Weren't you the same person who said that Heroes V is your first Heroes? I could be mistaken but I'm certain that you hadn't played Heroes III until last year, don't know if you've played Heroes IV, the rest seem out of the question. I wonder how do you define this "Heroes thing" then. 
Anyway, it's never been about the "Heroes thing" and apparently that is what you don't get.
It is the Heroes thing for me. And I guess for everyone. That "thing" is what differs Heroes from other strategy games. It was absent in H4, thus eveyone says it is a un-Heroes Heroes game. It now is absent from H6.
Why would playing the game 2 years ago or 10 years ago matter? I can't have my opinion about H3, because I didn't have a PC when I was 13 and so have been playing it since last year? Absolute nonsense.
And no, I haven't changed my first post, just corrected typos.

TotE added a size beyond XL, the impossible sized map.
Saves & loads work fine. The problem was for a long time that the AI could take forever on XL and bigger maps, but that has been fixed with our AI patch.

What people mention above all comes down to replayability.
H3 and H5 TOE were great games because you could play them over and over, I am not sure how many H5 TOE generated maps my mates and I have played....loads!
With H6, replayabiltiy is a concern as one can get bored with the generic all-factions-can-do-the-same skill trees....Magic factions are the only ones that can do slight variations (with haven prone to light magic, necro to dark magic, etc.)....

Wow, H6 looks to be in the same bad shape it was in the "beta". I haven't bothered to keep updated. Has anything actually changed/improved from the beta?

Version 1.2 is much much better than the beta was.....but still far off from being 100% in the grand scheme of things!

Limbic was brought onto the project approximately halfway through the development. So it is not like they are brand new to the project.
But from what we hear, they have indeed taken over the "main" Developer role from BH.

The game is much more stable, the crucial bugs have been eliminated, balance has been just a little touched but content-wise it's the same. I should mention that balance is still quite off though the coming patches should take care of that in the near future.
