Nephretes, you are simply one of the best modding artists, no doubt.

Love your work, but If you are open for some small critism - just small thing - those are horns ? If so, they look a little bit funny to me.

Otherwise it's really good.
One thing I reckon is that you made the "concept art" tad different than the "in-game" unit. The "in-game" has something armor-like over the lion body, which one will be used ?

Thanks guys for kind words.

I am always open to reasonable criticism, that is also a good reason to show my work on forum.

@Dairy
Good eye. Render in game resolution will be always closer to final appearance, as not everything from model can look good in HD.

Anyway, even though I consider this unit as a final, it will be actually done, once town is out. Before that some things can change, like final pose or some details..like here for example:

I have reduced "bubble beard" a little, and made new horns.

the new horns are better seperated from the rest of the head and have good positioning, but the segments are a little too deep, imo(they look less like horns, and the segments make the horns blend into the head, instead of standing out from it). if you smoothed them out some, they might be better seen.

As I have mentioned earlier our project is not going to be just about new town. Here is another example for extra content planned for release

In cooperation with Kuririn, I've made this mighty HIV Megadragon as possible new neutral unit:

Ps. Yes, I can fit him on 2 hex.

cool, and very well done.

one constructive criticism, though: all of the units you are making, while awesome, seem to be rather pixellated in appearance. imo, if you blurred their features somewhat to match the existing creatures, they would blend better into the game. as you can see, the dragon you made stands out differently from the black dragon(and makes it look like it's for a different game). it's very nice work, but because of the sharpness pixel-wise, it doesn't blend as well as it could, imo.

but great work, regardless. that is one of the dragons i liked, and seeing it in a better perspective is cool. it fits better with the game, now.

Holy snow !

That is one masterpiece after another.

You truly mastered the NWC graphic style, didn't you. Love it !
Seems like you are forming another great update in shape and form of datadisc like HotA which is really awesome.

Just one question, would you mind to make comparsion with Green Dragon, the way you did with Black Dragon ?

By the way, I like the way you are working with community, informing us what's new etc.

Wish you would make a tutorial about how to create H3 styled models and stuff about it. Tip & tricks, Q&A etc.

Great homage to Heroes 4 even though I always disliked the Megadragon name.

As for the town units... How are they related to (cultural)? As for Bastion its clear all egyptian. This is a mix from all mesopotamian cultures?

@Fred79
Of course you have good eye and I agree with you, with more advanced texturing things like that may happen, however I have yet to find method to deal with it.

@Dairy
Polish modding scene is lately very active, and perhaps this is the first time when we have enough good graphic artists to give it a try and join forces in an attempt to make something larger. It is already happening in project called Alternative units.

With VCMI getting closer and closer to playable version and future 0.99 version with map editor (which I am especially excited about) I may risk statement that this is a future for Heroes 3.

Here is your comparision with Green Dragon:

We will see if I will make it most powerful unit in game, for sure 3hex attack like cerber is staying.

As for tutorials, before even thinking about it I would suggest to start with simple things. It took me about half a year before first version of town screen, and another half for creatures. Learning is sure a time consuming work.

@DariusArgent

Well, name is what it is, I shouldn't change it

@P4R4D0X0N

There are many inspirations, not only mesopotamian. I won't cover it here, people will have to find them thereselves

Oh I didn't ask you to change it (considering it is a homage), just saying that I don't like the name at all. When I saw the creature in MM7 and HOMM4 I was kinda bummed, I don't think that adding "mega" to things fits in a setting like Might and Magic (even though it IS a sci-fi setting, until Ubisoft took over)

Again great work as always. Can't wait to see more stuff from you.

Ye, your community is VERY active, just seen the Templar unit, you guys mastered the art of Homm3 style pretty well.

By the way I thought witchking left the Homm3 modding community (in meaning he stopped doing any mods).

May I have few questions though:
-What programs are you using for making models and adding texture ?
-Where do you get those textures ?
-Are you guys communicating with any of the original NWC members ?
-What are your plans with this new addon ? Bastion + Grove + Force + neutrals ? (seems like you got big plans, which I admire)

You actually kinda inspire me to start to make 3D models.

Thanks in advance, buddy.

Outstanding. Mate, you are making a great and original town. You made professional Lamassu, an unit I always wanted to see in game. Now you made (with Kuririn) Megadragon from Heroes 4, one of my favourite HoMM units of all time... Dreams come true with you, Nephretes. If I may ask, are you planning to do also frenzied gnashers or/and gargantuants?

@Dairy

What makes you think that witchking left modding community when he is leader for lately introduced Heavenly Forge?

