Russia also had an OK song and good voice.
(meaning all three really were average).

Azer and Armenia are in a war so they voted each other down obviously. Can't ignore such extreme realities as de jure war.

it's not the downvoting of armenia. that speaks for itself.

It's like... the ENTIRE TOP FOUR is in their jury's bottom 7. All songs that had great odds.

oh, azerbaijan

This is more funny than it is enraging though, because Start a Fire was a complete and utter flop and the voting transparency exposes them as the frauds i had *always* known them to be.

I've slept over it and this is how i would rank this year right now:

37. Belgium - AARZEMNIEKIOWNT.

36. Russia - Those lyrics. those outfits. that slipshod staging. Russia brought a special brand of thriftshop hypocrisy last night and I ain't got time for that. The fact that these cheapskate dilettantes got 7th(!) is really offensive to me. At least they were loathed by the audience, lol.

35. Ireland - lol. "Heartbeat" wasn't a bad song, actually, but they were HORRID vocally, holy crap. I couldn't stand this. Should've finished last.

34. Denmark - stop flaunting your defects in originality, Denmark. also, that banner: gaudy or the most gaudy?

33. Azerbaijan - You know what? even if azerbaijan were the MOST boring tonight, they were pwned so badly, in multiple ways. In the score, but the transparency rules also exposed them as the frauds we all knew they were. Now get out and never come back!!!!

32. Sweden - Okay, listen. This song is still offensively generic and third is WAY too high for Sweden.... but i quite like Sanna? She's such a guffawing giraffeperson <3 Most of my dislike for Sanna stemned from the paranoia that she would win it all, but now that she hasn't, i'm left with very few reasons to hate her. ::shrug:: Undo still bores the hell out of me though, whoops!!

31. Moldova - lol.

30. Belarus - I kind of want to put Belarus' lower because of their Conchitaelousy, but again, i quite like Teo and "Cheesecake" has ~elements~ i'm fond of. It was pretty slick. Too bad they did nothing to me, whoops.

29. Malta - meh, this was *okay*. 23rd in the finale seems about right, imo.

28. F.Y.R. Macedonia - lol how awful. I quite liked some elements of Macedonia's staging, which is the sole reason why they're this high for me. The song... meh.

27. Montenegro - that staging was so [Disney's] Frozen-inspired and i quite liked that!!! I'm kind of saddened by the fact that Montenegro qualified for the final with their most boring entry to date, but eh, can't win them all! I'm glad they were in, for once.

26. San Marino - and I feel similarly about San Marino. Val channelling botichelli realness in that performance <3 but like Montenegro, i'm slightly bothered that the qualified with their most boring entry to date. Oh well, Valentina being a eurovision finalist is enough of a victory for me.

25. Romania - Such shameless desperados <3 Romania were SOOOOO expecting to win and now they've finished 12th and are superbitter about it I totally expected a finish like this, so i'm just laughing at everything. Their delusions, but also their OTT staging, the bizarre key changes and just the general scrumptitude of that entry.

24. Albania - This was pleasant.

23. Germany - I liked this as well. I have no idea how Elaiza scraped 18th place when i FOR SURE thought they would finish last based on their draw alone, but i'm happy for them!!

22. Armenia - Neither performance did that much to me, but i still liked it. It's a pity the camera angles were off in the semi and it's kind of lol that he was DRUNK in the finale and still managed a top 4 finish because Armenian diasporiae are insane in their patriotism.

21. Norway - Again, not AS good on stage as it was in the preshow vids, but what you're going to do about that? I still like Carl Espen and "Silent Storm", but at the end of the day, it wasn't suited for Eurovision.

20 Israel - The second coming of Stella Mwangi. Same Heart is a good song and Mei was a good singer, but it didn't come together when it really mattered. Mei just looked lost on that big empty stage. In retrospect, their non-qualification was to be expected, but eh, I still like them.

19. Iceland - If there's anything this contest has taught is, it's that life is, indeed, WAY too short of short-sightedness ::glares at eastern-europe's jury's::

18. Greece - Poor Freaky Fortune . I really liked them, but they were necessary fodder for all my random favos. Rise Up looked REALLY cool on stage.

17. France - Twin Twin not even giving a snow about finishing dead last <3 deities <3 Their performance was kind of flat, but eh. I still like 'em.

