I bet you dollars to donuts Consis, that Oprah's stumping will have a positive effect on the polls.  I predict Obama takes Iowa by 7, loses New Hampshire narrowly, and smashes Hillary in South Carolina.

Thank god by the time the primaries get to your state, Obama's candidacy will be all but assured.

Well, Obama's already leading in Iowa. But I think that Oprah would have a negative effect in the long run.

I don't think so, not in the long run; not in the short run.  She is not just an empty headed actor blabbering about politics.  She isn't telling anyone how to think.  She's more or less telling people at the rallies, "Hey.  I like this guy for these reasons.  You draw your own conclusions."

She has a fanbase of millions that pay attention to the things she likes(ever watcher her annual My Favorite Things episode).  Through her book club she has helped launch the careers of numerous authors, or at least put them on the map.  That she has stayed away from the political arena should be a testament of how strongly she feels about Obama.

Consis wants to link their mutual skin colors and say her motivation to stump for Obama is based solely off of his race.  He is half Kenyan and half white.  Is he running as a black man?  Or is he running as the strongest leader available who makes the soundest decisions out of the bunch?  Regardless, please don't be a Consis.

Given how sure I think he is going to be the noiminee, here are my top three for his choice for VP.

1.  Dick Durbin
2.  Tom TancredoTom Vilsack.  I meant Tom Vilsack
3.  Bill Richardson

It doesn't matter why she's helping him. It matters what people think her reason for helping him is. And when Oprah's surge is over, he will drop far. Obama's hope is that the primaries will end before that happens, because Oprah's support is helping him now.

And Tom Tancredo for VP?

When all is said and done it comes down to the quality or perceived quality of the individual candidate.  Obama is fine on his own.  Oprah's support is nice but not needed.  I'm not sure why you think its only going to amount to a temporary surge before the race baiters get their hands on the two.  Anyone who tries to go that route with Oprah will get squashed. Plus, this isn't 2004 where Kerry ignored the dumb attacks on him by the socalled Swiftboat (read: Rove's hit men) veterans.

Not to mention the fact that Oprah does not only have african american female fans.  In fact her biggest fan base may be white american females.  But, people do make it about race.  Instead of saying, hey lets listen to WHY she might support Obama..it's automatically "Because he's black".  Anybody who wants to make it about race, go ahead.  I'll pass.

Ok Then It's Settled

You say Obama all the way and I say it's over for him. I understand why you think he's the best man for the office of President of the United States. I respect your convictions. I respect that you only want the best for our country. I disagree but I would never question your patriotism. I believe you are a good man with an attraction to toilet humor.

You don't understand that your willingness to call me a race-baiter only displays your own frustration. I don't feel so bad about you calling me that anymore. I think I've been able to localize that dodgy term to your area of the country. People don't say that in most places around the country. It wasn't until I learned through reading Obama's book that Chicago was such a deeply racially divided city. I can only imagine what it must be like to live in a place like that. The people must have been through some of the most racially heated civil tests any city could endure. I've heard your city has had historic riots that are still impacting the minds of the voters there even today. It seems like a place where race is the focus of too many arguments. I understand that a race-baiter is your local slang way of telling me I am wrong in my convictions. I understand that's what you'd say to other people who pull out the race card as a basis for an argument. But I don't live where you live. I don't come from that part of the country. My history and culture is significantly different. Some of which I have described to Violent_Flower.

People, where I live, here in Oregon don't have these racists arguments very often. I've lived here almost 6 years and only one time has it ever come up and that one time was not about African Americans. Otherwise I only hear about it at church regarding what we believe God wants us to do with our lives, our time, and our money. Africa is the answer of course.

I believe it is the perception of people that matters more in a national political race for the presidency. I've seen all the facts. You've been correct about every fact that you've posted about your favorite candidate. I simply do not perceive those facts in the same light as yourself. I don't read the information and conclude that this man is the best choice for president. In fact I'm very close to changing my support away from Hillary.

I am glad that both Hillary and Obama are good candidates. Even though I feel Obamas views to be more similar to mine than Hillarys, I believe Clinton would be the better President. The experience - She knows how to handle the senate and White House.

I'm not saying that the only reason Oprah is helping Obama is because he's black. I'm saying that's what people will say, and he'll drop as a result.

Mvassilev,

Don't worry too much about it. I agree completely. I agree that people see it the way you are describing it. But don't take it too seriously if you get called a racist for having said that. That's what they did to me and that's what they'll do to anyone who openly opposes Obama or Oprah. If you disagree with them then you're immediately a racist and a Race-Baiting-(insert corresponding racial slur here applicable to the recipient's actual race).

I recall an episode of "Seinfeld" relating to this very subject. In this episode someone calls the character 'George' a racist. He then runs around trying to prove he's not a racist by showing he is friends with people who are of African descent. Seinfeld is constantly telling him, "You don't have any black friends! I guess you're a racist pal!" It's unbelievably funny.

In reality nothing else seems to carry weight with certain people who are experts at pulling out the race card for every argument. So perhaps in the spirit of Seinfeld, and seeing that nothing else seems to get through to The_Gootch, I should probably prove my own blackness(as it were) by providing a list of black people that I'm friends with to prove I'm not a race-baiting cracker*:

1. My father is married to a black woman.
2. I have two black brothers by their marriage.
3. One of my good friends from High School is half black and half korean(I guess that means I'm good with all koreans too)

*~(cracker is a common racial slur for white people)

I'm proud to be a race-baiting cracka.  I personally think Oprah is a racist myself and she is only supporting Obama because he is black.

I don't think that's the only reason she's supporting him. If it is, why didn't she support Al Sharpton? (Maybe it's the fact that he's an idiot).

Also, this page looks hilarious in Gizoogle. To quote myself,

It probably isn't the only reason she supports him, but it is probably a huge part of it.  She probably didn't support Sharpton because he calls racism every time anyone says anything remotely construed as racism.  AKA, he's an idiot as you put it.
She wasn't as popular back when Jackson ran would be my guess, that would be why she didn't support him.  For the record, I'm with Consis, I don't think that Obama will get the nomination.  Whether it be because of this, or other reasons.

I don't care who wins the nomination, as long as they lose the general election.
Hillary Clinton would be the worst choice out of any party.  I'm voting for McCain now.

I wouldn't write off the Republicans so fast.  If you notice, all of the candidates are distancing themselves from Bush.  After the primaries are over and we have a better view at what may actually happen we can make a better assessment of who could win.  Clinton is too polarizing.

Off to work...

Well, Wolfman, at least you're supporting McCain now, and not Romney. I'm too young to vote this time, but my mom was making a list of candidates to decide whom she was going to support and she narrowed it down to:
Biden
Dodd
Gravel
McCain
Paul
Richardson.

So McCain is quite decent. I just don't like his stance on the war and that he's pro-PATRIOT act and pro-life.
