Well, I read three of his books, and I found nothing remotely resembling literary value.

Well, you have your opinion, I have mine. I read over 20 of his books by the way (24, if I'm not mistaken)... Everything I got my hands upon. You could call me a fanatic I guess.

Ive read some books from Arthur clarke and got to say they really arent that much of literature

Are you kidding me? He was the Jules Verne of our age.

Slaughterhouse Five?
John Irving's work?
Confederacy of Dunces?
The Color Purple?
Song of Solomon?
Cormac McCarthy's books?

That's off the top of my head.  If I sat around and thought of it, there'd be tons more that have been written in the last 40 years.

And Dune = literature?  Wow.  Just wow.

John Irving's work is merely average.

I haven't read any of the others.

Obviously, I was talking approximately. But I don't think that there's been any good books (besides the Dune series) that have come out after Catch-22.

What about Ender's Game?
Fight Club?

I was about to say A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula Le Guin) but then I realized that turned 40 this year

But that's exactly the point, isn't it? Because you haven't read every single book published in the last forty or so years, you can't say that none of them deserve to be called literature with that kind of certainity.

If "Dune series" is named "literature", what is the "Harry Potter" series called then?

Well, I'll have to look into some of the books you recommended. But the next book on my reading list is "Atlas Shrugged".

It's good entertainment, but not really literature. The Dune series is, though.

Indeed it does. I agree there.
The Dune series are perhaps one of the greatest science-fiction series ever written, and contain just about as much content as, for example, Tolkien's books. And Harry Potter is simply a children's book (though a good children's book, I loved it when I was younger), which went teen mostly just for commercial purposes.
