Mitsu was busy discussing with the dwarf and others when Azagal walked in the forge.  Of course she had barely met the man, nor did she know what he might be doing here.  Her mind works oddly, however, and what she saw was a fresh worker.  Probably one that hadn't yet been told of the blistering heat she could cook up when working.  Not about to waste an opportunity, she called out.

"You there!  This is probably going to be a long strategy session.  Since nobody else seems to have the guts to come here, how about poking your head outside and getting somebody's attention.  Have them bring us some cold drinks and hot food.  I'm starving!"

The question breaks my thought.

"What do I think? I think I need to get out of this place for a little while. Go cool down. Gather some more protection from this heat, at least. Maybe I will go for a ride as well. I will be back later."

I head out, spend some time casting Phantom Steed, and ride away. It doesn't take long before the steed and I get within viewing distance of the tower. I guide the steed over to the tower, hovering next to it. I give Jarvus a quick greeting.

"You were never the most observant apprentice on the planet."  Speaking of all things tactful, Onyx enters the forge.  "That man isn't the help.  He's here to pick up his new arm."

He walks over to wear the arm is resting and examines it.  "Nice work," he mumbles.  "I'm impressed."  He takes it over to Azagal but doesn't hand it to him.  ((Har har har ))  "I think it might be able to hold one more enchantment, which I will do later.  But right now Jarvus's tower is sitting on top of Saphire's bar and it would probably be a good idea to see what he is doing.  I'm sure Moon and the others are there now."  Agreeing, the others join him in meeting the master of the tower.

===================================================================

"A word of advice, Dagoth, do not anger Jarvus inside his tower.  It will one of the last things you ever do" the queen says cryptically as she walks quickly out of her castle with the young warlock in tow.  It's snowing lightly outside, gently coating the masses milling towards the gigantic tower in the center of city.  The two cut through the crowd with ease, snaking their way towards the verbally abusive bard hurling insults towards the structure.

"I AM GOING TO DRAG YOU OUT OF THAT TOWER AND RIP OFF YO-" she stops as Moon and Dagoth approach.  Moon surveys the remains of the recently flattend tavern with a faint grin.  "You just don't have luck with bars do you, Saph?"

"Do you see what he did to my bar?!  It took weeks to build that!  The one time I get some time to finally construct a lovely tavern, that ASS" she shouts up to the tower "had to go and destroy it!"

"I'm sure he'll build you a new one when this is all over" Moon's voice carries little conviction.  As Saphire prepares to rebut, Moon notices Fate and quickly singals him.  "WINTERFATE!  GET OVER HERE!"  Obiediently, the Ranger appears and he, Moon, and Dagoth head for the tower's door.  "OH!  I am SO going to give him a piece of my mind!" Saphire declares as she storms past the three into the structure.

Curious mechanical constructs shuffle around the tower floors, tweaking and cleaning the dust off of guages.  The tower looks radically different than Moon and Fate remember, resemebling the city foundry more than an aracne marvel.  Large iron gates line the floor, angrily venting steam at the machine men performing checks.  The grinding of large gears adds a sense of rhythm to their clockwork movements.  One bumps into Dagoth and says nothing as it trudges along, oblivious to the puzzled warlock.  A small service elevator sits at the far end of the main floor, attended by a lone metallic figure.  It's head was decorated with two yellow orbs and a weird, wire-mesh box.

"The master expects you.  Please enter the lift" it says flatly.  Moon glances at the curious creature and quickly gets on the lift with the others.  Two minutes later they arrive at the Lord's room.

"Ah, Moon.  It's good to see you again" Jarvus says breaking away from his conversation with Blake.  He rises from his throne and walks over to the queen, extending his hand and bowing politely.  "Blake was just telling me how you ascended the throne here.  Quite a tale."
"YOU!" Saphire intercepts the mage, a finger juts into his chest. "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!"
"Wha-?"
"YOU DESTROYED BY BAR, YOU ASS!" Saphire spits.
"Oh, that little thing.  I doubt it'll take you long to rebuild it."
"YO-" Saphire's voice is cut off, leaving only the sound of the steadily grinding gears.
"Now is not the time for this.  The adults have important matters to discuss" Jarvus says as he lowers his hand.  Dagoth can't help but gulp as Moon's warning swims to the surface of his mind.  Saphire glares at him for a second and storms off to find a place to sit.

"Tactful as ever.  Good to see you haven't changed much, Jarvus, unlike your tower."  Moon says as she motions to the machinary piping and pumping in the throne room.  The robot minions clamor around, testing and adjusting complicated dials and levers.  "Why do you need any of this?"

Jarvus returns to his throne and plops himself down.  "Times are changing faster than any of us can control.  I decided to reinforce my tower for the battle ahead."
"You mean-"
"Yes.  I will join you.  I fear you will need all the help you can get.  Oh, and speaking of, I made something for you.  Fate, could you please get it for me?  It's sitting on the pedestal behind little Ms. Pouty over there."  Saphire grits her teeth at the jab, silently swearing revenge on the windbag.  Just then, General Vlad, Jade, Onyx, Mitsu, Ceres, Azagal, and Elvin arrive.  "What is with this place?" Jade asks as she looks around the transformed throne room.

