Vlad chuckled at Kane's remark. He then took a deep breath.
- Comrade, listen to this old man. When someone falls in love with you they don't give a sh!t about who you are or what you do. I think that Melony really is into you. She kinda reminds me of Natalya. I had cancer, then I volounteered for the Project LEGION. She was with me all the time. supported me. No matter what I did. She was there for me. always. I think Melony feels the same way about you comrade. of course, it's better for you not to tell what we were doing tonight. It would be better for her to stay blissfully ignorant.

Melony knocked politely on the door. Again. "Hello, is anyone out there?" The hallway was still empty apparently, though there might just be a really well trained guard standing there. "I'm about done with all this nano-bot shenanigans and I think that I can walk about now..." Really, Melony had only been a little short of breath. Hardly anything to get this worked up about. Seriously, she had worse a few times now. "I might break down the door if I don't get to walk around soon~" It could be nuke proof, hell it could be Armageddon proof for all she cared. The damn door was getting out of her way and she was going for a short jog. And then she was finding a god be damned phone.

Lara loved Chinese food, and felt her stomach rumble at the thought. She walked around the cabinet and looked at the chessboard. She concentrated hard on the paper bag containing the Chinese food and managed to unfurl the top. The paper moved softly at first and then ripped violently, two boxes falling out onto the table. Both Jon and Lara dived to catch the falling boxes. "Sorry", Lara whispered apologetically. She felt dispirited at her failure to control her telekinetic movements. However, she joked "best I don't get the chopsticks, huh".
Taking a box of noodles and a fork, she sat crossed-legged on the floor in front of the fully assembled chessboard. She chose Black.

Lara gave Jon a sly smile, "best not to mention that I was school chess champion, then huh", (she lied, she just wanted to rib him a little). Lara tucked into her food with relish.
Lara and Jon spent several hours playing chess. Jon patiently coaxed and encouraged Lara, picking up the flying chess pieces and never complaining when several pieces hit him in the head or landed in his food. Jon helped Lara to understand her breathing techniques, the calm mind cleansing practices, enabling her to control her powers better. Very soon, they were engrossed in a telekinetic battle of wills, both of them not moving physically, just concentrating on moving the pieces flawlessly and steadily through the air with Lara eventually boxing-in Jon's King and toying with him before forcing his resignation.

"Ah! You got me." said Jon with a laugh as he cleaned up the board and set it back in its original place. "You are learning very quickly, not to mention that you are certainly a better chess player than I."
Jon stood up and telekinectically moved the remains of their dinner into a nearby trashbin, where a burst of flame popped up and turned it to ashes. Jon summoned the ashes to him and covered it with his hands as they glowed brightly for a couple of seconds. Jon then uncovered his hands, revealing a piece of paper with an inscribed seal of a twisting flame over it's shadow. Under it said "Ex Umbram Flammarum Surgimus." From Shadow to Flame we Rise.
"You have more than proven yourself, Lara." said Jon as he handed the paper to Lara. "You could even become greater than Carrie with a little practice. We could use you. In fact, these days, we'll need you. Welcome to the Secret Fire, Lara."

Lara watched, entranced at Jon's actions. He was so comfortable and used to his powers, everything he did moved so seemlessly, it made her wish to learn his ways. But when Jon handed her the piece of paper and seal, Lara's heart skipped a beat. She went to take the the paper, but stopped, cleared her mind, feeling the strength grow within her core and breathing slowly, she telekinetically took the paper from Jon. They both watched the paper float through the air from Jon's open hand, hovering in front of Lara before she took it from the air.
Lara smiled bashfully and tried not to blush ... she felt exhilarated with just a hint of trepidation.

Jon smiled said to her, "I'm glad that you took it. We are a family, the Secret Fire. We have many safehouses and freedom fighters across the city, but only two supers are even close to your potency. One of those is of course, Carrie, and then there is Felix. He is the official head of the Secret Fire and a powerful telepath. I am not officially lead it, but I am his right hand, and do most of the work and thus am recognized more as a leader than he is. Most freedom fighters stay in the safehouses spread throughout the city, but you have a special role and a special privilege here. Right now only the two of us know about this place."
Jon walked to a seemingly blank wall and raised his hands with open palms. His hands glowed and the wall disintegrated, revealing a much larger cavern within with an empty pedestal in the center of the room. Light shown down on it from a small opening in the ceiling, illuminating the cavern. "This where the map is. The map to the Catalyst. Do you know what that is, Lara? The Catalyst?"

