if u go destructive way you must have some luck getting right skills like swift mind, ingite and/or some spell boosters , with all 3 u could have some chance against academy even late game(but not too late, lol)

i'd say and i'm pretty sure many would agree if u battle after week 6 there is no way you'll win vs. academy

problem with academy is that late they'll have lvl3 minis on main units and none faction can beat them at that point

sure for lategame light or dark are better choices than destructive but dark vs aca. might not work that good + you can not be sure that you'll get right spells either for dark or light
summoning is risky vs. academy,as they can easily counter that(elemental balance or ring of banish will make it almost worthless skill)

i'd say it's pretty hard matchup

and as Kisp says dungeon is hard to play
they are often a gamble because u need some skills to be competitive lategame ,but u don't get them always

try picking smaller maps

Hired Hero
posted December 02, 2009 04:52 PM

if you want to play in the academy function here is some advices:
1-you should choose havez as your starting hero
2-try to hire the two heroes from the tavern and add their armies to havez's.
3-you should upgrade your gremlins to gremlin sabouter on the 2nd or 3rd day of the first week.
now with about 160 gremlins and other creatures(gargoyles, skeletons if the other heroe is necromancer.....)you can use these creatures as canon fodder you can control each mine easily in nearly two weeks.
4-if you attacked mines guarded by grim riders or bears or any large creature(tier3-4)you can seperate any useless creatures like gargoyles to 1-1-1 each unit have 1 gargoyle and put the grimlens in the corner and the stacks of gargoyles cornered to them and eack time stack killed replace it with other one
5-and if the gyarding creature was range or caster just place the gargoyle units and use your spells to kil them
note: take mark of the wizard

well ive a different concept for the use of the mini-arties(maybe because i'm still a newbie) - its true that they are a great boost for the academy troops, but in 2v2,3v3 and so on games i'll always prefere to create such for the dragons of my dungeon teammate (imagine what will happen with decent initiative/morale/luck bonus combined with the elemental chains and the great stats of the creature), or for the archangels/emerald dragons etc.In my opinion each other race has units(not only tier 7 ofc), that are by far better targets for the wizards prime skill, especially before major battles.I think that it's whole potential can only be reached in big games, but i still dont have enough experience to count only on my opinion, so what do u say?

When i started playing H5, Academy was the easiest faction to play with but still not sure how to counter a high lvl stronghold hero in a medium or big map.

I suck majorly with academy.  Against the Barbarian I would go in with summoning and put barriers and crystals everywhere with motw to restrict movement.  You can cast them faster than orc can break em and you have more ranged power.

Hi everybody. It took me a long long time to read this topic (although not entirely), but with patience I finally did! I am a heroes player since H2, and I was sure that no game better that H3 can be made, but I was wrong, H5 is at an entirely new level in terms of strategy (which is why people play heroes). I always played the magic fiction (Wizard in H2, Tower in H3, Order in H4 and Academy in H4) and I am eager to learn everything about Academy now, and of course I will share with my own experience.

This weekend I gathered my friends and played a multiplayer game via LAN (4 players) and a strange tendency occured, the last 4 times I played my friends, every time the Sylvian fictions gets up to the final battle with Academy. I play Academy in a defensive strategy (no town assaults, no battles if the enemy hero is at the challenging or higher threat level, always trying to defend myself in the town) while Sylvian is always agressive, no wonder it eliminates all others players. By the time Sylvian attack me in my castle I had 3 times smaller army (equivalent) something around 25 titans 40 rakshasa etc, but every time I defend myself (I disable the catapult so my walls stands and then I damage the fliers and the shooters, and of course plenty of magic) but this defense wickens me hardly and I am unable to counter attack, so the game ends here.

What strategies would you recomend me against Sylvian, because every time I try to attack I am losing a third of my army in face-to-face battles or in city assaults, while Sylvian is comfortable with this kind of fights.

And finally, I always play Galib, even in Duel Mode, but Ossir is blessed with so much luck so it become almost impossible to fight him. Can you tip me on this too?

Don't play duel mode it sucks.  Look on this forum for duel map threads.

You didn't mention what map you're playing but heroes against another player is always about speed.  And by that I mean speed in getting to higher levels and controlling more stuff on the map. (I.E. Defense won't work, you must agress more). If you only play Galib you are missing out...try Jhora for example.  These are my basic advices but I'm sure others  can give better.

Edit: Not sure how many game weeks you have but if you can make any use of mini artifacts for your creatures you might be able to get an initiative advantage or other bonuses on the Sylvan units.

