That is ... interesting.

Actually, I think it's a very bold move they've taken, because it's essentially a complete overhaul of Necromancy, where they could've taken a less ambitious approach. But I think this deffinitely sounds promising!

They changed a whole lot

Now Mark of the Necromancer is not available only to the Dark-Magic oriented Necromancers

Well. Necro has changed dramatically. The changes might make Necropolis the most interesting faction to play - EVER, in any heroes game.

Necromancy is 20%, 30%, 40% for basic, advanced and expert skill, respectively.
You'll get a certain amount of Dark Energy each week, depending on hero level, buildings and so on. Don't expect masses. I started a game and started with 201 points of DE. The Pillar of Bones will add 150 points to this. You'll get more the better your hero gets. *catches his breath*
Err, different creatures to raise cost a different amount of Dark Energy, for example (figures I actually had):

18 Skeletons: 39 points (
9 Skeleton Warriors: 30 points
18 Skeleton Warriors: 60 points
Umm, 7 SPECTRES: 87 points
Umm, 3 Liches: 150 points

Raise Archers as an ability is gone. Instead Mark of the Necromancer is Necro ability now.
This is what I found about what is raising what:
Level 1 and 2 creatures will raise Skeletons (no matter whether upgraded or not: Familiars raise Skellys). Shooter units will raise skeleton ARCHERS (Gremlins and MGs, Archers and Marksmen).
Blackbear Riders (upgraded Level 3) allowed me to raise SPECTRES. I could have raised 11 Spectres out of 24 beaten BBRs (with advanced Necromancy, I think), could raise only 7, though, due to lack of DE).
I attacked a stack of Druids (with 120 Skelly Archers, 2 dozen Zombies, 9 Ghosts and 7 Spectres). I killed those 25 Druids without any loss at all and could have raised 8 LICHES out of it (I had only points for 3, though), which seems to hint at getting Liches out of spell-casting creatures (and probably Arch-Liches out of the upgraded ones).

That's all I know at this point. I don't know whether Necromancy skill is necessary or not to raise higher level creatures. I don't know whether Dragons will raise Dragons (which I'd guess). I've no idea whether you can raise Vamps and Wraiths as well (maybe not).

But it looks as though things have become a whole new ball game for Necro (and don't let me even start about how great this plays).

What happens if you don't have slots for those creatures? Say, you have skeleton archers and no slots for normal skeletons.. what will happen?

I sort of had a Dejá Vue when I read this, so I started to dig into the vaults. Just for the fun, I would like to quote a no-longer (I think) active member called Covert-One who made this almost prophetical post back in June(!):

Quote:
Alcibiades, I was thinking about different approach to necromancy skill. Why not all living (non magical, non mechanical) creatures have their dead counterpart?

For instance when beating mages why not resurrect their undead counterpart - liches?
Or when beating dragons - bone/spectral dragons?

Human units, like conscripts or archers can be animated as sceletons/sceletons archers, and squires to zombies. Magical one, like sprites to spectres and so on.
Of course there will be creatures, which cannot be animated (like it is now the golems or gargoyles) For instance treants, hydras, golems, giants and griffins (and their upgraded versions) does not have undead counterpart.

I think this will balance the things more with having different units raised as undead instead of just one.
Also the raised units could be unupgraded or upgraded depending on the units in the necromancer's army (to avoid lost units due to lack of space).

Interesting.

You can see the whole discussion on second page of this topic in case you care.

I am so exited I can't wait for it!!!

All in all this is pretty much what I one could ask for. When facing Necro, you are supposed to meet an overall bigger army, not an army of Skeletons. Hmm, I wonder if this affects how the Heroes work... I think I am playing my first game with Lucrentia

yeah.. storing dark energy to raise 10 liches at once seems quite a nasty idea

Who said we need those skeleton archers anyway?

Throw in some guesses...

If there is a possibility to raise high tier creatures, Dragons would most likely bring Bone Dragons. Angels and Devils might bring Wraiths.

Priests would become Vampires

Somehow I get the feeling that if bone dragons are to be raised too, it won't be from just dragons but any tier 7 unit. As a guess it's not just the tier of unit you kill but also the lvl of necromancy you have, in which case bone dragons could be reserved for ultimate necromancy. We'll see in time.

So...  Will there be an option to NOT raise anything, to store your "dark energy"?  Also, something that was not too clear to me.  If there are a mixture of creatures, (as when you combat another hero) what do you raise?  Can you choose how you spend your dark energy?

Any idea what Mark of the Necromancer was replaced with under Dark Magic?

1. Yes, that would be the only sensible way to make it work. You choose what you want to raise. Of course, I don't know yet.

2. Good question.
