There are people who would say that an average crowd is a lot like cattle, prod them in the right way and they'll do whatever you want. And they are mostly right, if someone carries himself with enough authority, people assume he actually has it and do whatever he wants. The exception for this rule, is when that someone actually has authority, because every citizen everywhere knows that people with authority can't use it, they can only over-use it.
The zombies, who at first began to shuffle aside as Anatolios prodded them with his device, noticed his Watch badge and quickly came to a united opinion on the matter.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing!”
"You can't push us around like we're some kind of dead meat, even if we are dead meat!”
"Yeah! We have rights?”
"We do? What are they?”
"For starters we have the right not to be zapped with pointy things!”
"Yeah!”
The three Watchmen who couldn't quite cope with the crowd before, couldn't even get over the noise at this point.

“Help him? Of course not! Stealing from the wizards is forbidden. An apprentice can get thrown out of the Guild for that! But I guess I couldn't stop him either. He sneaked out last night and didn't return. I...” they young thief looked worried and conflicted, “I think I may know where he is. If he's still alive...”

((@Geny, I'm [hopefully] back to the RP. Can I get a sidestory for Ethan now that he's left the group? I imagined something like this: ))
I arrived at the Mended Drum as fast as I could. Just when I thought that I would sit down and have a beer or two, a weird looking man came through the tavern's door and cried for help. I immediately approached him and asked what's wrong...
The man was wearing a hood, so I couldn't see his face. Other than that he was pretty slim; a breeze would probably make him loose balance and fall over. He was breathing heavily, almost as if he was sprinting from one end of Ankh to the other side.
"Jaddis! My daughter, Jaddis was kidnapped!", he cried.
"Calm down", I said.
"W-what?! My daughter was kidnapped! My evil neighbor, Freddy must've done that!"
"I said 'calm down'! We'll- well, I'll find her, alright?"
"Huh, y-you would risk your l-life to find my daughter? I'm most grateful, young bo-"
"Wait! Hold it right there. I didn't say I'll do it for free."
"H-how dare you ask of me to give you money while Jaddis is-"
"Well, it seems that I cannot help you as of now and you'll have to find someone else to save your daughter, but it might be too late when you finally do so..."
"Why you little... Fine! You'll get your gold; just find my dear Jaddis!"
"That's the spirit! See, half of the problem's gone. Now the harder part - where's your neighbor?"
"He's out of town. Probably ran away yesterday..."
"Oh, noes! The city gates are now closed and we can't get out of Ankh-Morpork until some wizard's book is found. Hey, is there a secret way out? Maybe through sewers? Or some other way underground? It would be of great help if you told me."

"Unless you know a way to track the book, I do indeed think we've learned all we can here. Thank you very much, gentlemen." Wolfram said.
After they left, Wolfram turned to Captain Carrot.
"Unless you've any better ideas, I think we should start rounding up suspicious undead for questioning."
[OoC: Unless the mages think of a way of tracking a book, in which case I'll amend my post.]

At this time a gargoyle lands on the roof above Brian, Angua and the young thief.
“AI 'ae a essaye 'ro Catain Carro.” It said with its constantly open mouth,” 'esain a'y shushishiouss untheath. Es'esiiay untheath earin' go'esh an' o' 'roshe'ie c'ohin'. 'rin' 'en 'or queshioni sho the 'asch 'oushe.”
Angua's forehead wrinkled as she tried to translate.
"I think he said: I have a message from Captain Carrot. Detain any suspicious undead. Especially undead wearing gloves and other protective clothing. Bring them for questioning to the Watch House.” She looked at Brian, “you get the hang of it. I don't know what this is all about, but it looks like the Watch House will be swamped without us bringing this guy in as well.”

Captain Carrot looked thoughtful for a moment.
"Grabbing zombies from the street might cause an uproar in the undead community. We try very hard to maintain a multi-species Watch and of course there is no place for prejudice in front of the Law, but I can see how the undead might see it the wrong way. I've... heard of a place where the undead tend to gather for a drink. Maybe we should go there instead and ask if anyone seen anything suspicious.”

(OOC: I don't mind sending you on a side story, but there will be no secret exits, otherwise the main quest is rendered useless.)
"Through the sewers?!” The man looked at Ethan as though he just challenged a troll to a boxing match. “Are you out of your mind, boy? Why not just take a swim in the Ankh while you're at it? No, if the gates are closed I have no idea how to get out of the city.”

"Much better!" Anatolios exclaimed, in blissful ignorance of the fact that the zombified townsfolk were, if anything, more disordered than before. He turned to a nearby zombie and stared into his/her/its eyes, with an intensity that was in no way diminished by the bizarre contraption of lenses and mirrors wrapped around his head or the ink splattered down from his ear.
"Now tell me, how long have you observed your current condition of undeath?" Ana inquired, ready to take notes.

