The logic says that the final number of towns will be 9.
6 regular towns+Fortress+Orcs town+Naga town.

But, look at this map of Ashan:
http://enoriel.free.fr/divers/heroes5/ashan.jpg

If you look well, you can see few more strange towns.
Some of them are wrote like capitols...

9 towns? I only count 8, What you see on map is, starting from right: Unknown town, Elven city, Ygg Chall, Silver cities, griffin empire, Tor Myrdal, Heresh, Stonehelm

The 9th city is: Demon? but where are they? ? ?

Actually, in the Map you only see 7 towns, because only those with names under them are real towns. These 7 towns are:

1. Talonguard - Haven
2. Al Safir - Academy
3. ...ris Thalla - Sylvan
4. Tor Myrdal - Fortress
5. Nar-Ankar - probably Necropolis, albeit architecture looks strange, and Necropolis is cited to have neither kingdom nor capitol.
6. Stonehelm - Unknown
7. Kartaal - Unknown

We don't see any Dungeon capital (8), because the Dark Elves live underground (below the kingdom of Ygg Chall), and we don't see any Demon capital (9), because they are not from this world.

That adds up to either 9 or 10 factions, depending on whether one believes Nar-Ankar to represent the Necropolis or an as yet unknown faction. The small structures without names are, as far as I know, not cities. What they are is as yet unresolved.

Notice that Nar-Ankar and the land of Heresh is a great wasteland. The town looks very evil. It might be necropolis - or it might be Orcen.

Stonehelm lies above the planes of Ranaar. These plains are cited to house the Barbarian tribes. This makes a possible relation to, again, Orcs, but the town architecture looks decidedly none-orcen. Tall white walls with flying banners signifies probably something good-aligned.

Karthal is placed on some sort of watery planes. The Naga are mentioned as one of the primary races and are associated with the Dragon of Water.

I like the idea of Naga and Orcs. Orcs would bring back the brute force that is the Barbarian faction. Nagas would probably be a caster race, but that's speculation.

So, just look the story in Dark Massiah:

Thousand years ago, a wizard called Sar-Elam, also known as the Seventh Dragon, locked up the Demons in a magical dungeon. The only way to open this dungeon is Skull of Shadows, which is in a hidden place, waiting until his power is needed again. Seventy-six after Sar-Elam, a disciple, named Sar-Shazzar, prophecized that one day, a child would be born, known later as the Dark Messiah. The prophecy sounds like this:

Ten centuries shall the fortress stand
Walls of spirit wrapped in walls of fire
And horned lords shall bowl their head
To one not yet born, of the darkest sire

One century of blood and strife
The moon shall darken, and none know why
The resting place at last is found
Of the Seventh, who soared so high

Last daughter of a forlorn line
Shall guide him into history
Beneath the crypts prophecies clash
The war of ancient enemies

The protagonist of Dark Messiah is a young man named Sareth, who is under the tutelage of the Wizard Phenrig. After years of studying the arts of magic and physical training in the arts of war, he is finally taken on an expedition to retrieve a rare artifact known as the Shantiri Crystal. After finding the Crystal and disposing of the would be rival expedition. He is tasked to bring the crystal to an associate of Phenrig's, Menelag. To guide him on his way, Phenrig summons Sareth a companion, named Xana. She is able to reside in his mind and give him occasional help.

After two weeks of riding on horse back, Sareth arrives at the gates of Stonehelm, a free-city state under the rule of Master Phenrig's associate, The Grand Wizard Lord Menelag. As he nears the main gate, the villagers and town guards seem to be in a semi-state of panic and fear as rumors of an army of necromancers are coming and no sooner is Sareth accepted to go in by the guards, when a flaming catapult shot smashes into the nearby watch tower. The resulting chaos spooks Sareth's horse, causing him to be thrown off and land hard on the ground. As the injured Sareth is dragged into the city, he sees a glimpse of the horde of ghouls and mercenaries led by Necromancers butchering the town's fleeing inhabitants. Once on his feet, he makes his way to the battlements and takes control of an unmanned ballista. He helps the town guard in slaying an undead cyclops, thereby effectively halting the siege. After the suspense dies down, Sareth wanders around the town until he eventually arrives at Menelag's Manor. There he meets Menelag's niece and pupil, Leanna.

