I remember you asking about it, but I'm playing SoD, not HotA.

You've also shed some pretty important light on my research. Earthquake, Summon Boat, Water Walk, Fly, Dimension Door, and Town Portal all have byte 3 set to 10. Scuttle Boat, curiously, has it set to 0 - as do the other 5 spells you mentioned.

Scuttle Boat: 285536 0 > 10
Remove Obstacle: 2876AE 0 > 10
Quicksand: 2859FE 0 > 10
Land Mine: 285A86 0 > 10
Force Field: 285B0E 0 > 10
Fire Wall: 285B94 0 > 10

Give it a shot, see what happens.

De nada. In the meantime, here's the rest of my research:

   BYTE 2, BIT 2 (40)
   ------------------

Used on (Earth/Air/Fire) Shield, Counterstrike, Anti-Magic, Magic Mirror, and all magic resist spells. There is no apparent link between these spells separating them from the other buff/debuff spells.

   BYTE 2, BIT 4 (10)
   ------------------

Used on Death Ripple, Implosion, Haste/Slow, Bloodlust, Blind, Berserk, Hypnotize, Counterstrike, Teleport, Sacrifice, Clone, Animate Dead/Resurrection, and most creature abilities. Whatever common bond exists amongst these spells is even less apparent than the above flag.

So I have tested this BTB, but sadly it does'nt seem to do anything at all.
Perhaps it needs to be changed in another place as well?
The Fire Wall address at 285B94 did'nt have a 0, but a 81, could it have been another address perhaps?
But sadly I don't think it works, but you are welcome to test it yourself, if you want.

Fire Wall was a typo on my part; I linked tot he first byte by accident instead of the third.

Shame that the settings do nothing, though... it really sends us back to the drawing board in terms of figuring out just WTF those flags do.

How did you test them out, out of curiosity? It could be that in addition to those changes, the AI value needs to be tweaked in SPTraits.txt.

Yeah I figured it was just a typo.
I tested it facing an AI hero that had Expert in all magic schools, 10 Power and 10 Knowledge, a spell book and only the 6 spells we have discussed here. I attacked the hero waited for several rounds, but AI never cast any spells.
In sptraits all 6 spells have an AI Value of 1, but so does Sacrifice and some of the other adventure spells and I know it uses Sacrifice sometimes and I think also Visions, View Air and View Earth. (Not Disguise)

Did a 2nd test with an AI hero trapped on water, only way out was to scuttle a boat that blocked the way, but it did'nt do that.

A shame. But then again, I suppose the likelihood of the AI actually using any of those spells INTELLIGENTLY was fairly low to begin with.

Any luck with the morale change, at least?

Okay I just tested the morale hack.
Unskilled at FF gives a bonus of +255 to morale. so FF is probably not what we need to write here.
Basic-Expert Leadership is exactly as I wanted it though.

Unskilled IS zero. What you are considering the "default" value of +1 is the morale bonus for having nothing but troops from the same faction.

So, we all know that First Aid sucks, but it seems I've at least made some headway into learning how targeting opcodes work. I wonder if we can take the old function that used to randomly determine the healing and insert a mass target check for basic skill, instead.

Would be great if you could figure out how to make it mass, maybe from Basic First Aid to give the skill some value.

But zombies are the result of surgery, embalming and merging of body parts from different corpses, like abominations from Warcraft universe. So necromancy in many ways is a medical science, although resembling nazi practices during WW2. So First Aid skill can be explained as maintaining undead bodies during combat.

Then explain to me why Necro heroes can't learn First Aid. Necromancy is not the same as First Aid. Necromancy sounds more like what you were talking about.
