Rofl! That would not make sense, you don't just leave your future income in other people's hands. And since they own the franchise and have invested in it it's a sure bet.

Obviously, different developer teams would be in charge of a web-based game and a classic game like HoMM6. So I don't understand why you would worry about that.

As for why it's free, Geny says it already: they want to increase the HoMM franchise awareness. A web-game is trendy, targets a slightly different type of people, is multiplayer at its core, can be a great community-builder...

If you like web-based games like Travian, then you'll certainly love this one. If it's not your thing, then at least it shows Ubisoft's interest for the HoMM franchise: they're not letting it down, they're trying new things with it.

About 15mn of play, the concept of such games is to give your orders once or twice a day, and then it takes time for them to be carried out. For example, you build the next dwelling: you spend gold and resources (which accumulates over time), and there's a certain delay. You can see the time bar on top in the screenshots.
The meaning of Fabrice's comment is only to point out that you can play over a few months, just by checking in several minutes once a day.

What I find kind of idotic is that the web game get's mixed classes and the actual doesn't have them... Well maybe there will be stuff like that in H6.

Sounds like playing a chess game with being limited to 1-2 moves each day  Maps are preferably small I presume. Well I wouldn't say whether it's gonna be boring or not, not until I try it myself. To log in consistently each day can be troublesome though. But heck we got addicted checking on HC everyday anyway

A game that forces you to play only 15 minutes each day?  What kinda crap is that?

That's like a cigarette that forces you to smoke only 1/2 an inch of it everyday.

Absolutely true ). It seems that the battle style is something like in a TBS game before heroes III(I don't remember it's name correctly but it was the same way - bars and stuff told u something about the outcome of the battle). Battle interaction would be GREAT thought(no terrain will not make it less strategic then Disciples - as u cannot move ur units in Disciples too) - at least some option to target the enemy stack u want killed.

Most such games do not force you to play 15 minutes a day...

You can pick whatever you want, to play 5 mins a day, or do half hour one day a week, or any other combination that suits your needs and login times.
Note that most web based games had no interference with big companies like ubi, so it will surely have much more potential when compared to 3-member teams that build alternative games.

Officials from French publisher and developer Ubisoft have announced that the company is planning to release the Web-based game Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms worldwide in spring 2008, in a co-development with Chinese developer TQ Digital.

Although the long-running fantasy series remains only a niche franchise in the West, it is Ubisoft’s best selling title in China. As a result, plans for an online version of the game were first revealed in October, when the game was known merely as Heroes Of Might And Magic Online.

The title will be a co-development with Chinese developer TQ Digital Entertainment, a subsidiary of publisher NetDragon. The game will remain primarily a strategy title, albeit now set in a persistent high fantasy world where users can rule their own virtual kingdoms or command large armies.

The game will require no download or installation to play, merely an Internet connection. Beta test keys are included in copies of Heroes of Might and Magic: Complete Edition, wich was shiped 14 december, or interested parties can register at the official website.

“This is a new type of game for Ubisoft, one that allows you to jump into a rich and complex universe just with your Web browser,” said Serge Hascoët, Ubisoft’s chief creative officer. “Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms will open a wide door to the Might and Magic universe, allowing players to immerse themselves within it unlike ever before.”

This is the article from gamasutra:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16648
skullman, you have to cite your source when copy-pasting like that, it's the elementary quoting rule. Especially when the original author gets it so wrong!

Let this be clear for everyone: Heroes Kingdoms HAS NOTHING TO DO with Heroes Online from TQ Digital. I said it clear in my news on AoH. Apparently, some journalists are just too lazy to check their facts though. I hope this is not a standard practice on gamasutra, because it does not speak highly of their stories' accuracy!
Good work, mister David Jenkins!

Can the post above be edited to:
- show that it's copied from Gamasutra
- make it clear that it is NOT TRUE

To be complete, here's Fabrice's comment on this news on gamasutra:
"A short note to clear the confusion : HoMM Kingdoms is a webbased game developed and published by Ubisoft, announced this week and destined to be played worldwide.
It has no link whatsoever with the title developed and published solely by TQ Digital, Heroes Online, first announced four years ago, and destined to the chinese market only. Except, of course, that it is placed under the same franchise name, Heroes of Might and Magic."
- Fabrice Cambounet

I hope this clears things up.

From This forum post
Ubisoft forum

Will this game be completely free?”

You can play the game for free as long as you want! You can build your city, hire heroes, play every feature, form alliances with other players and enjoy the game. However if you want to develop your kingdom without any limits, enter the rankings and be a part of the story, you will have to subscribe to HOMM Kingdoms at a small cost.
One of our main objectives is to ensure the game is balanced, that is why we don’t plan to include any item selling system or any other buyable features / specific skills.

“There are a lot of free web games, so standing out will be hard. What makes this game different and stand our from the others?”

HOMM Kingdoms is not a mini game, it’s a real web based MMO. You can take a look at the graphics to have an idea of the quality level we want to establish in terms of visuals.
Concerning the gameplay, the game is deep and offers three different gameplay types depending on the way you like to play (more details to come ).

“I hope no there is no activex, cuz a lot of people use Mozilla Firefox.”

HOMM Kingdoms works perfect with Firefox. We don’t use ActiveX or Flash but purely Javascript and AJAX.

“Will it be translated into several languages?”

The game will be available in several languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. We are looking into the possibility to implementing additional languages.

“How much similar to the old HoMM gameplay will this game be?”
“Will this game be a sort of Heroes 3 online, or will it resemble H5 more?”

HOMM Kingdoms uses HOMM V visuals and the well-known Heroes gameplay. We will be releasing more details each week until the launch of the Beta.

“When you create a province in HOMM kingdoms will you be placed at random location or will you be able to play with friends as a "gang of provinces"”

Interaction between players is an important aspect of the game so you will have the choice. You can choose to be placed randomly on the map or join your friends. If you want to join your friends’ alliance or simply appear next to someone, you just have to enter their name to be placed near them.

“Can players create alliances, clans or guilds? If yes - what about multi-race alliances?”

You will be able to create multi-race alliances. It allows you to choose the race you want to play and join any alliance. I’ve seen that some of you have already started to create guilds; it’s a great way to team up with your friends and work together to be the best!
