there were signs of battle. A lot of charred corpses and burnt crude weapons. The corpses suggested greenskin ilk were the victims. In the distance however, the travelers saw a camp.
- What do you think?- Ranila asked Zayl.
- The sun is setting. We may ask for a spot at their camp. I see the sigil of one of Drakk noble houses on their banners. Either way it is way better to spend the night within their camp, rather than risk an attack from the greens if we stay outside.
- Good point.
The duo approached the guards of the camp. Zayl took off his hood to show his face.
- Evening there fellows. We'd like to speak to your lord.

Several Drakk guards had rushed forward, swords and lances primed.  "Speak your business", growled the lead soldier with a less than welcoming voice, "our Lord is not expecting visitors this night".

- Well, as you can see we have been traversing the desert for quite the distance here. Me and my associate were hoping to ask your kind liege if we can set up our yurt within the boundaries of your camp. Seeing as the greenskin menace is on the loose, and the threat grows daily.- Zayl said to the guards.- Even with the magical arsenal avaivable to us we wouldn't be able to fend off a horde like the charred one behind our backs. We are researchers and scholars of the Vendigr mage academy for gifted young. So if you and your kin would lead us to your lord, we will be most grateful- Zayl tried to sound as courteous as he could.

The Drakk guards looked them both up and down.  Two guards stepped out and started to examine the strangers.  Patting them down and going through personal belongings.  A younger, more distinguished looking soldier arrived.  "Welcome strangers", he began.  "Please excuse our suspicions, but we have recently had great cause to be vigilant.  Once we are satisfied you are who you claim to be, you will be most welcome to our camp".  His voice and mannerisms were unctuous and practiced.  He was obviously a diplomat.  His uniform was pristine.

The guards called their captain over.  There was something the strangers carried that had caught their attention.  And from the looks on their faces, it wasn't friendly attention.

- Careful with that piece and the journal- Zayl said to the guards who were going through his bag.- those two are worth more than all your yearly earnings combined!- He was outraged at the bluntesness of the guards. one nearly dropped the sword piece that Zayl recovered from the Fortress. meanwhile the gurads who went through Ranila's enchanted rucksack encountered far more trouble, as the bag held a pocket dimension inside. and it had a lot of things in it, from the self building yurt to spell reagents and Ranila's own master crafted claymore, a gift from her father as she stated.
Zayl sighed and facepalmed, while seening the brutish work of the drakk guards.

Eventually a burly older soldier approached.  "What the devil is going on here!?", he barked at the guards.  The diplomat was about to answer him, but the soldier gestured brusquely for silence.  "I am Captain Djaif, of the Imperial Guard," and he bowed respectfully before the strangers.  "Please come with me.  You may put up your tent within the center of camp and partake in some food and ale, we have plenty".  And he gestured with friendly sincerity for the two guests to follow him.

Leading the way through the throngs of soldiers and tents, Djaif continued to talk.  "Our Princess is unavailable this evening.  As you are aware it is very late.  But our fire is warm and the food is plentiful and delicious.  And please feel free to tell any stories of your adventures.  If I have to listen to old Qosji's Mountain Skies Battle again, I think I will throw myself in the fire".

Djaif soon led them to a prime spot.  "Get yourselves settled in and then come and join us for an ale.  Let me know if you need anything in the meantime".  And as he was about to walk away, "Ahh yes.  The Princess will see you in the morning".

And with that he walked off to the other side of the huge fire pit to join some seated and very cheerful Drakk's.

After getting the belongings gone through by not very bright grunts, Ranila placed the yurt where the captain pointed towards.
Ranila was chatting with the guardsmen over a mug of ale, while Zayl examined the map, and scribbled into his journal. A haunch of meat was near him. Zayl would occasionally take a bite or two from it.

And the map revealed two new Fortresses along the way.

