Still don't see why you can't simply send a mod a HCM, surely the mod in question can ponder over whether or not something breaks the CoC much better when he/she doesn't have this thread to deal with every 2 minutes where both sides are going at it full-force.

Really, I don't blame you at all. This thread exists for this, it says so at the start, "complaints", "reporting spam", and so on. You're just taking advantage of the tools you were given.

My question is actually aimed at the mods: Does this thread help with your work?

It looks counterintuitive to me, for reasons I stated with my previous post.

The thing is: if one says something about me which I don't like, I may choose between listening or consider him being subjective then ignore. If 10 say same thing, I can choose between take a break and think about, or remain a jerk and ignore.  You, on the other side, desperately invented a third option, which exempts you of first two: report to moderator then ignore.

Oh, Sal.  I've never been one to "cry" for moderators but now I've been forced to. Perhaps you missed my public lashing a week ago?  No, you did not. You were commenting on how I deserved the stripes.

Oh, and I can post lots of quotes of you directly insulting me if you'd like. You do that fairly frequently. Perhaps you do it so much that you are no longer aware that you do it. Not to mention your routine religion bashing.

I'd rather have everything out in the open than have stealth "hit jobs." And with everything out in the open we can all see how the mods decide to interpret the COC this month.

Well Elodin, I never insulted you, your problem is that you need to look up for definitions. Yes, twice I called you hypocrite but my insult vocabulary has much harsher terms which I reserve for people I know physically, so they can punch me in return. Fair.

I suppose, with "public lashing" you mean this post of Corribus which I quote here just so everyone can rejoice in "Elodin's Public Lashing" again:

Quote:
OSMers,

The Mod Squad has carefully considered the recent complaint by Hobbit about the posting style of Elodin in OSM threads.  In fact we took several days to do this to make sure everyone had a say.  Our decision has been to issue Elodin a warning via HCM about his recent posting style.  We sincerely hope he will take it to heart, because we all feel he offers an important perspective on many topics which is invaluable to the health of this "real life issues" forum, and if he posted in a more positive, constructive manner he could be a real asset to this place.  If he doesn't take it to heart, he will continue to be a source of malcontent here and, well... next time there will probably be more than a gentle letter as consequence.

HOWEVER.

Before the rest of you gloat over this, know that the contents of the letter we wrote to him apply to everyone.  The Mods view consistently belittling language to be against the spirit of the code of conduct, and there has been far too much of it lately.  Calling other peoples' beliefs idiotic, stupid, inane, retarded, or whatever is just as much an insult in my view as calling someone a snowhead and flipping them the bird.  This kind of behavior creates a toxic atmosphere that inevitably escalates toward shouting, cursing and - most important - driving away people who may have an interest in joining the discussions here.  I have silenced or issued warnings to at least six people in the last month for clear violations of the code of conduct in the OSM alone, and this is far too many.  I want you to know that these conservative approaches to moderation will soon stop. I try my best to NOT burden people for all eternity with negative star penalties, and I can probably count on one hand the number I've given out to people who aren't multiple-account violators, but I will start to hand them out if that is what it takes to enforce order and decorum around here.

Now that that is said, I will reopen the religion thread and pray you can all resume some intelligent, enlightening discussion there.  I know it is possible, because you guys have brilliant, engaging discussion when you put your minds to it.  (Never mind that you can also drive me to the virtual precipice of insanity when the collective mood strikes...) So let's leave the pissing contests behind us and show why HoMM fans are the best fans on the internet, OK?

So. Re-reading that I object against making the OSM Feedback Thread the OSM Pissing Contest Thread - which is what has been happening since "Elodin's Public Lashing".

I could also object against trivializing the fate of people who got a real public lashing - Jesus amongst them, just to put things into perspective.

Now. I'd urge everyone here to strongly consider whether it's worth the bother to engage in a pissing contest with Brother Elodin. You are talking against a wall anyway. Mind you, I don't suggest to ignore him - I just think you may consider ending the exchange of hostilities a little earlier than usually, preferably after the second answer or something like that.

I bet that will save us all a lot of trouble.

Actually, I was referring to the multiple posts by Corribus and other folks all condemning me for a posting style supposedly more unfriendly than others. You joined in for several licks as I recall. YET you have not at all posted in the manner you said that I should post.

Yes, I'm a wall. Standing firm against the tides of evil.

Or you could, you know, just try not insulting Elodin and bashing religion every other paragraph. I'll bet that would go a long ways towards making the forum a more friendly place.

Good tactic, drive all of them crazy by doing the wall and when they get angry play the victim shamelessly.

To you, anything further than "I don't believe" is religion bashing, while religious doctrines feel free to condemn anyone as heretics, sinners, evil men, hell deserving heathens etc etc. It's the 21st century, we don't play that way anymore.

Dear OSMers,

It has become apparent over the last few months that the way "feedback" is currently handled in the OSM is not working.  Related to this, Adrius recently made an astute observation, which I shall quote in its entirety:

Quote:
In all honesty, I don't think I've seen something similar to this thread on any other forum I've visited.

A place where people continously call each other out and try and get mods to act on it, it looks like children jumping up and down trying to get their teacher's attention.

Why the need to have everything in public? Of all the boards the OSM has the most active moderation, we even have mods that take active part in the discussions themselves, they WILL read, and if it breaks the CoC they will act upon it.

If despite all of this there are still posts that remain unseen by the moderators, a simple HCM will have the exact same functionality as the report buttons that are essential on more modern forums. This will avoid firing up even more conflicts over petty issues.

I feel like 90% of the moderators' work is cleaning up "feedback".

I wholeheartedly agree with pretty much everything else in this post. A good portion of my work IS managing the feedback thread, and it's not enjoyable work. More to this point, Adrius asks:

Quote:
My question is actually aimed at the mods: Does this thread help with your work?

The answer to this is a resounding "NO".

Most forums handle complaints by members about other members by offering a "report post" function.  HC does not have this functionality. Even if it did, I'm not sure it would be really helpful.  What we do have (what we did have) is a feedback thread, which is (was) originally intended to provide a place for members to report spam, ask mods to transfer threads, make complaints and post QP suggestions.

Needless to say, the feedback thread is increasingly dominated by complaints, and not the constructive kind.

So to come full circle: It has become apparent that the way "feedback" is currently handled in the OSM is not working.

It is time for a change.

This change will come in the form of new OSM procedures which hopefully will encourage more positive and structured discussion of feedback on OSM policies and complaints about moderators and other users.  This will include a new document which outlines posting guidelines for the OSM, including thoughts about how members can best contribute to the OSM in a positive fashion, how members can voice their concerns and feedback in a constructive manner, and so forth. The finer details of these new procedures are still being worked out, but hopefully will be put into effect in the next few days.

In the meantime, the most immediate part of this change will be to permanently close the existing feedback thread.  Until new methods to provide feedback are enabled, all QP nominations, complaints and any other OSM feedback should be sent via HCM to one of the OSM mods directly.

I will leave this thread stickied until after the new OSM guidelines are posted so that everyone has a chance to see this post.