When we play PvP we always play a generated map, with hidden mini map, so we try to eliminate all possible advantages from the game, except the random ones (as for example treasure chests and ore/wood mines positions). After the game starts I always try to get the ore mine in 1st day and the wood in 2nd, always aiming for wizards as soon as possible then raksashas (I know you guys says that Raksashas are useless but for my strategy they are the focal point, I always split them in 2 stacks then use their ability in 1st turn and then hasten them in 2nd turn usually with MotW) and then Titans. The Genies, Golems and Gorgules I am usually buying in week 4 or even 5, as for me they make no difference, except city defending. My army usualy looks like this:
Gremlins -- Raksahsa -- Titans -- Raksasha -- Wizzards
The exclusion of Golems, Gargoles and Genies also gives me an economical advantage, so I can spend more money on the monsters I rely upon.
It may sound odd but this strategy work everywhere except fighting face to face with a decent Non-artificial intellect and except city assaults.
As for Galib, I will never chose another Hero as he proved to me that his spell twisting alongside double magic protection from luck and defense give me up to 50% chance of redirecting the spell back to the enemy.

Know I understood that my biggest mistake were of not buying arties from art-merchant and not spending resources on mini-arties. But what else would you suggest to improve my strategy, because I am eager to upgrade it in every area possible, as me and my mates usually play twice a month via Lan.

Well arties and mini-arties usually come later in the game. Remember that magic using heroes don't need much of an army.  They can take things that might heroes can't and with less creatures.  The magic heroes that regain mana quicker, cast quicker, or such have a slight advantage (especially at higher levels) then the others.  Just something to think about.  Mass spells conquer magic mirror also.

I play quite differently, this should explain my reasoning. Rakshasas are hardly useless but building them that early only hinders your expansion - most of the time anyway. As for splitting them and using dash vs sylvan it sounds a little suicidal. If sylvan has tactics, aura of swiftness and luck their remains after the initial charge won't make much of a difference after dash. If you want to split something I'd suggest archmages since they are casters. Djinns and gargoyles are also of paramount importance, the latter in fast creeping, the former in the final battle. The elemental upgrade greatly boosts destructive creeping, obsidians great vs casters but against sylvan you'll want as many as possible. Djinns are vulnerable but you need them alive as long as possible to keep reducing sylvan's luck. Or to block a good charging unit of course.

I don't see how you can have economic issues, gremlins, gargoyles and colossi are all you need early on. Or maybe archmages from week 3. Galib is not very good against sylvan, I think that imbued rain arrow doesn't trigger magic mirror. The enemy needs to cast the spell for it to work. Oh yes and you may want stormwind, essential in lategame.

So you develop hero same way every time?  It is fun to play with Galib but you are missing things like Nur's (cheap creeping) mana regen or even just having a hero without luck skill but maybe something more beneficial.

My game usually takes more than 2 months, so yeas I play long games, except the ones I am busted in week 3 by Fortress or Barbarians.

I should take a look at the Elvin's post on celestialheaven, am sure that there's a lot I missed. Though I play H5 since it's release, I never tried to find out more about in web, so it's my first time, and I got lucky to get here on heroescomunity first.

I like rakshasas the most, their speed, damage and no retailation ability make them sacred in my eyes, so I will stick with them further, but today I started to adapt my strategy, I added the gorgules and the golems right behind my mages, but omited the genies cause I had no money to get them, maybe, if I will last 2 more weeks I will trade most resources for gold so I can afford genies.

Now my army looks like this:
mage gorgules rakshas titan rakshas golem mage

No room for genies, but I am still improving. I swap golems/gorgules/gremlins depending on whom I am fighting. Usualy golems stays home most of the time.

But the only way to fight Sylvian is defending myself in the town, my opponent friend is very clever (I had a replay in September but lost it last month when reinstalled my OS, so I promise to share the next reply, we should play by the end of this month again) so he always develop Ossir with only one purpose - to fight Galib, he usually sticks with things that boost his luck and reduce mine, and of course initiative arties and magic defenses. There's no chanse for me to meet him in plain fight, untill he makes some mistakes yearly on, as for example fighting Dragon Utopia in week 4.

Elvin you are right about rain of arrows, this one alongside Divine Vengeance made me feel bad, my only hope was Resurrect Dead, and it worked pretty well, then Conjure Phoenix and Phantom Forces, BUT, in that fight that lasted 45 minutes (my opponent like to take his thinking time) Galib deflected about half of his magic attacks, redirecting them back, which was damn useful for me, and crucial.

The problem is that if I fight him on the field (no walls to stop his melee creatures) I am busted very fast, his Unicorns starts my doom (with blindness occurring almost every time) then dragons halves my army with treants finishing the fight (no comment about his archery ability to destroy my mages), but the worst thing is his initiative, his army moves entirely before mine! Galib is the only one who moves faster. My only advantage is my luck (which triggers with a damn good consistency) and my mana points so I can cast a lot, which seems to annoy my friend.
