You know all the world actually wants from the US is to play the game like any other country, sign treaties respect inernational law, consult other allied leaders before making such decisions as going to war. People in the world feel that America abuses it's military and economic leadership. If America want's to play an international role it should show that it is willing to not only be a leader but a fair and understanding partner otherwise US Army might as well stay home as no man will stand keeping his head low for long however even in the face of the mighty american soldiers. American interventions have too often been guided by american only interests, often failing to protect the very people who's motherland they occupied. This unilateralism unfortunately also holds for such questions such as environement and economy. My biggest hope is that the future American presidents will understand that Democracy is not only about expressing oneself as an individual or nation but listening to others and agreeing to what the majority (of fellow nations) decides.

Kermit. You make some good points. Except the world does not expect America to 'play by the rules'. It expects them to play by totally seperate rules just for America, that the rest of the world imposes.
In war our enemies can make up their own rules. They can rape, torture, execute, kill without consideration. America has strict rules on what they can and can not do. If even one civilian dies by accident because of something America does, the bloodhounds come out. Forget that a suicide bomber killed hundreds of innocents, this one poor innocent was killed by an American soldier!!
We are held to a double standard. Everything we do, not just in a fight.

Actually I was more refering to America's reluctance to sign major international treaties such as the Kyoto environement treaty. The refusal to recognize the International Penal Court decisions. Not to mention the Iraq invasion on behalf of UN's security council disaproval. I think America would gain much respect if it participated more in international institutions and abided to collective international decisions be it in environement, diplomacy, justice or economics.
People in the world agree to follow America when it's justified as they have proven in their solidarity with September 11 events, but those same people also want to be heard when they disagree with the US. After all, the wisest of men can be wrong, so what can one say about the US President? Listening and recognizing one's limits are the true attributes of wisdom.

With intellectual powerhouses like Lohan behind him, Obama's got to feel pretty good about his chances. And I love how people don't seem to think that running a state the size of Alaska isn't that difficult - regardless of how you feel about Palin, running ANY state is a lot of work.

I think you underestimate the effect of Celebrities can have on the public Corribus. I know out of Experrience that it can turn a whole election upside down. In this case however, I do think that Matt Damon and Lidsay Lohan aren't enough to make a difference, but if enough celebrities allign themselves with them, it could be enough to pick a few percent from McCain and give them to Obama, percentages that can porve to be decicive.

I don't think I underestimate it at all. I don't think most Americans give a rat's behind who Lohan thinks would make the better president. I just can't see that many people going, "Well I'm going to vote for McCain. What's that? Lohan is endorsing Obama?? Holy crap, why didn't you say so? Forget McCain! I'm for Obama!"
The only celeb out there that MIGHT have some clout with the masses is Oprah, and even then I think it's a stretch.

It's important to note that not all celebrities are alike. Lohan is a low-tier celebrity (in terms of influence), somebody like George Clooney is mid-tier, and Oprah is high-tier.

Ok personally I think McCain will be Bush take 3, but what do I know? Most likely McCain is going to win..which I think will be unfortunate. At least I will get to sit back and say "Told you so" when it becomes Bush take 3. Yes, if Obama gets elected and it turns out horrible, I'd be the first saying. "Oops my mistake." also

Am I the only person here who thinks Senator Obama will win easily? Hell, according to the media he already has. Look how much they focus on age and experience in this election. Senator McCain is old. Senator Biden is too but that point is overlooked. Governor Palin has little foreign policy experience, just like Senator Obama. Even worse, people are starting to believe if you don't vote for Senator Obama, you must be a racist. By that logic, not voting for Senator McCain must make you sexist.

I have my reasons to say so. Maybe it won't work in larger countries, like the USA, but it DOES work here. In the one-but-last election here, there was a mass gathering of celebrities against the Vlaams Belang party (a Right-wing Radical and Separatist party, which is incorrectly labelled as National-Socialist). The Celebrities massively supported the Socialist Mayor of Antwerp, and spread lots of Propaganda in the streets to vote for him. In the end the Mayor CRUSHED VB.
But It probably doesn't work on a large scale, like in US presidential elections
Is just read an interview with Sidney Blumenthal, the Advisior of the Clintons, in a magazine. He told the journalist that McCain's choice of Palin turned out to be a good gamble, as Obama chose Biden rather than Hillary Clinton (Blumenthal dissapproves of that choice). He said Obama should win the Election, but made some major errors, which still enable McCain to win the elections...
Now, Blumenthal seems like someone who dislikes Obama in general (The Huffington Post accused him of framing Obama commissioned by Hillary Clinton), so I'd like to know whether this (= former paragraph) is a fact, or whether this is nothing more than a mere opinion...

I think that if Obama knew that McCain was going to pick Palin, he would have picked Clinton. He was hoping that McCain would pick Romney or Pawlenty - thus Biden would have been a better choice. But McCain gambled and chose Palin, and it appears to have paid off, to a certain extent.
Both campaigns are making mistakes, though. If I were David Axelrod, I would send Hillary to attack Palin, send Biden to attack McCain, send Bill to remind everyone how good the 90s were and how the Democrats aren't necessarily tax-and-spenders, and I would have Obama focus on the positive message. If I were in charge of the McCain campaign, I would try to paint Obama as sexist, and try to maintain the status quo until October, at which point I would attack with the Reverend Wright ads nationwide.