16. Estonia - Gifing this performance made me realize how AWFUL the camera-work was during Tanja's performance. Tanja's epic dance moves didn't translate well to the big screen and that's why she failed. A pity. I quite like this number.

15. Georgia - This just makes me laugh, sorry.

14. Portugal - Do I Love Suzy? yes. Do I like her song more than San Marino's? yes. Do i like Suzy more than Val? yes. Did i want Suzy in the finale OVER Val? No. Suzy converted all but the most passionate haters into die-hard fans during and after her performance (the sheer OUTRAGE about her non-qualification <3) and that's enough of a victory for me.

13. Lithuania - This is so bizarre I am just COMPELLED to love it. The Lyrics give me LIFE. "Saw me chatting with my girls a bar - TRUE! we're all pretty " <3 This is by far my fave Lithuanian entry of all time, and I'm annoyed it didn't qualify when dreck like "Love Is Blind" and "We Are The Winners" did.

12. Latvia - Flawless angels. Lots, lots of love for them.

11. Ukraine - Ukraine often gets lost in the shuffle for me and i have to keep reminding myself I 'm REALLY fond of them. Finishing 6th (<3), which is pretty much the god(dess) placement in Eurovision. Giant hamster wheel <3 wonderful camerawork <3 catchy tune <3 It was all really entertaining to me.

10. Finland - Finland for once NOT being mediocre and doing really well <3 So proud of them. *I* ALWAYS LOVED THEM DESPITE JOONAS' MISSPLACED PROTETS ABOUT THEIR SUPPOSED "MEDIOCRITY".

9.Hungary - Hungary is one of the better countries in Eurovision (and easily one of the best in the current era). I'm SO glad they're rewarded with a top 5 placement for it. They so earned it.

8. Italy - lol. Emma sang this song in a wrong pitch and key, but I still loved it. She was SO GOOD ON STAGE HOLY HELL. of course it bombed because lol @ rock doing well (yet another reason why finland's good placement is so SHOCKING to me) and lol @ those vocals doing well and now we'll only get San Remo winners from Italy in the future, but I don't care. I LOVE YOU EMMAZING.

7. United Kingdom - I CURSED MOLLY . I am always so awful at predicting winners pre-show, and I should have known I was actually cursing Molly by backing her and considering her the obvious winner until like... three countries into the vote. Oh well, I still love her and her song, so I don't care. Conchita satisfies me too.

6. Switzerland - SO FUN. SO SO SO FUN. Sebastiano lost his voice in the finale and that's why he dropped a few placed on my list, but I still really enjoyed Sebaltard and his bluegrass bumbling.

5. Spain - Regal. epic. Doing as well as Pastora Soler <3 I wish Ruth did better because she would totally merit it, but eh, she did better than ANYONE from the big five so that's a win in itself.

4. Poland - I ADORE this... deal with it? The criticisms of Poland being exploitative, sexist or even vulgar are valid, I guess, but I don't really care about that. I CANNOT take this seriously in any way. It's also obvious that you shouldn't. My Slowiane is a pastiche. It praises Slavic heritage in a way that is facetious and harmless imo. It just makes me laugh.

PS:

3. The Netherlands - I'M SO HAPPY THEY DID WELL ;__; So proud of them honestly, so so so so so so porud. They totally deserved this. The staging, their *faces*, their singing, their song... it just all came together so well. This could easily be #1 on my ranking as well. We'll see how fondly i'll recollect Slovenia and Austria in a year from now...

2. Slovenia - Disagree? Well, deal with it. "Round and Round" was ALWAYS my second favourite song in this contest (after... "La Mia Cittá", lolz) and I am beyond happy that it exceeded my expectations and more. The staging making it look like Tinkara is casting a healing spell on herself <3 Her extreme entheusiasm in the semi final that caused her to sing the entire song in a hilarious pitch, followed by her REALLY GOOD finale performance.  <3 NOT FINISHING LAST, making Hannah Mancini's revenge complete <3 I just love this. It's so pleasant, lowkey and fun. It's my favourite Slovenian entry of all time and would have been my fave if there hadn't been one Queen to blow me away.