Lara stepped forward, sheepishly exploring the new cavern. She turned to Jon as he spoke, taking it all in. She knew what a catalyst was, but had an eerie feeling Jon was talking about a person in this case. First off, what Lara wanted to know was ... is this catalyst good or bad?

Jon walked up to the pedastal and drew out a small red ball that looked frozen. "The Catalyst where all of our powers are derived from. Those of us that come by it naturally. Of course, most of us haven't even touched it, but the powers are hereditary, which is how I got mine, but sometimes people that encounter those with powers receive powers later on in life. Some may even carry it, but not have it manifest in them. Yet, they could still pass it along to their children or even people they have sex with. Most gain powers by their parents having unmanifested powers.
"Zero, the greatest villain of the last generation, was the last holder of the Catalyst. His son, Alejandro, also known as Ouroboros had an exceptionally powerful connection with it, while his sister, Lisa, had none. I have always wondered why, but then it hit me. Zero was able to control what effects from the Catalyst were passed on to his children. He placed all of the Catalyst's power in Alejandro while giving Lisa a key in her blood which would reveal where the Catalyst was. And here is the place."
Jon turned to Lara and continued, "With the Catalyst, we will be able to draw even more people to our cause as well exponentially increase the level of power we have, but only to those with the will and mastery to control it, or it will literally tear the city apart. Your role in this will be to build a forcefield around me as I use the Catalyst so that its highly volatile energy wouldn't go outside and possibly harm you and destroy the mansion or more. If it engulfs me and I lose control, do not hesitate to use your power and kill me before something happens. I'm not sure what, but it won't be good. Do you understand?"
Li looked at Miasma and said, "We won't do anything. Just tell us who you are and what exactly happened here."
Miasma growled lowly, "I told you who I am. What happened here? Kane came a hunting some idiotic smugglers and Melony chased after him. A man attacked us and drove Kane and Melony away. I stayed behind to take care or the sniper, assailant, whatever you want to call him. There you go, that's the story," Miasma gives Li a stare and smiles, "as you well know."
"What is he talking about?" asked Jacqueline. "As you well know?"
Li stood dumbfounded thinking, "This...thing knows about my power!"
"I had a suspicion, but...nevermind!" replied Li to Jacquline. He turned to Miasma and said, "Thank you...whoever you are. Could you just tell us what you are? I have not seen one such as you before."
"And you had better pray to whatever gods exist that you never do again." Miasma turned to leave, "There is only one other like me, and it is... not nearly so nice. Oh," It turned its head to look at Li, "if you meat Melony again, tell her that I'm looking for her." It pulled as much energy as it could from Li a second before it said, "Goodbye." For a second it stood there, and then Miasma's body seemed to feel a strong wind and it melted into the shadows along the floor.
Later, elsewhere: Miasma scanned the crowd for a suitable host. One superhuman walked away from the rest, and Miasma... "Pounced." A few seconds of mental struggle later, Miasma walked away in its new body, feeding off of her power. A seer will not be missed. The search for Melony had begun.

Also, what was it about nanites you mention? our medicine, particurally this treatment you have right now uses no such things. I advise you to rest for a while now. In fact, she could almost see the outline of the floor. "That... I..." Setting her jaw, Melony tells the medic, "I'm not sick. I wasn't hurt. I inhaled maybe the barest whiff of that gas. I'm fine. And besides, I don't know if your medicine would really work on me anymore." She holds up her arm, "I'm not entirely human."

The damage done by the gases may be greater than you think. it's chemical compounds were meant to damage the nervous tissue of a super. The treatment restores the damaged tissue to it's normal state. And you have about forty five minutes left before the treatment is over.
Vlad parked the car in the garage.
