i'm sure that not every die-hard fan will like it (i for once didn't mind the bigger economic aspect) but hey, it's a new game and if this is their direction for it so be it.

Just because it's a new game doesn't allow them to butcher it. This game will only benefit from its name, but it's far from having the HoMM touch.

i think that the townscreen and towns in general as well as resource cut are caused by slight change of direction...

you see they even mentioned in latest Q&A vid that they want Heroes to be strategy not economy game, so what did they do?
step one: cut some gumpf from resources - now this is simpler less time spent in marketplace more on the map killing stuff.
step two: simplify towns - now they are streamlined and you can easily choose your building strategy without worrying about some special prereqs and in turn you spend more time on the map.
step three: we want ppl out there in the wild, let's cut the art from town screens - they look nice but you can't fiddle with them, you are forced to do what you wanted to do and go kill stuff.

That's exactly what I have been saying since the town screen discussion first sparked.
The dumbing down of towns is deliberate, not simply lazy design as many people on these boards seem to believe. It became absolutely clear when Le Breton spoke in one of the early videos about the shift from "town builder to commander in battle". An outrageously naive idea, as it essentially removes a core element from the Heroes experience: resource & kingdom management.

It's this "new direction" of the game that has kept me from preordering so far. If they indeed plan to return proper town screens and graphically distinct buildings, it simply means that they are starting to realize the extent of their folly.

If they indeed wanted to get rid of the economical aspects and make it a more strategical game, then they would have to have let go of the HoMM title. Name it something else, and I would probably buy it - without considering it to be HoMM. But since it has the title HoMM, it can only lead to disappointment if the gamestyle is different from its predecessors.

I would compare it to what they've done in the past to the X-Com series and the Commandos series of games, which both went the way of the first person shooter. Different gamestyle, and they lost fans by droves.

They did change the name, from HoMM to MM:H

Well, I can't think of anything else that can please absolutely everyone. And I think he might have meant town screens since he put so much emphasis on "absolutely". Could be a hint. I guess we'll see next week.

Then this game is the first in the new series, so it should be named MM:H1!

As for the X-Com game, dunno. I devoured X-Com 1&2, really liked 3 once I got used to it, but I let every subsequent title go by me because of the changes they made to the gameplay mechanic. As it is, the new X-Com game is a sort of 1st person shooter, set in the 50's. You play an agent of the FBI, who starts to investigate alien incursions or something. In my opinion, it has nothing to do with the turn-based strategy game(s) that I loved over a decade ago.

Got around to play the demo, finally. Great game and all but I'm bitterly disappointed with the Town Screens. I knew they were going to be a disappointment even since it first got out that they're not in 3D. And that got reinforced by the news that they don't even stretch to full screen and they're not interactive. But I never expected they would look THAT bad... I played the demo without any expectations for good town screens but still their ugliness overwhelmed me.

Now, I'm fairly sure that nothing can be done to fix them, and make them in the least to look a little bit better. Not even the ability to stretch them to full screen, will make them look any better. No, actually that would make them look worse... In that part of the game, UbiHole has failed miserably. And to think that's perhaps the second or third most important part of the game for the fans of the series!

In the end of it all, I would have rathered them stick to their original of having no town screens at all than these... abominations. This game will be remembered negatively mainly for this. The good parts of it seem unimportant in front of how bad do the Town Screens look.

Must be because it's the demo, but the H6 town windows take ages to load up, where-as H5 screens load-up in an instant, lol

Yeah, I noticed that too. Isn't it ironic? They butchered the towns in order to make the game go faster but instead its slower than ever!

I also find it more difficult to navigate the town windows, though maybe it's just me.

What I notice about the town window is that it removes the ability to create unique, interesting structures.  The Artifact Merchant has to become a part of the Marketplace, because it's too difficult to create a modal window with a unique interface for a half-dozen unique buildings for each faction, within the already appearing pop-up that is the town window.

In a full screen view, there was a lot more room for unique structures having their own interface, and there were more UI options for how to display them.  What we have right now are tabs.

Tabs.

There is no difference between an Inferno and a Stronghold with these windows.  The buildings only have an effect on numbers, not gameplay.  And to me, that's where they really fail.

It's funny to look back at their WIP windowscreenshots and see that literally nothing has changed.
