Runes: Strategies and Tactics

This thread I have dedicated to the discussion of runes:

How do you use them in battle to achevie a good outcome? Which runes do you assign to different creatures? Do you go for greater rune or refresh rune? Do you use the charge rune in the beginning of combat, and in case against who?


As a start I'll say some words about my own strategies/uses.

To start off the combat field, I have found the use of Mentoring with Inga a nice combination. First get your primary hero to recieve Mentor (requires Enlightenmentx3, Arcane Intuition, Tap runes and Fine Rune). Then try to get hold of Inga - a dwarven heroine who starts with scholar and has the excellent ability of (sometimes) getting a new rune spontanously at each level up. You can of course skip Mentor and go straight for her as well.

The point is, that with her you may even skip building the rune guild (if hard pressed for resources). She level up, gets new runes and teach them to you other heroes.

In Battle:
Rune of Charge is just great! For one wood, you get double speed for one round. Your Blackbear riders will often go early in battle with their iniative. The paw strike depends on how far you have travelled, so when you ride across the whole battlefield you may be pretty sure it hits in - and the enemy loses his iniative AND gets no retaliation (after being pushed back). Great against shooters! Same applies to the other troops - after the bears have acted.

Rune of elemental immunity (1 mercury) can be great for destructive strategies. The stack becomes immune to two random elements. You can send them into battle and then cast area destructive spells over them and the enemy. Should you be so lucky to get all of your troops immune to fire, it is Armageddon time (remember, the lavas/magmas are alreasy immune). This could even be together with obsidian gargoyles, black dragons, imperial griffins and so.

At last. The rune of Battle Rage (1 ore + 1 crystal). Makes you unit attack all enemies around it with no retaliation. If you are standing inside the gate, you may attack the enemy in front of you as well as crushing the walls around to bits, making it possible for more of your troops to swarm in faster. Quite powerful.

Just a question

Excuse my ignorance...

I`ve played dwarves only in campaign. Why do some runes cant` be used ? When I hover, it looks broken and says "used".

So runes can be taught with scholar?

I'm afraid most runes have been bugged and don't work at 2.1...

I think you forgot that you didin't have resources then.
There, on the control bar, when u want to use rune, the symbols of resoucers appear. Next to them, there is written, how many resources of each kind u need to activate the rune, and how many u have know.
When the  right No, after slash is 0, it means that u have no resources to use the rune.

Another condition to put the rune more than once is to have Greater Rune ability, 'cause it allows u to put the rune two times in each battle, and any time you want in the following battles. There isn't written anything like this, but as Dwarf Fan i know that, because i have checked it...  
So greater rune is absolute neccesity if u wanna use ur runz more than once.

Anyway, there is one Dwarven special ability that allows u to activate destroyed runz on the creatures it is called Refresh Rune, so if ur outa reswources, or u have used rune twice, you can also refresh it with that skill...

Yes! And that makes Inga a valuable hero for the dwarves. But it makes Mentoring impossible to get as well (since you need Arc int)
I learned most of the runes with King Tolghar from Inga in my last game.

You could have mentioned tons of other tactics with the other runes, but else great job. Ill just write some more:

Rune of magic control: Here the other day i met another dwarf hero, He gave his defenders: Divine strenght and he already had: Dwarven luck, enrage and tons of other buffs. So i had my creature attack him with this rune on and in a few turnes i had all his buffs My troops just got totally strong because of my enemy! You can steal many great things with this rune, love it...

Rune of Etherealness: Can be good for shooters and mostly for Berzerkers, they die quickly and if you have this on they might last enough to kill some more! else its just a nice, stay alive rune

Rune of Resurrection: You lost tons of those berzerkers, well bring them back to live! Indeed.... and then go crazy again!

Rune of Thunderclap: King Tolghar is a pain to fight, he got that on ALWAYS. This is great for Rune Patriarchs, why? Because they hit more then one united and then you might be able to stun more then one! Great little trick and good for stopping the big tier units too...

Rune of Battle Rage: Berzerkers seem to get trapped a lot, activate this and use speciel. They will not hit back and he will do HUGE dmg... again one rune good for every one, got a trapped shooter... use it, Magma dragons that will be able to hit thing behind the other guys...

Rune of Dragonform: Get tons of Magma dragons, raise thier def and att by 100% and unleash them. Same goes for Berzerkers, this on and speciel... They will deal so much dmg that the enemy will be shaking!!

I didn't know that Rune of Magic control actually could steal more  than one ability, and at least not Enraged. Nice!

Rune of dragonform doesn't work with dragons of any kind.. including magma dragons.

I have to ask: How many have a problem with their runes activating? I have heard a few people and I suspect many haven't used the dwarves yet.

Sorry, they steal one at them time ... What i was trying to say...

And Doom? Are you sure they don't work on Magma Dragons? I remember using it on them...

About multiple buff stealing I have an idea. Use rune of battlerage->refresh the rune->use the rune buffstealer in next round!
I haven't tried it so I don't know if it works.

Thats sounds like a nasty idea!! It could actully work pretty well and woah think of 6 (maxium that can be around you) buffs out of 1 attack... Brillant! Good thinking !

What do you mean? The refreshing just activate an old, used rune. You can put on as many runes you want, one at a time.

But I haven't found Refreshing so useful yet as I am usually busy with other spells. If you only put one rune on a creature though, You can refresh this one for sure. So Dragonform or Battle Rage / Berserking could turn out to do devastating lots of damage!

Let me guess, rune of charge AND rune of elemental immunity. I have the same problem but someone from Elrath.com was kind enough to post it on Nival's forum. Hopefully that will get their attention. As I have come to understand only few with the eu version have this problem...