From there, Sareth is introduced formally and is given a banquet in his honor. In the following night, a sleepy Sareth is awoken by a frightened servant, who informs him that the manor is under attack. From there, he tries to rescue Lord Menelag and his niece, but is frozen by a Necromancer's spell and watches helplessly as Menelag is murdered before his nieces eyes. After the spell wears off, Sareth has no time to comfort Leanna as the ghoul who had killed Menelag has stolen the Shantiri Crystal.

Sareth chases the ghoul from rooftop to rooftop, but it evades him, entering a warehouse and descending to its master, Arantir. Sareth gets his way inside the warehouse, and, following underground tunnels, makes his way to where Arantir is using the Shantiri Crystal to open a portal to the necromancer hive, and steals back the crystal. As he makes his escape, he falls unconscious and has a dream of his meeting with Phenrig, but subtly different - so as Phenrig is made out to be "holding Sareths leash", and Xana is first seen in her demon form. After waking up, he find Leanna, who tells him that Necromancers have commandeered the ship to the Island. Sareth gets on board the ship, retakes it, and he and Leanna set off to the Island. Sareth has another dream, where Leanna is dancing with Arantir. Arantir offers her to Sareth, who begins to dance with Leanna. She falls back suddenly, a dagger in her stomach. Sareth raises his hands to his face uncomprehendingly, and as Leanna falls, Arantir is seen standing behind her. "Ah, your first victim. Don't worry, it won't be your last."

On the Island, Sareth and Leanna evade the Orcs and enter the temple, where Sareth is forced to kill a Pao Kai. After this, he makes his way to the top of the Temple to place the Shantiri crystal in a pedestal, and bring power to the temple. He is then accosted by the Orc's Shaman, Aratrok, who challenges Sareth. After killing him, Sareth is given safe passage out, and makes his way back to Leanna. She opens the gate to the Skull of Shadows, but is apparently killed by Arantir before she can follow Sareth. Sareth makes his way into the crypt, gathering crystals to open the door to the Skull. Sareth takes the Skull, and has a dream where Phenrig and Leanna are seen dead, and Sareth's father - The Demon Sovereign - tells him to break the skull and free him. Sareth wakes up, coughing, but Arantir arrives, takes the skull, and throws Sareth onto a spike, which is seen sticking out of Sareth's stomach.

Sareth wakes up among a pile of festering corpses, more closely bonded to Xana, and alive - thanks to the power of the Skull. Sareth fights his way through Orcs, and off the island, where he returns to Stonehelm.

Once there, he takes the portal to the Necromancer Hive, where he hopes to find Arantir. As he makes his way through, Sareth witnesses Leanna - still alive - being thrown into a spider pit, in which there is a giant spider residing. The player may at this point choose to save Leanna by killing the giant spider, or ignore her. If the player chooses to save her, Leanna will stress that Sareth must visist a sanctuary once he has returned to Stonehelm, in order to be cleansed of his demonic nature. She will also help him battle the remaining enemies, should the player ask her to. Regardless of the player's choice, Sareth then discovers Arantir's plans to sacrifice the entire population of Stonehelm for his ritual, along with a means of returning from the necromancer's lair, and back into the City of Stonehelm.

Sareth then battles his way through a burning and besieged Stonehelm, alongside the remaining human resistance. If the player chose to save Leanna in the former chapter, he is now offered a chance to visit a sanctuary in order to purge Xana from his body and soul, and cleansing himself of his demon heritage. The sanctuary's doors will be shut if the player chose to leave Leanna behind. In an antechamber to the Necropolis, Sareth is eventually reunited with Leanna. If the player left her behind, she appears as a reanimated corpse, a Lich, which Sareth then kills. If the player saved her, but did not visit the sanctuary, Leanna expresses her grief and resentment with the fact that Sareth did not renounce his demonic nature, and attacks him, eventually leading to her death. If the player saved Leanna and visited the sanctuary, she joins Sareth in the final chapter. Sareth then makes his way through the necropolis, battling several conscripted Lich Kings on his way, eventually catching up with Arantir as he is about to perform the ritual. Sareth kills Arantir, and takes up the Skull of Shadows. At this point the player may choose to either use the Skull for Sareth's own purposes, and lock his father away for ever, or destroy the Skull of Shadows and free his father. Each option offers a different cut-scene. The cutscene will also vary depending on whether it is Leanna or Xana that accompanies Sareth at the end of the game, giving the game a total of four different endings.

