Znork said they will release an video explaining some things. Also they should be some Znork Q&A videos.

@Negativland, they focused on multiplayer when they said simplifying town screens will speed up games. Plus, it's the campaign. You got messages in H3 regarding the story, right?

I'm not talking about campaign / story cutscenes. Those are cool and make sense. I'm all for those. I'm referring to the town conversion animations and might heroic strikes. The conversion cutscenes are especially annoying, repetitive and completely useless. But I'm guessing we'll be able to disable them in the final game (at least I hope so).

VIP's from gamecom were told by UBI that developers will show fans something which will please everyone. I wonder if this is it.

Dridri, one of the VIP from Archangel Castle made a summup of what will happen (like Znork, he's tied by the VIP NDA, so he didn't talk about the "cool stuff he's not allowed to talk about" ofc

1. We'll get a video Q&A in which each VIP who was at the Gamescon asked 2 question and the MMH6 team answered them.

2. We'll get an extended written Q&A in which they answered many of the questions gathered by VIP from various communities.

3. Later, the dev team will write some articles explaining why they made some choices (skilltrees, strategic aspects of the game, etc...)

Dridri added that among these articles there would be a news that would please everyone (ABSOLUTELY everyone), but he refuses to tell more

i think that the townscreen and towns in general as well as resource cut are caused by slight change of direction...

you see they even mentioned in latest Q&A vid that they want Heroes to be strategy not economy game, so what did they do?
step one: cut some gumpf from resources - now this is simpler less time spent in marketplace more on the map killing stuff.
step two: simplify towns - now they are streamlined and you can easily choose your building strategy without worrying about some special prereqs and in turn you spend more time on the map.
step three: we want ppl out there in the wild, let's cut the art from town screens - they look nice but you can't fiddle with them, you are forced to do what you wanted to do and go kill stuff.

i'm sure that not every die-hard fan will like it (i for once didn't mind the bigger economic aspect) but hey, it's a new game and if this is their direction for it so be it.