The high priest smirked in satisfaction, lighting his last candle and beginning to chant with his arms raised high above him. The flames arrayed around the blood rune began to rise at the sonorous, sinister chant, and the book on the pedestal rose up, pages turning over and over in a dry, ancient shuffle. Outside, a localized murder of crows began to flock, and they spun around and around the tower of ritual, crying out warning and awaiting the promise of fresh meat...

And a black rend appeared, bathed in fire along its edge. It grew to be twice as large as the priest, and fell whispers spilled from it before a great horned head began to emerge, followed by a red, rather well muscled and toned body. The rather obvious Daemon emerged fully into the world as nude as the day it was born, and began to try standing up straight... before getting its horns caught in the ceiling. The high priest's chanting stopped as his hand slapped into his face. "Well... it didn't say that I would have the smartest of all abyssal minions..." He sighed, gesturing for the demon to do as it would before reaching over to take a drink of water for his poor throat. After all, ancient chanting over the course of an entire day would be horrible on your throat, and a single hellish servant does not an army make. He would need far, far more to take over this backwater drakk-

He felt a light tugging and a burning sensation in his chest, and looked down to see a silver blade sticking out from his scales. The demon looked with him curiously, giving them both a front row seat to the sight of blood dribbling slowly down to the tip of the blade... before dropping lightly on the floor. And then the drakk cultist's mind realized that it was, in fact, dead, and the scaled creature fell immediately onto its face. The portal and book closed with an elastic slap while Jeth wiped off his blade with a cloth, looking at the demon struggling to free itself. "Diabolical chanting does give the best cover..." The dhampire sighed, holding his blade low. "Do you think you could make him an undead minion for me?" He requested, gesturing with the rather quite sharp blade at the cultist's corpse. After running through its options, the trapped demon nodded... it had been planning to do that at some point anyway, though it had planned to kill the scaly thing itself first... not that it was going to complain. With a few gestures and a slap of the tail, the high priest began to wake up... only to see Jeth put the ancient summoning tome in a satchel on his back.

"Oy now... that's mine!" The high priest huffed, body starting to work again as necromanticy magics began to fill it and give him more of a pallid, ghoulish cast to his flesh. "You can't just walk into someone's house, their private property, I might add, stab them, and then take their things! That's just rude..."

Jeth only rolled his eyes and put his sword back in its scabbard, walking over to crouch next to the newly-undead drakk. "Well, you're say that to the professional assassin... but you do realize that the book is three weeks overdue, right? You know the library's policies."

This got an indignant snort from the cultist, who was struggling to figure out how to work his own lungs so that he could speak again. "... What are you... talking about? I payed with three orphan souls, that's good until the end of January!" The priest said, indignant and poking at the still-bleeding hole in his chest. "Did you hit my heart? Oh come now, this was my favorite robe, there's blood everywhere!"

"... I was hired to kill you, you realize." Jeth reminded the ghoul, rubbing at his pure white eyes. The demon finally managed to free himself and gave a triumphant yell before getting its horns stuck again. "Also, and I quote, the head librarian told me, 'Orphan souls are fine and dandy, but squirrel orphans are nowhere near as good or tasty as human orphans, and they do not count as infernal tender.' And I need to be more picky with the jobs I accept, wow..." The dhampire said, more to himself than anything as he rubbed at his eyes all the harder. "Maybe take a nice vacation..."

And then he was met with another objection. "Hey, do you know how hard it is to murder some squirrels? I was out there for hours hunting the little snow down to its nest! And is it so wrong for me to want a demon army to kill the princess? I mean, it's not like three weeks is too long or anything..." The ghoul whined, visibly demonstrating that he had re-learned how to pout before trying to stand up.