I use Blender for everything. If I can't get job done with texturing inside software I use cgtextures to help myself.

As for communicating, dude - that game is pretty old, you know?

Our current plans are to make few mods with alternative units, neutrals, artifacts and so on. Let's call it a "base". So basically base will contain several mods with different content. It is up to group responsible for town which of them they want to be necessary to run their town. For now only Oasis and Forge will use it, as Bastion and Grove are not yet graphically on the same level. Of course this "base" will contain only high quality projects which have "neutral theme" for heroes 3, and by saying this I mean that you won't meet the last neutral from Forge (alien) or any of forge-themed artifacts in base, same thing goes for genie lamp from Oasis (so there is also a place for exlusive content) as you may not want to have any of those towns as well. I hope that my english was enough to explain this

@Haregar

As for reintroducing creatures from other games in M&M lore: of course it is always worth trying, as some of them have made appearence only in one entry from series, but there must be a reason behind it plus it must fit to H3 style.

For example as I was trying to make Pixie from Heroes 5 I've quickly understood that color palette is too saturated to do so.

So instead I've tried to inspire a little by dryad from H7, mix it with my personal taste and POOF here we have it (model is still in a design phase)

So..there are no plans for creatures you mentioned, but it will never be 100% copy anyway

Btw. This dryad is trying to make it to alternatives but it is not sure yet. Anyway I should make new topic for different projects and I won't post more not Oasis-connected things here anymore

Hi there,

As Oasis is slowly approching alfa Version, I would like to ask you some questions about Lamassu which is final unit for Oasis.

Even though I've already showed you HD render of it, it looks like those changes will never end and I won't be ever satisfied with outcome. (Let's hope that I will manage to do it after all)

So basically I would like you to compare versions I included in post and give me specific number of image you like the most.

What You have to take into account is

1) overall color scheme of units
Lamassu has to represent colors chosen for fraction and correspond with it
2) does it fit to theme behind it.
It's a golem (statue) which is casting group spells for comrades, rather tanky than focused on attack. I will mention also that this is the most important unit for future campaign.
3) Opinion about other units is also higly appreciated

Here is also a gif which is comparing current units with an Inferno:

And also a bonus ilustration with unit development during one year of getting skills in 3D. Perhaps I will make this comparison also for other units, but their history is not that long

PS. Witchking textured IIIrd version, thanks for that

i personally like the 2nd def from 1, and the 2nd def from 2. i think those go well together, imo. i'm not sure about the pure red accents, though. maybe another color, like a royal blue might work, for better contrast. just a thought.

Simply awesome

Maaan !

You make me squeeke like a little girl every time I see your posts.

At first, let me congratulate you on this awesome wonder. You, alone, managed to create a whole set of units for a town, which is admirable and by far superior to most things I've seen here, made by one person.

Some of my personal thoughts: I don't really like the 1st unit, might be the standing position, or the overall design of that unit. But on the other hand, it looks what represents, weak lvl 1 unit. (just my personal opinion tho)

I was patiently waiting to see the upgrade of the sand golem with holded breath, it looks awesome, although I was hoping to see some more "agressive" upgrade on the weapons.

The bee is outstanding, the upgrade might have a bit too much red for my taste, but heck, it looks gorgeous.

Snakeman and scorpions are uber-awesome for me.

The flying mage is similar to unit fom Homm7, looks nice.

As for the Lamassu, for me the I and II (upgrade) fits the towns overall scheme best, because of the colors and because it keeps the feeling of the original one you made and showed here from the start.
Althohg I love that devilish/evil version of it made by Witchking, the upgraded version looks cool and powerful. Only thing I don't really like are the front hoofs/legs which look kinda "weak" to support the bulky chest/body part with the head.

Those are just my personal opinions which you can freely ignore, since this is high quality, Heroes 3 level material right there.

Congrats and applaus for you and your team !

There is also another option. I can try to connect features of both 2th and 3th versions:

It is not actual model yet, but frankenstein in 2D... and it will be very difficult (as many parts are in different models) to make, but if this is a worth option I may reconsider.

@Fred
Perhaps I will try to add some colors, because for now variety of palette may be kind of poor, but blue won't be main color, so lamassu can't have it.

@Dairy
Thanks for your comment. For now I am trying to finish line up, and another time I will be improving the rest of the units.

First from I, second from II, those are the ones I prefer at the moment which would fall upon the topics you pointed out.

If it was to be alone, I would prefer 3, but it doesn't look like it fits smoothly as the others, as well as it appears too fierce and offensive, which is not what this unit is, as you described.

All in all, good work with them and good luck.