The young thief nodded nervously.
"Thanks, Downsprout, I'll tell Visit to catch an extra pigeon.” She turned back to the thief as the gargoyle spread its wings and flew away. “Now, take us to your friend.”
The thief let the duo across the city under Angua's watchful stare. Finally they reached the Brass Bridge – one of Ankh-Morpork's historic landmarks. It was the biggest and most majestic bridge in the city. Statues of the Ankh-Morpork royal hippo adorned the sides of the bridges as it stretched to the other side of the river. It might even been beautiful once, but even metal can't bathe in the fumes of the Ankh for hundreds of years without looking sick. The young thief pointed to a narrow passage that went under the bridge right next to the river bank and said:
"There, see? There is a small clearing under the bridge there. It stinks something awful, but Al said he could handle it and that it could be... useful.” As he sad the last word, he glanced at Angua cautiously as if apologizing for something.

As the uproar quietened down to the level of background noise, a zombie who was seemingly elected* as the leader of the complainers answered Anatolios' question.
"We've been over this with your chums over there,” he said, thrusting his finger towards the three Watchmen, “we all became like this last night. Now, if you're as smart as you pretend to be, why don't you tell us what are you going to do about it?”

"If I knew how to rescue my child, kid, I would've done it myself. You have the nerve to demand payment to save a little girl? Then you bloody well better earn it!”
*He was elected by the old tradition of all mobs everywhere: One Man, One Voice, i.e. the one man with the loudest voice is the leader.

Ana turned to one of his new co-workers. "I am going to need a table, a length of licorice about so" he held his arms apart the required length "a pincushion shaped like a tomato, some rubber hose, a few hundred needles, a block of waxed cheese, fifty liters of seltzer, a sharp knife, two bottles of iodine, a number of lanterns" he turned back to the zombified mass "and a volunteer!"

Captain Carrot lead Wolfram into dark parts of the city. It was one of those places that remain dark regardless of the time of day. The air itself felt shady as if to warn the unwary traveler that this is the part where he turns around and runs for his life. There, hidden between the buildings was a shabby old pub. The once gleaming sign read “Crown and Axe”, but it was now old and faded and on top of it, most likely hammered by a one handed blind-man, hung the word “Biers”.
“This is an undead pub.” Said Carrot as the two stood in front of the entrance, “that's where they go to be themselves. They really don't like outsiders, but I'm sure that's just because they're shy and deep down they just need a little affection.”

"I'll wait for you here. I'm in no condition running around town when my dear daughter is gone!”
As Ethan left the Mended Drum he noticed that the man was approaching more people telling them of his troubles. There might be competition on the way.
As Ethan made his way to his father he noticed an unusual number of zombies wandering the streets. Most of the looked confused or angry or both. Several Watchmen tried to keep the peace. The things were getting worse, however, as the morning progressed because the merchants found out they cannot leave the city and were beginning to get restless. Ethan thought he heard his father's voice in the crowd.
"This is an outrage! I have goods to deliver! The Merchants' Guild will not stand for this and you can be damn sure the Patrician will hear of this!”

The dwarf Watchman approached Anatolios and Trutha.
"I don't know you two, but you're wearing badges. I'm guessing you're new recruits. I am Corporal Cheery Littlebottom. “Said the dwarf, pronouncing the name as Sheri, “Who are you and what do you intend to do with all that stuff?”

Bilious felt his head hurt more than usual. The Gods must have started one their parties again. He clutched his head and sat down in the corner groaning. The Librarian put a leathery arm around his shoulders and gently, but firmly lead him out of the kitchen and back into the Library. Then the Librarian took out a blanket from under his table and put over Bilious who was now shivering on the floor. The ape sat down some distance away from the unfortunate deity and began eating his bananas. After some thought he removed one of the bananas from the bunch, with an un-human act of kindness placed it in front of Bilious and went to sleep.

Ethan's father stopped in mid-speech when he heard a familiar voice. He looked around until he finally saw his son.
"Son? What are you doing here? No, don't answer me, I don't have time for it right now. Those morons closed all the exits and entrances to the city! How is an honest merchant supposed to earn his pay in such conditions!”
His last remark was aimed more at the guards than Ethan.

"Wait, I know the reason behind this. Someone stole some very dangerous magical book from the library and now the city gates are closed to prevent the thief from getting out of the town. That's why I need your help."
I grabbed my father by the arm and pulled him away from the crowd.
"Listen", I said, "It seems that this book can cause some serious damage if found in the wrong hands. I need to find this book so that I can get out of Ankh and save some man's daughter who was kiddnapped by his evil neighbor... Yeah, I know, don't ask. Just tell me - do you have any kind of a device that will find lost books? Come on, there must be something that can help me!"

"Still, one of them might the person desperate enough to nick the Necrotumblycon, or whatever it's called*, so let's be carefull nontheless."
Wolfram held open the door, or what was supposed to pass for it, for Captain Carrot.
"Superior officers first."
*For no apparant reason, mages loved to give their things names that would put most tonguetwisters to shame. To no small ammount of frustration to laymen, who were forced to deal with it.