"I've done a little decorating since you were last here.  I'll show you more later, but right now, I was just unveiling my latest creation to her majesty."  Jarvus motions over to the pedestal.

As Fate walks over  to retrieve the item, he stops dead in his tracks.  Moon walks over to see what the problem is and stops as well.  "What is this?" she asks.

"The ritual to summon and shape it took me a very long time but it should do the trick.  It was easier than I thought it would be, but I suppose it helps to have limitless power at my disposal" Jarvus chimes thoughtfully.  Moon doesn't hear him.  She doesn't hear Onyx asking her what's wrong.  She doesn't hear anything.  All of her attention is focused on the ornate hourglass standing lazily in front of her.

I look at the hourglass, shocked. I remark:

"Thought I'd never see this again."

I take an educated guess as to why Jarvus has reformed the hourglass, and tell him in an asking tone, to see if I'm correct:

"I assume we have to trap the Powers back in the hourglass, right?"

When I see the hourglass, I groan. "Great. I smell another epically convoluted plan in our future. Does anyone remember when an old-fashioned thrashing of mythical proportions was enough to win the day? Good times... I think I need a drink."

"No kidding" replies Jade.  "All these magic devices and what not really get in the way of good, clean, killing time."

"If you want to try and take on storm giants, mind flayers, and demons without my help, by all means, go ahead!"  Jarvus turns his back on the two after a "hmph," turning his attention to the young ranger.  "Wait.  How could you have known what this device is for?  I just created it.  It's the first of it's kind."

"What?" asks Jade increduously.  "That can't be.  As Fate said, that's what was used to trap the powers.  I saw it with my own eyes. Dragon shattered it and turned our lives upside down.

Jarvus continues to eye his creation, tilting it in hopes of divinig some answer.  "What?  Are you sure?  How could have the Highlord gotten his his hands on something that didn't exist?"

"Isn't it obvious, oh great tower wizard?" Saphire cuts in.  "The Highlord is the future version of Sun, so he must have used time travel to get his hands on it.  Just begs the question of why he would go out of his way to capture the powers and then have us free them later."

Dagoth was stunned by the amount of power that Jarvus emanated. Normally, I would have a drink, now, or be dancing with a fair maiden, but not in some tower with an insanely powerful human surrounded by people who seem to have mastered jibbertalk.

Highlord? Sun? An hourglass? This all sounded like the ravings of a madman, but I sensed the pure magic practically dripping of the hourglass. A warlock was the controller of magic in its purest form. They had no need of refining magic... Pure instinct coming from this and my ancestors told me that I shouldn't be interfering with all of this.

Well, I remained quiet and in silent awe.

Mitsu watched silently, her face an unreadable mask.  Why she was here was a mystery to her.  She should be back at the forge, working.  Not listening to yet another 'power' talk about how important or powerful they were.  When and if the group needed her, they would know where to find her, and that she would do what was required.

Slipping out of the meeting silently, she worked her way back to the forge.  She didn't give one fig about this Jarvas person.  On the way back to the forge, she stops by the statues that once were two people who she did respect. She didn't know what to make of what she found.  Onyx would.

Doing a quick Messanger spell, she describes what she has found. Maybe this Jarvas would be of use after all.  Perhaps he could awaken the two here.

Thinking to herself.  Of course it might be better if he stayed out of it.  When people with too much power get bored, it is the innocents who pay.

I look at Vlad and remark:

"One of life's little mysteries, I assume."

I smile slightly and then look at Saphire, then at Jarvus:

"So I was right. This is an uncomfortable feeling. Does this mean that we may see the Highlord again, even though we defeated him?"

((Time paradox much? That's what I'm hinting at.))

I look at Vlad and grin, saying:

"I may need a drink as well. We're starting to get into one of those murky subjects that are better left unexplored."

The hourglass stares intently back, its sheer power draws the wizard in closer and closer.  Soon he finds himself unable to avert his attention as the tower starts to melt away.  The timepiece, its pedestal, and the wizard are the only things left standing the void.  "Closer, closer," the device beckons.  The wizard obeys.  An evil grin forms on the bottom half, accented by piercing eyes on the upper.  A wooshing sounds fills Blake's ears as the demonic device begins to suck him into oblivion.

He can't resist.  Soon he will be trapped for eternity.

"Blake?  Blake!" A hand rips the mage backwards, sending the gasping Blake crashing to the floor.  Jarvus scoops up the hour glass and places into a black velvet satchel.

"You must be careful around such things, young one.  They tend to have a mind of their own."

"Well, it's a long story that won't make much sense, so I'll just say that he's the reason why we're here fighting the various races now."

I leave it at that, knowing full well that the long version of the story is one that would take much too long to tell at the moment.