You know what Kha-beleth say to the evil Isabel (in HoMM5 ), his son is alive, and after 20 years he will go to the humans towns and nothing will stop him...

So, to cut out the important bit: Stonehelm, a free-city state. I wonder what that will offer us in terms of future Heroes 5 expansions - or is this related to the Renegades (anyone who played HoF campaigns who can answer this?).

I don't think that Renegade and stonehelm are related, if thats what your asking? Because Renegade are "evil" humans who has been offered the demon powers... So the free city is probraly a town of free humans who live with out of the Griffen empires reach

I doubt that we would see yet another human town in Heroes V.  Here is how I think the Expanssions will lay out:

Expansion 2: Orcs/Nagas
Expansion 3: Orcs/Nagas depending on what was chosen previously.
Expansion 4: A faction that is either totaly new (faceless / some sort of tribe of a new race / a refugee faction of the Wizard's experiments)
Epansion 5: Free Cities.

I doubt we will have 5 expansions.  I would think the next game would be inserted between 3 and 4 if we are lucky.

Also, a pondering:  Click on the Link Here.

This takes you to a map of Ashan, very large make sure it is as big as it gets.  Scroll west and a bit south, and find the Very Large RANNAR text. Head due west from there, and find the mountain at the head of the river.  Scroll north.  There are some rather interesting stone structures near the forrest.

Also, South of Ashan is another continent, or atleast a part of the orriginal one seperated by the Savage Sea and the Jade ocean. What's going on over there, do you think?

Wow, amazing quality there. Let's you see details not distinguishable on my old copy. Thanx!

Notice the ship with the Japanese-looking Building on the deck! Is this a conincidence, when we have seen a Japanese-looking artwork for a Naga temple?

And dude, I think you've mistaken west and east ... But I see the stones. I'm not too sure the signify anything, but wouldn't rule it out. I'm much more curious about a) the tents on the eastern border of Ranaar, b) the unnambed purple structure with the Dragon on top west of Griffin Empire capitol, c) the bluish crystal-like structure with an angel(?) on the front, d) the crumpled Aztec-looking pyramid east of Stonehelm, and e) the other group of (nomadic?) tents, these located southwest of the Silver Cities. What do they signify?

EDIT > Btw. Stonehelm bears the same standards as Talonguard!

Well I am pretty sure that the purple building with the Dragon on top signifies Dungeon, or at least Tuidhanas former land (situated between Irollan and Griffin Empire)

Also Nar-Ankar has Spider Goddes on top and skulls on the building; Necromancers for sure. Besides no other race is known to populate Heresh.

Somehow the bluish crystal place makes me think about Nicolai's tomb "in the heart of Griffin Empire" but that is just a guess. The tomb looks nothing like that (but neither does Grimheim resemble much the Dwarwen Fortress)

The tents are interesting. I think the ones in the desert are for Desert-orcs, who have been mentioned. The ones in Ranaar are interesting as well. Karthal is a very likely capital for a watery race, hmm, which ever that is *cough* Naga *cough*

I'm gonna say some sort of Orc/barbarian dwelling

That is probobally supposed to be the dungeon.  I think this map was made before all graphic decisions were made.

The one in the HGE?  I think that's the summer palace place.

d) the crumpled Aztec-looking pyramid east of Stonehelm,

There is stuff in the history about "A war between Angels and the Faceless, which destroyed many elder races and stuff"

Those, I think, are probobally orcs that fled fromt the Silver Cities.

If Talonguard is in fact from Dark Messias, some of the unnamed building might also refer to buildings of importance in that game. There are several refferences to places in the text Vokial posted, that might be some of those marked.

Daystar > About the map: I only had a digital photo of the map with MUCH less dettail than what can be seen here. I couldn't even read the name of the Sylvan Capital completely.

I think it's a good point, that some of the town graphics probably got changed along the way. That might make sense for the Necropolis and Dungeon(? - I'm still not convinced about that one!) layout, and also the Fortress.

Ok I have some interesting details:

1. Stonehelm:

Stonehelm will be just a sity (well maybe key sity in the game), look here:

This is Stonehelm, now look here:

This is Tolonguard

The flags (blue and Gold) in the sities are the same, so Stonehelm is sity in the Griffin Empire.

