Almost there. Almost freaking there... the moment that Graveler came back out, things were going to get bumpy, but all of its best moves would hurt Bandra's team more than they hurt the good guys. And as much as he didn't like the idea of sacrificial pokemon... "Wain, have caterpie intercept attacks for Swinub, and if any of these pokemon" like the Zigzagoon, "have quick attack, have them use it on the Sandslash. Happiny should intercept attacks for Spoink." At this point, there was likely very little that any of the intercepting pokemon would do to actually hurt Bandra's remaining pokemon. And the team needed to keep some of the buffed 'mon up in order to deal with the graveler. "Swinub, Spoink, keep it up!" Hopefully those two would be able to finish off their main targets.

At the older trainer's suggestion, Mark just turns his head and asks, "... What?"

"Wain, have caterpie intercept attacks for Swinub –

Mina looks up from her Pokédex. “What?

Ranger Wain looks aghast. “Are you trying to get that Pokémon killed?!!”

But the brave little Caterpie has heard the command and takes a defensive posture in front of Swinub, though anyone looking can see the little Bug type shaking.

Ranger Wain sends out Caterpie, Happiny, and Serranix!

Pointed stones dig into Caterpie!
Caterpie takes 8 damage!
Pointed stones dig into Happiny!
Happiny takes 7 damage!
Pointed stones dig into Serranix!
Serranix takes 3 damage!

Ariados C uses Shadow Sneak!
Happiny intercepts the attack!
No effect!

Ariados D uses Shadow Sneak!
Happiny intercepts the attack!
No effect!

The Happiny slides backwards from the twin blows but is otherwise unaffected, and afterwards she strikes a pose.

Serranix uses Quick Attack!
Sandslash D is hit for 11 damage!

Magneton D uses Magnet Bomb!
Caterpie intercepts the attack!
Caterpie is hit for 83 damage!
Caterpie faints!

Sandslash D uses Rollout!
Attack missed! ((The dice love you right now. ))

Swinub uses Icy Wind!
It’s super effective!
Sandslash D is hit for 33 damage!
Sandslash D faints!
Machoke D is hit for 14 damage!
Machoke D’s Speed falls!
Ariados C is hit for 16 damage!
Ariados C’s Speed falls!

Spoink uses Psybeam!
It’s super effective!
Machoke D is hit for 37 damage!

Machoke D uses Seismic Toss!
Swinub is hit for 32 damage!

There’s some arguing going on on the Bandra side of the field, but finally the expected Graveler comes back out.

Bandra forces send (back) out Graveler E!

The moment the dust clears, Mark pulls the unconscious little catterpie back, hands it to Mina, whips out one of his last superpotions that he uses on the swinub, and only then responds. By lifting his mechanical arm hand-up with a mechanical whirr. "We keep playing this safe and we will all die. You, me, the pokemon we were here to free, everyone. We need to stop trading away all of our pokemon that can deal with their heavy hitters..."

Narrowing his eyes at the last Bandra graveler, he adds, "Which they will only have one more of after this round. Wain, the zigzagoon we have should block for Swinub, swinub should finish their machoke, hit the graveler and do what he can to that magneton. Happiny, you're doing great! Keep intercepting those attacks. The spoink should focus on their Graveler if that machoke is down. The Serranix is a fighting type... if it has fighting moves, then it should focus those on that Graveler as well." While a single earthquake might wipe out most of their opponents, it would also take out the entire team's remaining 'mon. So if they could take down the graveler before it could act, that would be for the best.

"We keep playing this safe and we will all die. You, me, the pokemon we were here to free, everyone. We need to stop trading away all of our pokemon that can deal with their heavy hitters..."

“‘Playing this safe?!!’” Mina’s tone is obviously disgusted. Says the one who came charging in here with no plan!

Wain and Pellana are yelling too.

“We did not come here to sacrifice the Pokémon we came to save!”

“’If’ it has a Fighting attack, do you have a Pokédex or not?!” (Pellana punctuates this by shoving her Pokédex in Mark’s face: there are, in fact, zero Fighting-type attacks in the Serranix’s current moveset, even counting the status moves.)

((Hone Claws (Dark)
Quick Attack (Normal)
Snarl (Dark)
Backlash* (Spectral)
Round (Normal)
Veneer* (Steel)))

Ranger Wain sends out Zigzagoon! ((Which is maybe not accurate when he’s busy yelling at you but whatever, the Zigzagoon is now on the battlefield. ))
Pointed stones dig into Zigzagoon!
Zigzagoon loses 5 HP!

