I'm not playing BETA, but I am hoping you guys can answer this question:  Is the world map too empty?

As a map maker, when I saw the great reduction in resources & dwelling variety, I immediately thought the maps would be too bland.  I'm hoping this isn't the case though.

It's not empty, you can probably fill it up and create some great looking places, but it is rather repetative. Real special buildings are missing, after 3 new games they should really try to include some WoG buildings, or copy every H5 one, at the very least.

I am actually playing on my first multiplayer map now against the AI (completed all the campaign missions first) and about a month has passed in my game and yes, I am a bit short on all resources. I was very suprised to see how expensive the Elite dwellings and upgrades are, and all that creatures you get at the end of the week also costs a lot.
Actually when you max the income from the town, everything becomes pretty affordable, at least as far as the gold is concerned.

How is the interface? Is it clunky like it was in H5, or has it been improved?

The UI isn't bad, although I imagine it will be more prettified in the final release, and the tooltips don't work as well as I'd like them to.  (again, that's likely just a bug of the beta).

I actually like the interface a lot. It is very clean and simple, you can even make shortcuts with your spells and even make a short cut to the building pad on the town window (i'm sure we knew that we could make shortcuts, so its not breaking the NDA).

so yeah, I like the UI a lot
theres a lot open space and its very convenient

Did anyone else feel compelled to skip story mode-related dialogue? Even though it was a tutorial, it felt extremely cluttered already. It was one "tl;dr" after another.

Yeah, I did skip some lines but we know from a screenshot from the new version of the beta that some of that dialogue has been reworked into in-game cutscenes, which should be more enjoyable.

Oh, that's good.

Hmm, I suppose the balance of my critique has been a bit unfair... I've started to enjoy it a little more, I've found. Gotten used to some of the subtleties, gotten into a rhythm, much like a classic Heroes title.

All-in-all, I'm beginning to feel like I can get into an actual rhythm here, unlike Heroes V. I'm starting to understand the purpose of the streamlined town screen... to let things go faster. In Heroes I-IV, I always felt like I could keep a steady rhythm, but in Heroes V that was lost, because there were loading times (even in entering towns), which was non-existent in the previous games. Now it seems like the overall gameplay experience is one, consistent beat. That is going to go a long way in the final analysis.

I played a bit more and I can certainly say that the creature animations during battle seriously need a speed boost. After about 20 battles the game almost becomes boring because during about 30-40% of the time you are waiting for something to move its lazy ass through half of the battlefield and attack (the Harpies and the Griffins in particular are a real pain, I would refuse to attack them just to avoid the horrible waiting time for their animations to start, enter middle phase and finish - and yes, it's THAT bad).
On the other hand the AI seems to be behaving competently and will probably serve as an adequate opponent. That's mainly on the battle map however, I can't say about its strategical aspect.

Those of you annoyed with the slow speed of creature animations, please note there's a setting to substantially speed them up in the options.

That's the first thing I did. It only needs to go to about a third or half of max and it's fine for me.

A couple of the animations are relatively tedious at any speed though. Most notably (going to say this as other people above haven't been slapped for similar things), the dreamwalker/dreamreaver's earth and sky animation seems to last forever when cast on an opposing stack.

Did you find yourself short of resources (other than gold) to continue building?  Or did you always have enough ore/wood/blood ?  I'm very curious about this.

Wood and Ore seems to be in demand in the current build, but I guess they are likely to adjust building costs, so I don't think we can conclude much from that.

How exactly did you find H5 UI "clunky"? I think UI is pretty similar to H5 in many ways, except that many icons are completely not-intuitive. But you learn your way around pretty fast.

Town Screen =/= Long loading times, and it's the loading times that were nonexistent in Heroes I-IV, not Town Screens, therefore the ridiculous Town Windows have NO justification AT ALL.

Ubisoft has mentioned that the game will run more smoothly and be less buggy than Heroes V, hence Town Screens wouldn't have long loading times in the first place...and EVEN IF there was such a magically-unavoidable issue, even a classic 2D Town Screen would be more enjoyable and aesthetically satisfying than the stupid Windows...

...so can someone explain why they were implemented, and why there is seemingly no action to improve them after the evident outrage in Heroes Websites like HC?

This is no longer an issue, from what I've experienced so far.

I do miss the full screen Town view.  The way it's set up now kind of feels a bit like Civilization - you build something, and you know it did something, but it isn't readily apparent.  I definitely preferred the screen from I-IV, but I don't think it's going to come back.