"Bah... you know what?" Jeth asked as he waved his hand at the dead man and began to walk off. "I was just going to kill you and move on, but the contract does not say that you have to remain dead... So I'm just going to leave. Go take your demon on a date or something, and don't even try to deny that's the real reason you went through all this trouble. I've heard that there's a tavern that caters to... that kind of relationship here. Er, gender wise. Now then, let this be a lesson to you! Stealing from the library gets you killed and laid in the same night... And wow, that really is a mixed message." Jeth grumbled, opening the window back up with his hood drawn completely over his face to protect his poor white eyes from the sun, thoroughly done with contracts like this in the future.

The demon that couldn't get un-stuck and the ghoul who couldn't stand looked at each other while he crawled out onto the balcony. After a few awkward seconds, the ghoul said, "You really do have beautiful eyes," causing the demon to blush a light blue. Jeth closed the window with a click.

-------------------------------

The tavern the Dhampire went to afterwords was not one that catered to men of the homoerotic persuasion, and instead just served breakfast and strong, strong ale. Unfortunately, being half dead and all, Jeth couldn't eactly drink himself into a blissfully mindless stupor... though this did not stop him from trying. The pay was wonderful on these jobs, but his employers and the reasons they hired him... left a lot of things to be desired. Oh, so many things that he tried to forget at the bottom of a tankard, even into the morning, ignoring the fact that the tavern drakks were giving the human looking white-clad guy a lot of weird looks...

Bria sat in a stone bench not far from the tower. She twirled her braided dark hair while staring blankly at her surroundings not even noticing that a huge elegant palace was in front of her.

The affliction of her heart can be sensed with every sigh that she breathed.  Her face was pale and her eyes were dull.  Her shoulders were heavy like a giant boulder was laid upon them.  She tried to stand but her legs felt heavy. The pirate's mind was filled with dark thick mist that no single thought could even enter it. Mixed feelings of misery, anger and hate had shrouded her.

Luck had left the bandit. Aside from having empty pockets, she also lost track of the fiend, her only lead to this enigmatic quest of hers. Apparently these were not the only reasons that sadden her. There was another, deeper than those, and she kept it silent, kept it hidden deep inside her heart.

She sighed once more before she decided to do what she just told herself earlier - I need a drink. The word 'drink’ instantly energized her dreary body, although it was not that strong, at least it helped her stood up. Heavy-handedly she walked, searching for a tavern where she hope to release the entire burden she was experiencing when a large figure bumped her.

“Watch we’re you are going human!” the figure shouted at her.

Bria slowly turned to the large figure. Her face was glowering and her eyes were sharp as she locked it into his.

“Hey, why did you do that? Do you want to die, huh?” the pirate threatened.

The large stature sighed, just shook his head and turned away from Bria while murmuring something.  He went back into his track fairly, unthreatened to Bria’s words. This made Bria more enraged. She followed him and grabbed him by his shoulder and turned him. “Don’t you turn your back on me especially when I’m not in a good mood! We are not done talking yet!” she said in loud furious voice.

“What is your problem?  Stop this nonsense human! Can’t you see you are in a Lighun territory?” the large creature answered in the same tone and it caught the attention of the people around them. They looked at Bria with curious criticizing eyes and some started whispering.

Bria noticed this and intimidated them, “What are you looking at, everybody? Don’t you know? I am Bria the Cunning! I am a pirate and I can kill all of you if I wanted too!”
This made most of the people enraged that the scene turned into disorder.

A guard near the palace gate noticed this. He motioned the other guards to follow him and they went towards the scene in a fast pace. “What is the commotion here?” he said as he forcibly made his way through the crowd.  The other guards followed and the crowd upon recognizing the guards, dispersed immediately.

“This human,” the large man said while pointing at Bria,”Is threatening me without any good reason.”

“What? You started this,” Bria appealed, “You don’t just bump into a lady and shout at her especially when she is in a bad mood!”
The guard’s left eyebrow raised after hearing the pirate. He did not need more explanation. The man’s statement seemed to be proper to his judgment.  But instead of dealing with such trivial things, the guard went into a deeper concern. Bria’s face was very unfamiliar to him and he did not even notice her enter the vicinity. The guard suspected that the pirate had trespassed.

