Hmm... After reading all the replies, it would seem that griffins would fit best with the Stronghold.

But two objections come to mind when trying to envisage this:

What to do with the Thunderbird/Roc? I think they're a bit too similar to have in the same town. Even more so than Griffin and Phoenix. Whom I also think too similar, now that I consider it.

And there's something not quite right about that either. I somehow associate griffins with a certain degree of regality, and if there's one thing the barbarians lack (other than magic ), it's that sense of royal splendour. I don't know, maybe I'm just babbling here.

I definitely don't want them with nature, at least as long as "nature" is defined as "dark, lush, supernatural forests teeming with creatures of western mythology".

I thought they fit perfectly with Warlock in HOMMII, but I was pretty young at the time, had never heard of Griffins before and was so enraptured with the game as a whole (it was my first HOMM. ahh...) that I probably wouldn't have reacted if the Necromancer had Angels.

So I guess I see the reason these fellows have been around the block, so to speak. They don't really have an obvious home (at least not in the HOMM universe).

Greetings
DonGio

Or maybe Nature. Because griffins dont look so mean in Heroes 4 that they looked in heroes 2.

thats the thing - the Heroes Staff People can change the minor details according to the creature's town types... i mean, none of the "evil" creatures are wearing baby blue or pink with huge smiles on their faces, but have evil grins and mencaing eyes lol... it just depends on what you think the griffins look best as, or if you want two or more different types of griffins (like me lol)

I think the griffins fit in good in the Castle.  The Castle consisted mainly of Humans.  Humans can't fly so The griffins balanced the amount of flyers in that town.  The griffins were loyal to the royal family and protected them.

So I think that it would be best to have different type of griffins like Shadow Griffins (Evil Griffins) and Light Griffins (Good Griffins).

As I said before somewhere in this thread... It's not very good idea to have same creature's different types, like it was in Homm3 (upgrades). Better have more creatures, but not the same...

Nature seems okay to me...sort of an animalistic array of creatures sans Elves and Sprites (not counting the Creature Portal). I don't particularly like them in a human/castle type of environment.

I still liked them best in castle. It was the whole 'Royal Griffin' that made them a uniquely castle unit though. I suppose if they'd been called Wild Gryphons and placed in Rampsrt we'd have accepted it as ok as well.

to me having them in the nature town was the best.
having griffins in a castle is like angels in a death town, just doesn't seem right

Griffins could fit in :
Castle and Nature only.Exactly what Asmodean said.I mean Griffins where first seen in the island of Krete in paintings it the throne room in the Knossos Palace they are said to be protectors of the throne noble, majestic, loyal and royal creatures that would defend their king at all costs(castle) and because of their appeareance eagle-lion they would fit in rampart as well

Castle.
Seeing as they appear in much of English medieval heraldry, and were a mythical symbol of royalty and nobility back then.

And coz HOMM3 is better

I also put Griffins in the castle.
They seem to be proud, noble, bird/lion things, making them perfect for the "noble, royal Castle"

Yeah, Castle (Life/Haven) got a little boring in H4, with only human creatures, and the Angels (who got so seriously ripped off when theyr didn't get Death Ward), so I'd vote to put Griffins there.

Although they ofc have never been better than they were in h4 Nature town...

But I'd also like to see them back in an old revived Warlock town for H5, but that's just wishing on my part. And besides, as some of you mentioned, they're "historically" too good for that. But hey, even Evil king dudes need protection, right?

As Castle Insignias

I voted for castle town only because of its significance as a symbol of prosperity and success on family heirlooms and ornamental tapestries. I also think this thread would see more replies if it were moved to the Altar of Wishes for Heroes5 ideas.

I think animal creatures should be found in the wild. Where ever their natural habitat is, that's where I think they should be found. Since the Gryphon is a fictional creature, it should be up to the game creators what the creature's natural environment should be like. It should be green pastures, cold tundra, dry arid dessert, steamy jungle, etc.

I think all towns should have nothing more than humanoid-like creatures as their population; people, nagas, ogres, etc. But if a specific alignment of town should want cavalry to make travel easier for any specific terrain then I think they should have to recruit native wild animals for the job. Recruiting a neutral wild animal such as a gryphon should include trapping it with nets, enticing it with food gifts, and possibly lowering its health points to make it more susceptible to treat-bribery. Once you have the animal caught and bribed, you should pay a fee in gold for having an animal trainer domesticate it for perusal. I think this should apply to gryphons, unicorns, pegasi, cerebus, gorgons, etc. I think you should have to trap the neutral monster, weaken it, then bribe it, and domesticate it before you can use it.
