dude, i have released an ass-load of objects that were originally made by other people(not just modders, but from other games, and from any source at all on the net that could be found via a search engine), including the original homm3 creators themselves(as have many here, even the hota team). the hota team has asked that their work not be shared/modified in a way other than which it was originally intended, by anyone, as well(which confuses me, since they do the same exact thing with the original homm3 content). if i were to listen to you(or them, or anybody), i would be setting a precedent for all modders to keep work to themselves, and not share it or modify it(despite the fact we are modders in a gaming community. i hope you see how much sense that WOULDN'T make). and, i'm not about to do that, at all. we are a sharing community here at hc; we're not the types who say "these toys are MINE and you can't play with them if you don't play with them how i want you to play with them!"

now, i offered you the work i did to what YOU did to the original object, and your response was a request for me not to use your work in the first place. that's not very neighborly of you(despite the civility in how you addressed the subject), and that's not the conduct becoming of a free-market modder(and, as i mentioned, that's not how we do things here at hc). and you ask this because you spent a mere 30 minutes on an object, and you don't want to have to go through the trouble of updating ONE graphic for a mod? really? dude, i have spent DAYS on certain objects all by themselves, and as you can see, i've put YEARS into the work i've done, that i share with everyone here, absolutely without a problem.

the most i can do for you, is add you to the credits(because despite being a free-market modder in a free-for-all modding environment, i also have standards of respect). i ask the same thing of anyone who uses work that i myself, modified. and you won't see me getting my panties in a wad if they don't. it's ultimately(and literally) out of my hands, once i share what i work on. i accept that, as you should. that i even took the time to find the author of your work, should impress upon you that i am a fairly decent human being, and already intended to add you to the credits.

if that bothers you that your previous work will be released as a different version in my patch, that can't be helped. that's how a free-market modding community runs. as long as you make it available, it's free to use how anyone sees fit, regardless of how me, you, or anyone feels about it.

If author doesn't wish for his work to be used in other people mods and specificaly states that then it would be natural to just respect his decision.

I can understand that perfectly fine, if for example HotA team spends crazy ammount of time doing their awesome graphics and then one takes it and puts into his mod without thinking it over, mixing graphical styles and destroying their vision by just doing ugly blend of everything he can find then it surely can upset the creators. I know they are not happy with some VCMI mods and HoL mod using their materials, since their quality is kinda below HotA standards and their work is somehow associated with these mods.

Now I"m not saying this is objectively justified position to not share, but since that is what original author wishes then I think you should respect that. Simply out of decency, of course nobody can force anybody to follow that code.

if i removed his one object from the 1.3 release, then i would, by proxy, have to remove all the other content from 1.1 and 1.2, as well, that was made by someone else and released against either their own wishes, or without their knowledge(which could be hundreds of people across the entire internet, and not just the homm3 gaming communities). which isn't going to happen. the only way i keep content private, if it was something i haven't worked on myself; or have worked on with someone that i have a work-contract of secrecy of sorts, that has been UNRELEASED as of yet.

that said, if i plan on releasing something that hasn't been released in another mod yet(of my own work strictly, and not of work that was worked on by more than myself), then i'll let those people i worked with, know. you can see evidence of that here. the work i did for that mod, was initially my own, which is why i feel comfortable releasing some alternate earlier work that isn't included in their mod; IF that mod isn't released before my 1.3 patch. i let them know, because they SHOULD know.

that is the extent of my courtesy; i keep secrets secret, secret content secret(providing it was not my own to begin with), and i give credit where credit is due. i already explained in detail in my previous post, why kurek's wishes are not to be. this post only further specifies the intricacies of that, and my stance on released/unreleased work. his work was already released, so it is fair game for anyone who wants to work with it(as is mine, and any other released work). just like the object he initially used, was someone else's work. you can't have your cake, and eat it too. at least, not with us poor people.

==================
Nearly done with the sphynx swap-out i'm doing. I only have the snow and skeletal dirt version left to do.

improved the igloo, and made a reversed version. also gathered all the 32x32 original homm3 defs, to make them 32x64 versions so their shadows will show up in-game. i'll add them to the patch as-is, so they'll replace the flawed versions when the patch is installed.

i've been honing my 3 campaign maps, and i just finished cutting out another set of terrain patches for beaches.

Thank you. Our modding community is not the biggest and we are thinly spread across the planet. There is no reason we shouldn't all be working together. If you feel someone on a lower skill level somehow cheapens your work by cleaning your sprite or changing the colors on it then you miss the whole point of modding completely. Any original content that i make and gets messed about with by someone else is just a compliment to me. Hey someone likes my snow and wanted to spend some of their own free time doing things with it! Keep the content free folks, most of our greatest inventions came from people who continued the good works of others.

i mean, seriously. the wog guys, who STARTED the whole modding homm3 thing, got all of their content second-hand, as well. the whole idea of not using each other's content is just absurd. that's what our content is SHARED for: to be USED.

once it's released to the public, people can use stuff however they see fit. that's entirely their prerogative. the only time it's NOT ok, is when said content hasn't been released to the public yet.

