How about turning off the firewall? If you are just trying to connect to his computer and he is trying to do the same with you, then would you really need the Firewall active?

Try to turn it off for both computers and then see what happens. Usually Firewalls may block out a port that is unable to be found easily, and turning the firewall off might be needed.

I do not recommend you do this while you are browsing the internet though

Both firewalls turned off, and still TotE is crashing.

I don't think the problem lies within firewall settings anymore. Other ideas ?

Do you have the same version of Windows? Different versions might not "cooperate" e.g. Win 98 does not go well with Win XP.
Maybe you could try to play ToTE with someone other to see if the problem is in yours or you friendīs computer.

Not only do we have the same Windows version, but we also have the same XP service pack (2), so the problem is not there.

Could it be because of a loose network cable? It's weird that HoF sometimes works, other times not.

Other that that, I've got nothing... What else ?

"What else?" Simply by doing this next :

Goto Control Panel, System Properties, Device Manager and, Network Adapters. Check out its controller chipset's driver to see how old they both are on each PC(yours and your friend's). If they both are at 2001 and 2002, you will need to do an Update Driver Button search for doing just so.

The reason for all this, HoMM5-T.o.t.E. has been remade entirely from scratch upto version 3.0. Therefore, made primarily for WinVista Home Premium Edition. Yours and your friend's is dating back upto 2004(SP2's installation)but, the rest of the drivers and the O.S. main files still date back upto 2001(7 years ago). HoMM5-T.o.t.E.'s interface need the most recent versions of XP(post 2004's Media Center Edition upto 2005/6).

As for my very old machine, I had to update manually every single driver I had in order to, firstly, upgrade my O.S. to WinVista Home Basic Edition(February 2006's release date) then download all newest programs, features and, newest drivers for my aging hardware. Last Fall, Upgraded to WinVista Home Premium Edition(November 2006's release date). The last upgrade required(since last year)upto 40 major O.S. upgrades and updates. All of my System Folder's files are, now, at February/March 2008's outmost recent status.

So, what I am mainly saying, do not do what I went through, both of you are way better off investing in an overall PC system upgrade with the WinVista Home Premium already preinstalled. Reinstall your copies of HoMM5-Tribes of the East's Stand-Alone product v.3.0. I am totally sure that your Proxy codes will be in a way better shape for multiplayer gameplay as for all this ordeal is gone through.

Do not know the exact monies to shed out for this upgrade but, the chances are, will probably end up being way cheaper than my own efforts at updating/upgrading my old and aging full tower rig(I ended up wanting to upgrade to a way better rig anyway, darn it).

Good Luck with both ya!

Steps for making multi work right:

- Latest patch...1.6 or 2.1, 3.0

- both people have exceptions in the firewall for hereos v (whatever version)

- you can ping each other

- only the map you are playing in the maps folder (or none if it is a nival map)

- No mods or if using mods both people have exactly the same mod

- If possible only the save you are playing in the saves folder

___

I can't think of anything else, the game multi programming sucks...

Doesn't matter. If the requirements for the game is Windows 2000, or Above, then it will work.

Couldn't this have been done with about 5 driver installs (installs of the necessary drivers to make your machine run) and getting the new OS?

Wouldn't you need to do that many drivers if you get the newer hardware setup? I know that installing new drivers seems like a good idea if you have old hardware, but wouldn't getting new hardware to work at full efficiency with Win Vista be a better idea?

We both have 2.10 for HOMM V, HoF and 3.0 for TotE

Both firewalls off, with exceptions allowed for all Heroes games...

Done that, works perfectly.

To be honest, we only tried this map - Dragon Pass -, and since we kept on getting disconnected, I found that another try would also fail...

No mods for neither of us..

Quote:

I tried to host the game without autosave settings, and after a few tries, with it, and the folder was previously empty on both occasions.

And should Windows be the problem, I doubt I'll install Vista anyway.

Have you tried letting your friend host the game?

Also, the possibility of a virus or spyware or anything related to that might be the problem. Have you done any virus scans recently with both your computer and your friends computer?

Even if we change host-join roles, the game stil crashes... I must admit, it lasts around half an hour longer , but still it isn't a solution.

We use Nod and Add-aware an scanned our computers until they were clean. I don't know what else to use to scan it anyway.

Well I have to ask as many questions as possible in order to hopefully figure out what the problem is.

Is the LAN cable in good condition?
Could you tell me exactly what programs that both you and your friend are running when you try to host the game?

I think that one of them are conflicting with the game.

No problem, ask as many, I'll try to answer in best conditions

Must admit that network cable is a little iffy... one end has the "click" pin broken, so sometimes it can be pulled out without any difficulty whatsoever. But, again, wouldn't that trouble other lan multiplayer games as well? We only had problems with Heroes.

When I host, neither of us has any other program working... in task manager, Nod, Explorer and a couple others are opened, but nothing that comes directly from us.

Hmm, I see I see. Perhaps the lan cable is being pulled out at times and maybe that might be the cause of your sudden connection drops?

I don't know if that is the case.we play a lot of real time strategy, action and  no problem.this is the only game that we have multiplayer issues. As far as i'm concerned it can't be the cable.
Does the game have a multiplayer option tab.maybe i must change something there.

Well other than that, I am pretty sure it has to do with the ports. Are you sure that you have done all the port forwarding and everything?

I might have done some mix-ups

For example, what should I set on my computer in "Name" and "Port number"? And should I fill in only the TCP or the UDP tab ?

And what should my friend set on his computer, too ?

The name is the name of the Port I would imagine, whether it is TCP or UDP. The port number is the port numbers that I gave to you above.

Hmm, I am a bit confused. Are you able to give me a screenshot of what you are talking about?