“You, human, state your business here,” he asked.

“Well, who are you to ask me, huh?  Are you in charge here?” Bria spat as he turned to the guard. Her eyes narrowed as she carefully examined him like what she does always when she thought she would run into a fight. She also checked the other guards behind him, counting them, memorizing their positions and checking what weapons they have when something caught her eyes from the palace gates.

The pirate saw the black-skinned creature approaching. Unhesitatingly, she left the large man and the guards and ran towards the fiend.

“Hey!” she yelled while waving her hand at him.

Upon seeing this, the guards did not waste a moment. Thinking that the pirate will escape, they grabbed her by the arms and legs. Bria was caught off guard.  She tried to resist but they were too many and too strong for her. “Stay put!” the other guard said as they held her.  Her face was pressed hard to the ground that she can’t almost speak clearly.

“Let go of me!” she argued.  “Is this how people here treat a lady? No wonder why that fiend threw me off the first time we met!  Let go of me! LET GO!!!”

Khaos heard the commotion not too far away from him and he saw the girl that had been following him. He stopped for a moment to see what she's going to do, but realizing that she's just going to cause trouble, he turned his head away and headed to a tower left of the palace.
It was the archive of the Lughun race and Khaos needed to gain information on what's happened over the past ages. History, philosophy, arts and poetry were sacred to Lighuns, but everyone was free to browse through the libraries, archives and documents as long as he didn't damage them in any form. The entrance to the tower was wide oped and welcoming, yet it did not matter to Khaos at all ever since he became an emotionless shell of his former self.
Inside was sitting a caretaker who was dusting off some scrolls. He had a long, grey beard and a dark blue robe decorated with golden strings and gems.

"May I help you?", he asked Khaos.
"I am looking for history of the Lighuns for the past seven cycles."
"Oh, that's quite a lot of time... It will take me a while to gather all of the books and scrolls in one place. Say, you look a bit familiar... Have I met you before?"
"No, we have never met earlier."
"Oh, well, I've grown quite old and I've met my share of folks."
"Where are the records?"
"Err, do you want to search for them for yourself?"
"Yes."
"Not much of a talker, are you? Huh, there's a map of the tower sections over there, then. I think you'll figure your way around."

“Let go of me! Let go!”, Bria appealed, and had been saying the same words since she got caught in the palace gates while the guards dragged her inside the prison.

“He doesn’t know you,” one of the guard opposed, “He even turned away when you called him.”

“I told you,” She continued, “I’m with that black g-“. Her seem to be endless pleas stopped when another guard intentionally hit her face on the rusty steel bar. The impact was hard and it cut her left cheek. A drop of warm blood gushed out of it and the pirate felt it. Bria’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the guard memorizing his face. Her visage contorted in anger, “How dare you do that to my pretty face?!”

The guard just laughed and said, “Do you want me to repeat that?”

“Oh you stupid, mother snower! I will kill you!” Bria spat as she landed a kick to the guard’s abdomen.

“Owww!” the guard screamed in agony but still managed to pitch a joke, “She doesn’t ceases talking.”

“Stop this madness!” a deep and loud voice came from behind. It was the second in command of the guards. “Frisk her thoroughly and confiscate all of her weapons. Do not untie her hands.”

The guards followed him. They stripped her of her daggers. One of the guards found a small dagger hidden inside her boots. Bria’s irate face turned serious. She felt somewhat amazed. She knew that she hid it very well and still he has found it – her ‘heartbreaker’. She bit her lips and gulped. That small dagger had helped her with the worse situations. But now that it was gone, she would have to think of another way.

“You will be held here until the Captain decides what to do with you.” The guard stated.

“Now, go inside!” he added as she pushed the pirate inside the cell. “And shut up for snowing sake!” Then he locked the door and hooked the key on his belt.

“No! I will not shut up until you free me! I’m not a criminal! You are wrong!” Bria appealed but nobody was listening.  The guards turned away and went upstairs.

