Genies 'create illusion' spell is pretty effective - I use it whenever my army including Genies goes up against something that won't take Icebolts (eg Ice Demons, Water Elementals, Black Dragons) or resists them too hard (Dwarves, Gold Golems) - usually to make a stack of walky-troops to toddle out into the middle of the field and engage the enemy within range of my shooters.  Against Dragons I usually clone Titans, though.  Illusions have no spellpoints (Unlike Nature's 'summoned' creatures) so certain clonings are pointless.

You can collect quite a large stack of illusionary or summoned creatures in any given battle - this is especially useful in castle sieges, where the cloned creatures may be used to draw tower fire or to go in and get into messy fights with castle occupants.

Look, it's very simple use your genies to create an illusion stack, and then use your wizard to create some more illusion from the same stack, that way u r getting extra stacks from the geneis as well as from your wizard...

Very nasty trick against magic relient heroes!!!

People are gonna hate you if you pull off this trick when multiplayer comes out, but it works great against AI-enemy heroes.  When playing the necropolis, split off a group of 7 imps before attacking the army containing a high leveled spellcasting hero and place them in 7 separate stacks of 1 imp.  Attack the army, drain away enemy spellpoints, continue to do this if you want the enemy to lose some more spellpoints.  Attack the army with your main army when the spellcasting enemy hero has no, or little spellpoints left.  If that hero has no mana potions, then you'll have one less thing to worry about during combat.  If he does have mana potions, then the hero will at least lose a turn.

The sactuary spell is good when fighting shooters..

Just cast it, then move your army right next to the enemy before attacking. This will get rid of the whole 'ranged ability' thing and set your army up for an easy kill...
this is of course assuming you're strong enough..

For any fellow Asylum players...

I know that you're in the difficult position of deciding between Efreeti and Nightmares. Nightmares have more health and damage, and cost less and cast Terror. However, Efreeti have all of those special abilities. I was in this position for a long time, but I have now found Efreet to be better.

Efreet fly, and a lot of the time can get all the way across the battlefield in one turn. Their immunity to fire will make them especially valuable when fighting other Chaos armies, efreeti, Black Dragons, Phoenixes, or Fire Elementals. I had 36 Efreeti that almost single-handedly won a battle for a Black Dragon cave for me.

Plus, later on in the game, you can turn your Hero(es) into Fireguards, get Black Dragons and Armageddon, and--well, you get the picture

Another spell...

...that I find useful is the "teleport"-spell when using it on you opponent... When you are out wandering with your hero all alone the monsters that you meet always just make one stack... This way if you keep making damage on them and when they come close you just teleport them to the end of the screen... It works even better with the spell "slow"...

As inexperienced as I really am with HOMM4, I'm glad ya'll are sharing this stuff.

Some of my battle techniques:

1: Quick sand. Simple! If your up against alot of non magical/shortrange creature's you can cause some damage with this one. Take out they're mage & whatever else while constantly making more and more quicksand.

2: I find it a habbit to click "wait wait wait" Especialy against longed range attacker's. They shoot, and THEN you move forward's.
If you move forward's before they shoot, they will get the advantage because your closer to them.. (I hope I explained it well)

3: It is a must to understand how to adjust battle formation
Say these are the slot's
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Now, 1 3 5 & 7 Will be on the front line's
and 2 4 & 6 will be in the back, or on the pillar's, while defending your town.

When your on the map screen the formation on the bottom right hand side will appear as
1_3_5_7
_2_4_6_
That's the set formation and
4: also how creatures/heroes with equal speed are picked to go first.

You'll have to play with tip's 3 & 4 to get it.
If you want me to explain this better through email let me know.

one of the best spells is 'martyr'.
This is one of the reasons why the hero combo 'druid-cleric' is one of the best.

You just summon a stack of lets say earth elementals (there are really good for this) and then you cast martyr on them protecting your griffins, angels or any other creature you would like to protect. You have a practically unlimited source of HP's this way (unless you run out of spellpoints, but this doesn't happen that often.)

always good in the beginning is to split your first level creatures into a stack of 1 creatures and one stack with the other creatures. This is very useful for death-alignment I think, since skeletons are raised through necromancy. The 1 creature stacks take the retaliation. This way you lose less creatures.

When playing with phoenixes try to use them in stacks of one, since you won't lose a single phoenix then, when one dies.

That's about everything I can think of at the moment.

