No, a year ago there were NO town screens

H6 was unveiled in August last year. One of the first screenshots showed the town window. They said it was a placeholder, but pretty much the only significant thing that has changed is that they replaced the old concept art picture of the town with a real 3D model on the screen (which looks like crap lol)

How exactly did you find H5 UI "clunky"?
Too easy to misclick (especially in battle) and the camera needed to be rotated all the time, especially underground.

Potential for misclicking is still a minor issue imo. But I think some of those things will be improved for final release.

Regarding the town window - along with the map it gives the impression that you are looking at a satellite shot of a certain area on Google Maps and click on some landmark to see a high-res photo of the thing worth seeing if you intend to go there. The feeling it creates is exactly the same - remoteness, no immersion whatsoever.

Here are my impressions so far -

Positive
- The graphics and the music themes are excellent.
- The campaign looks very promising.
- The game runs very smoothly, even for a beta, may be the RAM demand is a litle higher than H5, but on the bright side the AI turns are way much faster and we won't need to worry about XL and huge maps anymore.
- The creatures are very detailed, their animations in most cases are very successful.
- The Area of Control works pretty good IMO.

So far, so good Now some constructive critics

Negative
- THE UI - everything is SO SMALL. First - the close button on each window - it's so small that you can miss it. All in all this applies for all other buttons. I just don't get the idea - with todays monitor resolutions there is plenty of space.
- About the town windows...I just hope that they are alpha 0.0.0.1 pre release version...
- I'm sharing the opinion of alci that the ability tree is a step back, and it just complicate things instead of simplifying them.
- There is too many hero and creature stats but that's the result of the new ability tree.
- Again a note about the UI - on the combat map when you cast a spell or use some ability that boosts some creature stats...you can't really tell whats going on when you see the creature info window - all you see are plenty of small icons (no text labels) with some stats, no indication whatsoever that for example the attack of the creature is increased or decreased.
- The creature tier system is a little confusing (at least for now, I can't wait for a fan's made manual ).

That's for now

Then maybe you should try ... to hover your mouse cursor above and open your eyes and learn to read ?

There was a bug that was indeed NOT showing the icons at all, but if you saw the icons, then you were just too lazy to check because EVERYTHING appeared in the tooltip

In H5 the stats that are increased are shown in green color, respectively the decreased - in red. And there are text labels like "Attack", "Defense" etc.... In the H6 UI everything is little icons and icon tooltips...no text labels at all, which is annoying because you can't have a quick and clear look at the stats..

I sorta covered my opinion in the other H6 Beta thread, but (as long as I respect the NDA) there's no harm to expand on that, right?(WITHOUT spoilers)

I really liked some things, actually fell in love with a yet unannounced feature/bug(not sure which, but fun nonetheless ), didn't really get the hang of some other things, I welcomed the trademark Heroes-feel, didn't mind a few other things, and hated the living daylight out of one thing-it actually angered me so much, sometimes I quit the game out of spite. Okay, I'll stop now, because the NDA scares me like no other thing.

(Elvin/Ceph:If You find anything bordering on NDA stuff, please notify me, and I'll delete it immediately. I really tried to not give away anything, though.)

That doesn't worry me so much.  If you buy the game, all of the icons will be described in the manual - so at most, you'll have to look things up once, and that's it.

Yes, I think one got used to the stat icons pretty fast, that was never really an issue for me.

I will have to agree with that some stuff in the UI is very messy.

My problems with the UI:

1. The looks of it. It looks BORING. There is no creativity.

2. It is now much harder to see if a creature has a debuff or buff on it.

3. And yeah, you can't see increased/improved stats which sucks.

I'm not worried, I'm just not quite happy with this over minimalistic user interface. I agree, it's clean and stylish and all the icons will be described and we'll learn their meaning but why 16x16 px? That's the smallest possible size...why not 32x32 px?

Aaa, one more thing - where can you actually see the weekly growth of the creatures in the castle?? I just can't find such thing anywhere...

Creatures descriptions were also unavailable  and the heroes ones too. Then again i am being optimistic that most of the negatives are related to  the pre-beta and not the actual game (the real beta included, though i still expect things to go wrong in that too).

The creature ability descriptions were kinda hit or miss. Sometimes they would appear, others they wouldn't show at all.

Do you know if the X "values" on the abilities will be replaced with numerical ones in the public beta? Will be nice to have some leads for the balancing.

Pfui The AI is a little dumb it seems...on the multiplayer map in certain situations it falls into some sort of endless loop and I have to kill the game. After that, the last saves are broken...very unfortunate

About the X values I'm sure that they'll be replaced...it seems also that certain creature abilities are not working (do nothing) which is also unfortunate...ooh well, we have to wait a couple of months

Little off-topic - does anybody knows if there will be a fans manual like the H5 one?

The Heroes V fan manual came into being because the official one was a joke. That said, I hope a fan manual won't be needed in the first place.

I found that when i killed an empty ai hero the turn after the one of the ai players would never finish its turn. Obvious bug ofcourse and i doubt it will still be in the real beta.

I hope that someone from UBisoft is reading the forum right now, because I have the TOE official manual and, like you said, it's a joke. However, it's very doubtful that this final delay will be enough for a proper manual.

With the updated tooltips it will probably not be essential but it's always nice to a guide for quick reference. Plus you can't have all the formulas show in the game, for instance nobody ever needed to know that attack gives exactly 5% for each stat above the enemy's defense.