However, one of the guards remained – the one who had they key. He went into the table and grabbed a falgon of ale.

“Is that ale?” Bria asked. The guard looked at her and slightly raised his eyebrows. “Give me a barell please.”

The guard nearly choked upon hearing that as she looked at her completely confused.  “What are you? Goddess of ale?”

Bria’s eyes sparkled when she heard the word ‘goddess’. Most men tell her that always, but she did not expect this one to call her that. She had always thought that she was a goddess. It lingered inside her mind and made her felt like she was walking on air. The pirate knew her beauty and sensuality always do the trick and she assumed that it worked on the guard already. Then something came inside her mind. Without her ‘heartbreaker’, this was one of the options that she supposed could work.

“Oh, I’m a goddess that’s for sure,” Bria said in sultry voice. Then she paused and locked her eyes onto his and started thinking lustful thoughts. She started imagining somebody who drives her crazy. The guard stopped drinking his eyes caught onto hers.

Bria felt that she had enticed the guard. She then spoke again in a charming tone, “Come closer, bring me ale and I’ll show you what a goddess can do.”

“Forget it. I’ll give you food instead.” the guard said shaking his head and then he went upstairs.

“Nooo! Don’t leave me!” Bria screamed in frustration shaking the cell bar repeatedly. “This is your fault fiend! If you didn’t leave back there this wouldn’t happen!”

She turned behind her and noticed a small window.  She looked outside and saw the tower where the black-skinned creature went. “Curse you fiend!” she shouted, “Curse you demon! Curse you snow!”

A lone muezzin called out as the sun rose slowly over the mountain peaks.  Like a silent wave upon golden sands the suns rays trickled and flowed, igniting the snowy peaks that sparked and glistened as they basked in the sun once again.  The muezzin's plaintive calls echoing through the mountains and valleys.

Drakks emerging from tents or from guard duty offered their hands up to the skies as the sun struck the camp.  Silent prayers were offered and blessings given as the camp then erupted into activity.

Soon the smells of roasting meat wafted through camp.  The ogre masters splashed water on sleeping and snoring ogres and delighted and placated them with huge slabs of burnt spiced meat and a large trough of watered down ale.

Aura emerged from her stately tent and surveyed the camp.  Behind her, servants bustled and busied themselves in dismantling her chamber ready for departure.

Aura walked over to her chair and table.  The table was laden with fresh fruit, tea's, coffee's and Drakk delicacies.  As Aura sat down a servant poured her a small steaming cup of coffee from a copper cezve and placing a date next to it, set it down next to Aura.  Aura smiled a thank you and the servant smiled and bowed.

Aura had been made aware of the two new strangers who turned up in the middle of the night.  She wondered what else to expect.  What should have been a simple journey to the capital was beginning to turn into a full blown adventure.

So Aura sat and waited.

- We did. What I do is important. Well, shall we go and greet the hostess or not?
- Of course I want to. It wouldn't be very courteous of us if we didn't.
- Right.- Zayl closed the journal.
The two worked their way past the guards towards the princess, who was eating her breakfast.
- Top of the morning m'lady- Zayl said.- Can we join you in your meal?

Aura looked up and squinted as the sun shone brightly in her eyes.  She was speechless for a second and could barely make out the form in front of her, that had approached her with such boldness and disregard for her status.

Yet somehow she was feeling quite relaxed and just a little intrigued.  So she beckoned for them to take a seat at her table.  She turned to her servant in waiting, who immediately poured the guests a small cup of steaming hot coffee.

"I understand that you approached my guard last night looking for shelter", Aura began "I must say that was either incredibly brave or totally reckless.  We had only just finished dealing with some less than welcome guests".  Aura turned to her left, drawing her guests attention to the large canvas, which was then invisibly pulled aside to show the mutilated and dead body of the half ogre strung up on a makeshift x-frame.  The corpse was barely recognizable.  It appeared to have been flayed.