A compiled reference :)

Great stuff, any more?!?
Primarily map based
1: Gofer's. The level one creature's can pick up resource, and open up new map area.
2: Watches. Level one creature's give more visual radious than mine's and dwelling's. They also show map area where no mine's are.
3: Hero with point only to flag mine's/dwelling's while your army carries on.
4: Use level one creature to decide which path to go is best.
5: The best gofer's to use are one's with high movement, and/or stealth ability.
6: Before choosing second skill, know what you want, and how to get it
7: stealth will give you a portion of experience as if you defeated an enemy.
8: See MapHAVEN!! PLEASE (HOMM4/tip's)
9: peasants and order heroes to get more gold
10: Archmage out of **?*^^$#?
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=4&TID=4488
on the battle field
1: Illusions. Wizard's and genies fill the field
2: Imp's (verrry deviate, and almost over the line to cheating) Make several (as many as needed) force's of imp's, 1 per stack. Drain your opponent's SP before you attack.
3: Sanctuary. It's a level 5 spell, however a great tactic and accounted for
4: Firegaurd's w/armegedon, black dragon's and effreet. "You get the picture"
5: Wait is useful. You actualy get first strike alot of the time's, and LNG RNGD can't get the best aim
6: Understand combat formation & who goes first w/equal speed. (Explanation on 2'nd page, my post)
7: summon/matyr is a good combination to defend your RL creatures
8: Split level one creature's into 1 stack to take the focus or retaliation
9: Split pheonixes into stack's of one. (The pheonix has to actually lose it's number before it revive's) so you dont lose a pheonix..
10: Quicksand explanation http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=4&TID=4400
11: Medusas stone gaze explanation http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=4&TID=4286
12: Dont forget teleport, and slow. Proven useful. Necromancy, quickssand, sanctuary.. Dont be scarred to use that stuff when you think the fight's impossible. TACTICAL PLAYER'S are the only winner's w/o handicap's involved

If anyone want's me to remove all the bold, inform me. :

HAY!! MAKE MORE TACTIC'S/Trik'S! I KNOW YOU HAVE SOME!

Alway's go for cash, before you spend it.
Exmpl: Build money maker day one. Go for mine's before pile's. Build treasury, and hold out building thing's you dont need right away (duh, like magic in a skill you dont have or an extra 1000 exp.) The Intrest will be good, and you will much easier afford level 4's, to 1's.

Slight disgresion advised. Some case's you dont want to act like AI.

-------
ALSO, and my final attempt to trade secret power. LoL

Hm, trick's trick's..

Okay.
1: Keep strong force a day's away from protected area. On standby.
2: when you go in on the last dude, take advantage of multi type's of castles. Go in with 2 or more strong and unsimilar forces from different closing angle's.
3: You might want to understand how to tell many, from a few w/HOMM4 terminology. Until then send in fast decoy gofer to find out exact number's, and heroes capabilities

What dose the terminology mean? several to many and all that

I guess this strategy is not new but it works very well for me:

1> always prefr to kill first a hero with tactics skill    first to eliminate the bonus he gives to his army.
sure it works aganist strong spell casters and high level heroes.

2> always make your 2nd hero a lord (no matter in which town) to benefit from his nobility town growth skill, try to gain for him some exp. too.

Another thing....

... when you play the campaign at the highest diffuculty, a good strategy is to sell of all your recources at the beginning so that you get the money thats equired to recruit armies... Maybe this is something that everybody knows and practise but I thought it was worth mension...... (Sorry about the spelling)....

Life strategy!

just another WOUNDERFULL strategy!
when you're playing with the life team then try to have alle the arrow shooters troops(balista,Monks) not Pikeman&crusaders then try to make your heroe class Paladine to becomme the highest moral in the compat and then you'll have the first turn in the combat so you'll cast *Sanctury* and then just arrange tour troops in the left bottom corner in this way:
monks-archer and then for them your angels(2xe)and your balista(2xe)and other troops as you need and then try to take in the first shoot the spellcaster of your opponentwhat do you  think!you can ride of a very big army: the monks have 12 shoots, archer 10 shoots, ballista 20 shoots(wow) and after that 42 shoots I think you want have any problemm to complete the mission with your angels and especially if you got the *gurdian angels* and *pray* spells

Two quick tips:

with the Order mage: u can create an illusion and than cast town gate - u will be back to the castle but your illusion will stay and keep fighting... !

If u r  attacking a castle try to summon imps before doing any action, the AI will usually do nothing so u can stack up a few hundreds or more of imps (or others) and than attack with a powerfull advantage !!!

About spell combo's:

Most people know the life-order combo with Marthyr and Hypnotise, but death-order with Sacrifice and Hypnotise also works quite well. If you have 1 dead stack you can kill ANY enemy stack (without magic resistance/immunity) with just these 2 spells. Hypnotise it and you will be able to completely sacrifice the enemy stack under hypnosis.

btw>> The imp trick is the same as the Wraith trick from H3.

Hey! I havenīt tested it yet, but if it works itīs wonderfull.

Of course you alread know that, but since no one posted it yet here it goes:

You can destroy illusions with dispel. Just cast dispel in an illusionary stack and you kill the entire stack. Mass dispel will destroy all ilusions in the battle.

Young old guy made a good one. I thought it would go well here.

Alright.. When attacking a castle, after defeating the ranged attacker's use the spell DiSPLACEMENT to pull the short ranged attackers twoards the wall, so hence your long rangrs can hit them.

You may never have to break doors again

Using banish against Death summoners can be very powerful somtimes, though i'm using it very rarely.

Universities and skill booster places can be sometimes very risky because it makes you expand your diffrent skill, hence you may have problems getting to a high ability in specfic skills.