I agree that modding is about sharing works, use assets and such, because if we were waiting only for Hota level designers or coders then there would be no community at all. However, there is the technical aspect then the human too: if some modder is upset with his work being used without his consent, I think we should listen his wish and act accordingly, there is no real satisfaction when your work upsets other people.

Take igrik and his hota town ported to Era, that was an immense work and could have serve to create even better Era mods, yet when Hota members asked him to give up, he did so. I disagree so much with their position, yet I think he did the only thing to do.

regarding moral justification, based on the fact that this is a free modding environment, it's actually less moral to try and hoard anything for yourself; and/or attempt to give people rules of enjoying released work.

civility is one thing; i'm all for that. but attempting to control others' use of free and released content, is rude. you might as well tell someone what to do with an apple you gave them that grew on your apple tree. it's up to them how they want to consume it. they will undoubtedly have different tastes than you; that should be readily understood and accepted.

after being mostly inactive since the last post(save working on completing a map), i started up again this morning. i'm currently working on trees that will replace my oldest tropical trees(the bad graphics, anyway. i think some should be salvageable with a little work).
----------
another day, more prepwork done for the new tropical trees(i'm down to the last set in phase 1). i hope they'll end up holding up to my current best, in terms of quality.

x2. i ran a couple tests on some new treetops; i'll have to replace the trunks as well(the trunks for one of the new sets is sub-par, and will need replacing entirely, since they are too short and scale badly anyway).
---------
currently in the process of refining the brainstorming phase for the Fear faction. i may be replacing the tier 2 creatures with something else; i'm not sure yet. until then, i'm gathering ideas and content, and updating plans as i go.

i have 3 in the works, but only the Forge/Stronghold project is somewhat near completion(Fear and the eldritch lovecraft faction are still in planning stages).

although Fear is still technically in phase 1, i have been making map objects for the faction for years now. i've posted screens of some Fear work before, too(map objects, and the now-obsolete townscreen i was working on long ago); that were lost here at hc when the postimage site dumped all their old data. i'm still debating on replacing the 2nd tier creature, but after searching the internet, i wouldn't know what with, really.

the following screen won't be anything new to most since i've posted it before, and i hesitate even posting it since the faction is years away from release; but i did just update the haunted trees of knowledge. anyway, this is the most up-to-date work regarding map objects for Fear(which won't be released until the faction is, but the white ghosts are already in the 1.2 patch, since they aren't a part of Fear):

updated with latest-minute work.

it may be doable, but being in jpg format, it might suffer lack of quality; which is why i prefer to work with png files.

i got the first and second set of new tropical trees done to replace the old substandard ones i made so long ago. i'm currently gearing up to get the 3rd set ready.
-----------

the 3rd set is done. i'm now working on tweaking the trees i'm keeping from the set, so that they'll be in their optimal state. after those are done, i can replace two fruiting trees that won't be in the clusters, but need replaced regardless. then i can hone the existing fruit trees to their best, and get to work on the clusters. once the clusters are done, i'll post a screen.

I see your love of spooky skeletons and their natural avatar extends way past your avatar :V

Also...

Completely agree about your point in object modification and sharing. We are already modding an available work and releasing our assets for free, it doesn't make sense to "add restrictions" in other's use when we aren't even abiding them ourselves by changing NWC's original game.

i love all kinds of creepy things; not just skellies.

i decided to forego the fruit trees atm, and am working on the clusters. i have 3 done so far; once they're completed i'll post a screen. i'll most likely post another screen once i'm done with the fruit trees, too. i did some tests in the map editor, and i'm wondering if i should make versions with foliage underneath. a couple things look pretty good, paired with the new trees.
-------

ok, i'm tired of waiting(i've been busy, besides). only 4 clusters are done, but i'm posting a screen anyway. i'll most likely get the others done today, though.

as you can see, the bases on these are pretty bare, which is why i think it'll be a good idea to make another set(using these) with base fill.
-----
got 2 more clusters done. now all the standard clusters are done; i have the odd-shaped versions to replace next. here's what they look like on swamp:

-----------------

got 3 more cluster defs done(my modding work has been sporadic lately, in lieu of sleep). i've decided to move all the fruit trees to the grass terrain, with none in the clusters. i'm checking the net for other types of tropical trees, but i doubt i'll be able to find trees to add that'll work with this set, better than what i already have. the clusters are looking good, regardless.
--------

well, i'm done with the clusters; although i will most likely make some new trees using the existing to replace the 3 or 4 remaining trees that don't blend with the others anymore, and then tweak a few clusters to prevent too many repeating graphics.
----
done with all the new tropical trees. i grouped the similar trees together, and added 6 more. the only trees that don't match, that weren't used, were the fruit trees; and they'll be paired with the fruit trees already in the grass column(which means i'll need to move the willows elsewhere).

i still have the remaining grass trees to replace, the autumn trees to replace, the dead trees to make, and the rough terrain trees to replace.
