Favorite TV series

Since this seems to be de rigeur currently, why not ask for favorite TV shows.
In my humble opinion TV series own movies now for some time - authors are finally realizing the potential since milestones like Cracker and X Files in the 90s, not piling episodes upon each other than could be viewed in any order, without any character development.
Clearly, 24 has been another quantum jump there.
Movies, on the other hand, necessarily concentrate on effects more than ever - a m ovie has to make use of the fact that main viewers sit in a large room in front of a large "screen" and surrounded by a massive sound system, so movies must have an awe factor that capitalizes on that, which means, that story and characters are becoming less important.

So what TV shows do you dig?

I enjoy

Californication

very much currently.
Also

The Sopranos

have been tremendously entertaining.

I like British Crime shows a lot.

Highlights have been

Cracker
Touching Evil
Wire in the Blood

or

Life on Mars (which comes with what is probably the best ending of any TV series ever plus an amazing soundtrack).

Dexter, best TV show there is. Michael C. Hall is the second coming of Jesus, the ultra badass version.

I also watch True Blood and House.

I kind of missed out on TV shows as I only ever once fell into the habit of consistently sitting down to watch the episode at a set time. These days I could stream them online, but I still haven't gotten around to it much. My favorite TV series was Babylon 5.

So true, JJ.  TV shows blow just about everything Hollywood produces anymore out of the water.

Lost (up until the last two seasons anyway)
24 (watch while I exercise, currently on season 5)
Dexter (agreed with Adrius, best show on TV, ever)
True Blood (strange, currently only in season 1)
The Tudors (decent show)
Rome (could have been the best if HBO hadn't short circuited it)
House (probably the best written character on TV, ever)
Spartacus Blood and Sand
Camelot was OK - too bad they won't be doing a second season
Six Feet Under was great as well
Always like Oz but never finished it.

Other shows I want to watch include:
Game of Thrones
Boardwalk Empire
Mad Men

Actually, I'm also looking for a new show to watch while I exercise, as soon as I finish 24.  Was thinking about NCIS - anyone watched?

OK, for me, I'm talking about DvDs. Some shows are impossible to watch on Telly - take 24, for example: you will want to watch them in your own stride.

So, yes, 24 has been a great show - I'm looking for the right moment to watch the finale, my wife isn't too keen on it, since 24 is too much nail-biting for her to be completely comfortable with it.

I've seen the first season of Six Feet Under which I find rather hilarious. We'll continue it.

Mad Men is a pretty ambitioned show - the authors are striving to present the 60s. We found that a bit disappointing - all in all we would have wanted to see more about the business of advertising. If, for example, we would watch a remake of something like Perry Mason, the historic perspective and the private and social life of Perry, Della, and Paul would be important, but we would still want cases. Since I was born in the 50s, we will not continue Mad Men therefore.

My Mom has been watching The Tudors and enjoyed it very much. She's also a fan of NCIS. Because she wouldn't give it a rest, we gave that one a try as well. After the first two seasons our feelings are quite mixed. The first season is a bit trying to find the right form. I don't find it that good, but the show does have its moments.
Surprisingly enough, since I was quite sceptical, Bones is rather interesting.

Boston Legal is a must - William Shatner starring as Danny Crane ... Great.

A really big one has been Lie To Me. Tim Roth is always on the brink of overplaying, but this is a too original a show to miss it out.

Castle is a rather entertaining blend of Crime and Screwball Comedy.

Deadwood is something you shouldn't miss out when you enjoy(ed) the dirty kind of Western - it's pretty hard stuff, as is

The Shield, a cop show like no other.

Lastly (for now) the British New Tricks is an incredibly good mix of Crime and Comedy with great actors and marvellous scripts.

Does that include anime?

If it includes anime then my favorites are anime only:

Azumanga Daioh, Baccano!, Bakemonogatari, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Ghost in Shell: SAC 1+2, Golgo 13, GTO, Hajime no Ippo, Jiguko Shoujo Kaiji, Kino's Journey, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Mushishi, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Shigurui, Shiki. Among many others...

If it doesn't include anime then Dexter and the Walking Dead. But I'm not so excited about them.

I'm an anime fanboy

Lost is, by the way an example for the most serious flaws a good show is prone to develop.

As with everything a good TV Show should end at its peak - and in a satisfactory. The worst thing that can happen is a Season X that is really losing it, gets weak ratings and is discontinued, even though it wasn't planned to end and therefore finishes with a cliffhanger. Another example for that is Dead Zone, which could have been a very nice show, if it had been planned for something like three Seasons and with a conclusive ending.
Instead it ran for six, getting weaker all the time, and simply faded away - basically a waste of time after the very good first season.

The Big Bang Theory. Has there ever been a better character than Sheldon?

Family Guy.
Well, I agree with a lot of Seths political opinions and he is not very subtle about them in Family Guy. I would almost call it indoctrination.

I liked The Event a lot and I thought the cliffhanger in the last episode was awesome, so I am so sad that it was cancelled.

Desperate Housewives - please do not kill me.

Solsidan - Swedish comedy series. First season was better.

Svenska Hollywoodfruar - Swedish reality TV series though the first season was A LOT better. The last season actually made me depressed because one of the Hollywood wives seems like she has some kind of psychotic disorder, and it affects her 8 year old daugther. She also indoctrinates her daughter with religion in the show and in Sweden, you just do not do that. If you raise your children with religion, you are a horrible parent here and I completly agree with that. Stop indoctrinating children, America!

Debatt - A swedish public service show where people debate about recent and relevant events. Very entertaining.

Skolfront - A swedish public service programme about the problems in our schools.

Idol - Swedish version of American Gladiators.

Looking forward to Gladiatorerna, which is the swedish version of american gladiatorss. It is the only show in history which we stole from the United States, and made much better.

This is were I realize that The Event was probably the only relevant tv series I wrote about, and that I misunderstood the topic but am to lazy to rewrite my post.

Also, I've heard that Breaking Bad is very good.

And I've also heard that The Walking Dead is absolutely fantastic.

Meh, so many shows to watch.

I did see Deadwood and it was pretty good, but I kinda lost interest after the 2nd season.

For my exercising I'm looking for something interesting, that has a lot of seasons, and is about 45 minutes per episode.  24 fit that bill really nicely.  May have to check out Boston Legal.  Also considered buying all the X-files seasons, since I haven't seen those in ages.

I watched the first series of Lie to Me, which I really enjoyed.  And if I remember, I'll watch The Big Bang Theory, other than that I can't stand television and only really tune in if there are re-runs of Judge Judy lol.

When I was a kid I used to love watching Farscape.

Walking Dead doesn't count with a 6-episodes 1st season; let's wait until after season 2.

Astonishingly enough, we're going through the X-Files again currently - "currently" being quite loosely defined as in "watching maybe 3 episodes a week".
I think, that even - or maybe especially - in hindsight it's fascinating to see what a great show that was. I mean, a triple-episode linking season 2 and 3.

Fringe tries something like the X-Files again, but I don't think it's better than X-Files.

For good or worse, Breaking Bad is something we'll try in the near future. This is true for Weeds as well.

StarGate and SGA Atlantis (they are far away from others), 24 (that one keeps me in need to watch next, lost so many work days because) and don't laugh, I enjoy a lot Desperate Housewives. Very good dialog scripters and actresses are hot.

Although 24 is teasing my nerves as well, so many unrealistic issues, plain stupid sometimes (that b***ch of Kim is really born under a bad star, she is calling catastrophes on her at every move she does, scrolling slide bar every time I see her)