"As you aware, I am Lady Myrrh D'Rho Ksk y Mnesz Oudh Ilyinyasin.  I do not like being at a disadvantage.  I would very much like to know with whom I am dining with", she stated with a wry smile.

The subject of the Arcane immediately caught Aura's attention.  She had read about Vendigr as a child in her many studies.  So now she was doubly intrigued by her guests.

"I see.  This is all very interesting", she began.  And then cutting to the chase "and what are you hoping to find in these ruins?  These lands belong to my people and you and your colleague here are welcome to study its history.  But we do not tolerate treasure hunters".  She stood up before giving anyone a chance to answer her.  "You are more than welcome to travel with us.  In fact it will be preferable considering the dangers that have surfaced here recently.  I would not wish guests in my land meeting a violent demise now would I", she flashed that same wry smile.

"I will make arrangements for you to travel with my personal cortege.  I will enjoy listening to your stories about these ruins.  It will greatly ease the monotony of the journey for me".

Zayl chuckled.
- If any of them ruins are like the last we visited, no treasure hunter alive could escape them with any shinies in his pocket. because of traps, and because there are no shinies to loot. the treasure stored there has no real value in the black markets of the realm. And we're not talking about Drakk artifacts here. No... They have come way before any of us. It is intriguing to say the least. one of our tasks is indeed recover and document artifacts, but that is in the purpose of knowledge, not profit. none of your cultural heritage will be harmed in our endeavors, we guarantee it. It'll be an honor to keep you company on the commencing journey.

Aura smiled at Zayl's self confidence.  "I will send some guards to help you pack.  We will be leaving shortly.  Should you require anything to assist you, or if there is anything you need you may help yourself to our stores", and Aura indicated to the large square white tent past the tethered horses.   "Now you will have to excuse me, as I have other business to attend to".  And with a genuine smile, she made her leave.

The night had still been young when a less than honest looking man approached the white clad assassin. after some hushed conversation, the two retired to a room... and half an hour later, Jeth stood up and walked from the tavern in which he had taken shelter. His hood hung loosely around his shoulders until he hit the city limits, basking in the moonlight while he plotted the best course to take so that he would remain unnoticed and, upon reaching a decision, the dhampire drew up his hood and became a white blur as he ran.

His silent footsteps did not alert the guards until he was already vaulting over the wall, using small grooves and cracks in the mortar to slow his decent and to give his mind something to focus on. He'd chosen this path both because there were only two drakk stationed at it for the next ten minutes, making his prefered method of absconding far easier, and he didn't want to inconvenience the thirty or so guards at the gate to open the bloody heavy things. Of course, the good summaritanship that he was trying to spread here didn't exactly occur to the two guards.

Speaking of those fine outstanding gentlemen, after they got over the fact that a human-looking persons dressed in rather obvious garb had just skaled a twenty meter high wall unscathed, they remembered that they were, in fact, supposed to stop things like that, and they began to sound the alarm, take pot shots at Jeth and do other guardy things of guarding nature. A valient, if entirely futile, effort on their part. He would be sure to point them out for commendation when he returned... Those arrows and fire bombs actually got rather close to clipping him. As it stands, however, he was more than a little annoyed with them and would continue to plot the bloody and very, very suspect murders of them, their family, their pets, the family of the pets, and the people that knew anything about them or their pets. Also, he would find out how to murder sofas while he was away... Yes... They never expexted cushion homicide

But enough of that tangent, the assassin had a job to do... And it was finally something worth getting paid for (thank whatever heathen gods smiled upon him).

the campsite was busy as the servants of the drakk princess were in a hurry to load up all the supplies into carts and collapse the tents. The help that the princess sent to them to help them pack were not needed at all, as Ranila's gear was enchanted in some ways that even Zayl seemed impossible. still, it was a sign of good will. When all was ready they moved to the cortege of the princess.