Two violet phantoms pop up next to the rune mage.  The astral projections observe the scene with grim silence.  Jarvus’s image walks over to the proverbial scene of the crime.  “What are we looking at here, Onyx?”
Onyx’s phantasm looks grave. “This was where two of our comrades sealed away the Night Lord with the Codex de Sol.”
“The Codex de Sol?”  Jarvus raises an eyebrow as he investigates further, tracing a finger along several footprints lying on the ground.  “Hmmm… to unbind such powerful magic… mortal magics can not accomplish such a feat.”  He sniffs the air in a fashion that proves that all senses are available to projections.  “There’s a taint to this place… Demonic.”
“So they freed the Night Lord.  Apprentice, get back to the castle.”  The projections vanish with a faint crack.

“Hello?  Hello?” Sapphire waves her hand in front of Jarvus’s blank expression.  The lack of reaction to the middle digit dancing in front of the tower mage’s face confirms nobody is home.  “You think he could have at least let us know he was projecting.  That does it.  I’m out of here!”  She heads for the lift, followed by Jade, and Ceres ((Since Ceres is MIA at the moment, I’m taking her character over.  I suppose that’s pretty obvious though so this was pretty pointless to type.  Err… disregard that)).  “Fill us in on the details later, will you?  There’s plenty more to be done than waiting around for those two to get back.”

As the lift descends, Onyx and Jarvus snap back to attention.  Jarvus immediately notices the decline in numbers.  “How rude!  We wer-“
“The Night Lord is free” the rune maser cuts in.
“What?!”  Moon asks incredulously.  “How?”
“We aren’t exactly sure but Jarvus suspects that the demons are involved.  Some really powerful magic is at work.”
“I see.”  Moon ponders for a bit and heads for the stairs.  “Vlad, get the troops ready.  We march in three days.  Everybody else, prepare yourselves.”

=====================================================================

Frosthold awakes from an uneasy slumber to a dull, windless sky.  Thousands of soldiers, clad in steel armor and blue capes await nervously outside the city walls.  The magic students fritter about, quickly trying to organize various arcane objects and scrolls.  Fate’s scout squad, consisting of a rag-tag gang of hunters and trappers, stands further away from the main force scouting the area for any surprises.  Unfortunately the rapid deployment made it possible to only develop two deadly war machines but the city already had some already built from earlier times.  A bit crude in comparison to the newer models but deadly none-the-less.  The enigmatic druids from the surrounding region have gathered a small legion of woodland critters for the cause, rallying the forces of nature to the noble cause.  To everyone’s disappointment (with the possible exception of Sapphire), Jarvus’s tower blasted into the sky the night before, robbing the army of the tower mage’s vast power.  The sheer diversity and spirit of the troops gave Jade a sense of hope as she marched around inspecting troops.  Not the most powerful army amassed but it certainly would put up a fight.  Satisfied they were as ready as they were ever going to be, Jade turns her attention towards the general’s tent.

“We’re looking at about 5,000 strong, general.  That’s all we could raise on such short notice.”  Jade herself is wearing heavy plate armor coated with small spikes designed to deflect blades of all kind.  Her long ponytail has been cut off, leaving plenty of room for the immaculate helmet resting under her left arm.  In her right, she’s holding a savage looking spear, perpetually dripping with a faint green liquid.  “It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a battle on this scale.”

Moon, Vlad, Onyx, and the others are huddled over a makeshift table, tracing invisible strategies over an unfurled map.  Small figurines representing the five armies flank a large blot in the center of the map.

“Do you have the shards, Onyx?"  Moon asks.
"Yes."
"Good.  So the demons have one, one is at Godspire, and the other seven are with you."
Onyx nods.  "They wanted to draw us out and they succeeding.  We have no choice but to fight."  He sighs.  "I don't think we can defeat them conventionally.  Even with the help of the Shadow Thieves, we still have three extraordinarly powerful powers to deal with.  Stratus, the eldar brain, and the demon prince..." he trails off.

"But if we can secure the shards, we should be able to stop them right?"  Sapphire asks hopefully.
"Hopefully.  With the shards, we should be able to summon a djinn and stop them all.  Plus we can always seal them away with the hourglass if we can't reach the shards" he adds.

"Sounds like a plan.  Ok, we have the storm giants, flayers, and demons?  Who wants a piece of who?"  Moon asks.

I sadden as I remember how Fiya perished, at the hands of Omega's doppelganger.

"Figures.  Not only was Jarvus apprantly not up to the task of freeing them, but so much for his claim he was going to assist us.  We will not need him, however.  We will be victorious." She was on edge from the approaching battle.   Along with her normal lack of social graces, she had had little sleep.  When she was not in the forge, she was with Onyx practicing.  When she was not with Onyx, or in the forge, she was with Elvin.

It was not as if she could sleep very good anyhow.  She could not help but keep coming back to how badly she had failed.  At least back to how badly she believed she had failed.  Several of her companions were dead, and she had vowed to protect them all.  Yet she had been powerless.  It gave her dark nightmares, and although any rational person would know she was not at fault, she could not see that.

She didn't need much sleep, thankfully.  Going up to Elvin, she asked if she could ride with him and sleep on the way.  Most likely she would be unable to ride by herself, since she would pass out in the saddle.