We know that blue and gold are the associated colors of the Griffin Empire, we have:

- orange and gold for Academy
- black and purple for Dungeon
- red and steel gray for Fotress
- black and red for Inferno
- black and green for Necropolis
- green and brown for Sylvan

so, we know the colors for the races, and there sities are in the corresponding colors, now look here:

this is Karthal, look the flags:

red and gold, it isn,t Academy, it isn't Dungeon, and Fotress???? Karthal will be Capital city of new race, but the sity Karthal is in the west, and the orgs are in the east, so the race will be new.

Now let speak about the tents. Look this hero's bio:

Faiz is notorious in the Silver Cities for his gruesome countenance, which he usually covers with a scarf. His scars are the result of an encounter with Desert Orcs, and from that day the once light-hearted Mage turned himself to thoughts of devastation and ruin. Mastering these arts, Faiz has gained the ability to inflict intensive arcane destruction upon his enemies.

Hmmm the wizards live in the desert, but the orcs too in the last scene in HoF campaing Tieru said to Raelag: "Go to the east and meat the orcs"., so I think in HoMM5 we will see two org styles :

- Desert Orcs
- East Orgs

Now look the Gremlins:

Creatures born as result of magical experiments on captured goblins, Gremlins are more clever and tractable than their progenitors. The most common creature in the Wizards' army, they prefer to fight from a distance using primitive projectile weapons fuelled by explosive spells. Their clumsy hand-held mortars are sturdy, and during melee Gremlins use them as metal clubs.

Hmm, so the orgs have many relations with Academy.

Look the temple in the east:

It look like the temple in the Dark Messiah, the org temple, where you must go to get the Skull of Shadows.

I'm pretty sure it is suppose to be the Dungeon.  1) It's in Ygg Chall.  2) If you look at the details of building you can see it has columns and female statues lining the the structure fitting the Dark Elves architecture.  3) This is the weakest point of the three, but the color of the drawing is purple.  Which is the color for the Dark Elves.  The hero aura is purple.  The hero trail is purple when they have a large army.

The building in Heresh is deffinately the Necromancers.  1) Spider goddess is displayed.  2) Skulls lining the building.  3) Look at the terrain.  It's the same type of terrain you see in Undead portraits.

Don't limit your speculation to just what is shown on the map.  The main land mass contiues to the east with no end on the map.  There is also apparently another land mass/continent to the south that goes off the edge of the map.

Very interesting VokialBG.

That just confirms that this map probably contains buildings of relevance for both H5 and DM - as with the Pyramid and Talonguard.

Also, I second your oppinion about the Dessert Orcs and Plains (eastern) Orcs - we see the tents raised over those huge bones (?) southwest of Silver Cities as well as on the Ranaar borded - which exactly fits the above. That might also indicate that we will not see the Orcs as a proper faction!? [Remember the myth of creation: 'Sylath is worshipped by the barbarian tribes on the eastern plains that still haven't formed a nation.']

I want to show you many things guys, but i just can't post everything at once

So Let go back to the Gremlins:

Creatures born as result of magical experiments on captured goblins

Look the pics:

Gremlin in HoMM5       Goblin in DM

Hmmm the skin colour, the ears, the earrings, they are the same, just no comment.

Look Karthal again:

Vaults, water (maybe rivers) and tower near the river, bridges hmmm it's look very familiar:

Maybe Karthal is Elemental town? We know that Karthal is not org town, but Karthal can't be Naga town too, look here:

This is the naga tample, it is in chinese style, and Karthal is not. What is the new race? I dont know, but the name Karthal is very familiar... Karthal, is mythical sity from the mythology, but I can't remember

In DM is something interesting, about Heresh, in one dialog (2 necromanser speaking) you can hear one interesting story, about Heresh (ofcorce you can kill them and than you can't hear anything )

So this is basicly the story:

Heresh is brother of Asha, but he practise dark and death magic, Asha curse hers brother Heresh and exile them. Heresh go to the vale,(the vale, where is Nar Ankar ), now the vale is named Heresh.

the pics of Nar Ankar, on the map is very familiar, too the sity look like the necro sity in DM.

End, look this map you can see better some lands and names...