1. Austria - Obviously. People who say that Conchita's win was a statement are right. People who say that she won because her performance was amazing, are also right. Eurovision has never been just about the song or the politics or the act and whatnot. It has always been about the sum of many different parts coming together in harmony. This happened last night with Austria's entry. Conchita NEVER would have won had she not been as AMAZING as she was last night. Similarly, she never would have beaten The Netherlands if she hadn't become such an Icon. Conchita deserved her win on her own merit, no doubt, but there's so much more to her victory than that. I would say she wasn't even the true winner of the night. Everyone that has ever been bullied, repressed or been discriminated against won last night. It's hard to explain the balance between what Conchita's victory represents symbollically and her own amazing performance. It's not one or the other. it's both.

Eurovision is beautiful.

Yeah, this years eurovision was a contest between a real song and an act of politics and the politics won. I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

Sure, the song wasn't terribad and the staging was really good. It's not like it was a bad entry.

But yeah, Tom Neuwirth would never have even reached the final.

I seriously cannot believe how some people (and I'm not only talking about this community) complain that they felt Austrias song was bad and it only won because of the act and then go on to praise Polands entry. Just give that a thought for a moment ...

But leaving the entire Austria/Netherlands/Poland debate for a moment, I wonder if the "big 5" should start considering if their "direct-to-finale" privilege is actually working for them. Sure, the risk will be not making the final, but I do think that would have been the more gracious fate for France, and a song like Englands might have fared better if it had had repeated exposure like the other entries had. I know you think very bad about Denmarks entry lexxan, but personally I thought it was a really catchy song after a couple of listens, and I wonder if it would have fared better if it had been in semis. But maybe that's just national bias. I was disappointed about the staging though, they had talked about a secret "trump" so I thought maybe they would through on a giant rainbow flag instead of the national flag, but instead we got that boring "love" flag which didn't really make much impact.

I can answer this!!! The banner they used wasn't the one they had initially intended to use. The original banner had BASIM'S FACE on it with the "LOVE" spelled across it. Needless to say, it was even more hideous than the one that actually ended up making an appearance yesterday eve, lol.

This is one of the best song contests I remember. The resulting very flat point pyramid show that it was many high quality entries around. The TV concert of the year! It could've ended almost any way, I would be happy.

Conchita Wurstis, despite the silly stage name, a worthy winner, no doubt about it. A great traditional ballad and a great voice, and the fire wings in the light looked really good. Sanna Nielsen is great in the same way, very competent singer, a melodic melody, a perfect entry in that way. It's good that both of them finished in the top 3! Neither of them performs the music I like the most, but I appreciate that quality won.

On the political side of things it’s likely that Austria got some extra points when some ballad liking people voted for the ballad where they could support the idea about all humans having equal value. I think that’s a good message. And, since it’s a music competition, it’s even better that it’s obvious that Austria couldn’t have won without that song, voice and staging. Politics is much less important than the song. If it was the other way around Iceland’s “No Prejudice” would have won, instead of becoming 15th, between Poland and Belarus. And if people’s excitement over men with beards rules their voting it’s surprising that France got only 2 p.

Anyway, the imho only really great entry is The Common Linnets.   I'm very happy that they got the silver! (but they should’ve won).

There has been so many experts in the ESC-bubble saying "The Netherlands.., hmm, yeah, nice, but it doesn't belong in this competition because only traditional ballads and up-tempo party music counts." I hope that we saw the beginning of a new trend where high quality rock and country artists who make their own music dare to enter the competition. Like when the Ruslana effect made every country start drumming.

Danish TV did a good job too, amazing stage, funny interviews, presentations of esc-records, and sketches (esc museum, lol). I liked the artists' flag making too, very clever.

The China thing might have been a joke reference to the fact that Chinas dominance in world economy and how we "prepare for China" is something that is discussed all the time in Denmark.

I liked the flag moves. I agree show is too long but from a practical pov. I guess they need some time to prepare stage between each song. The other show elements left me more indifferent although I liked Lise's green room interviews. I overall think Pilou seemed fail-casted.

I understand why people boo'ed at Russia from a political statement, but I think it was injust towards the actual act. I think the song was great, the staging beautiful and the singers excellent. It certainly was in my top 10, possibly even top 5. But of course, the idea that Russia comes this year with a song about spreding love and understanding was not only a joke but a downright offence, given their recently actions, so in that light, I think they were asking for it.

All this talk about the Dutch act, but even after semis and finale, the ONLY thing I remember of that song is that there were traffick lines on the stage. That for me is why the song was not a winner - it was nice but forgettable. The countrys where I'm actually able to sing part of the song here the day after are: Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Malta, UK, France, Armenia.