Mark uses Super Potion on Swinub! ((-1, 5 remaining))
Swinub regains 32 HP!

Mina uses Salac Berry on Swinub! ((-1, 1 remaining))
Swinub’s Speed rose sharply!

Swinub uses Icy Wind!
It’s super effective!
Graveler E is hit for 39 damage!
Graveler E’s Speed falls!
Machoke D is hit for 16 damage!
Machoke D faints!
Magneton D is hit for 7 damage!
Magneton D’s Speed falls!

Ariados D uses Bug Bite!
Happiny intercepts the attack!

Perhaps a little overconfident after the last round, the Happiny braces, clearly expecting her boosted defenses to save the day.

Unfortunately having her Defense tripled doesn’t make much difference when the starting number is 11.

Happiny is hit for 52 damage!
Happiny faints!

Serranix uses Snarl!
It’s not very effective…
Magneton D is hit for 7 damage!
Magneton D’s Special Attack falls!
Graveler E is hit for 20 damage!
Graveler E’s Special Attack falls!
Ariados C is hit for 18 damage!
Ariados C’s Special Attack falls!
Critical hit!
Ariados D is hit for 34 damage!
Ariados D’s Special Attack falls!

A tiny corner of Mina’s mind notes that the debuff would have been useful if most of the enemy Pokémon weren’t using Physical attacks.

Magneton D uses Magnet Bomb!
Zigzagoon intercepts the attack!
Zigzagoon is hit for 53 damage!
Zigzagoon faints!

Spoink uses Psybeam!
Graveler E is hit for 19 damage!
Graveler uses its held Chahal Berry to restore 20 HP!

Ariados C uses Bug Bite!
It’s super effective!
Spoink is hit for 161 damage!
Spoink faints!

Graveler E uses Rollout!
Swinub is hit for 26 damage!

Fortunately Swinub’s Ground typing nullifies the Ice weakness to Rock, and the little brown Pokémon is still standing.

Across the battlefield, the group can see that most of the Grunts have vacated the chokepoint, and no new Pokémon are added on the Bandra side.

Up to this point, Mark had been managing to keep himself in the game by simply by focusing everything on the fight. Days of no real rest, constantly fighting and being under stress, had been taking a tole on his decision making, on his sleep, and on his ability to relax. But just focusing on the next fight, and moving on to the next objective, had kept him going.

And he had been a decent strategist, all things considered. Nothing to write home about, but there hadn't been many things going in his favor. He'd been trying to work with pokemon he didn't know or have direct control over, coordinating with people he hardly knew, working on a distinct lack of sleep, acting on the advise of some random psychic to try and save one of the last friends he had from home. And up to this point he hadn't broken down.

But he was just a kid. A broken, damaged kid who had seen too many horrors. The bodies of too many friends. And he could only take so much before all of it crushed in.

So when Mina and the adults in the room began screaming at him, Mark snapped. But instead of yelling back, his prosthetic hand just twitched, tears began to gather in his eyes, and he mumbled, "I-I... I... j-j..." He looked between each of them in turn, before growing quiet, stepping back from the second line until he bumped against a cage, and silently weeping.

Looks like someone else would have to coordinate the last parts of this battle, because Mark was done.

And I’m pretty sure the last two Bandra Pokémon can’t survive another round of Icy Wind/Snarl so I’m just going to auto this: ))

The next round is a mess of snow, dark energy and red recall lights but when it ends the Grunts have fled and the way out is clear.

Mina briefly interrupts the shouting. “We need to get out of here now. And we need to get the Pokémon out of here, which is going to be a bit of a problem since most of them don’t have Pokéballs.

((Puzzle time! Here are the rules:

For simplicity’s sake, each trainer can carry 50 lbs (~22.6 kg) of KO’d Pokémon except Pellana who can carry 75 lbs (~34 kg).
The wheelbarrow Mina retrieved can hold 200lbs.
The Pokémon can’t carry anything because they’re all exhausted/malnourished/don’t have hands etc., but the ones that are still conscious can travel on their own (including the Pupawisp. Don’t think about it too hard. )
Pokémon all weigh their standard Pokédex weights.
If you want to take the Taskmaster with, he weights 120 lbs.
The Whismur and the Surskit are both dead.
Remember that unconscious Pokémon can’t be captured and we’re out of Revives of any kind.
Also remember that you are still in Bandra territory so you don’t have unlimited amounts of time to evacuate.))

"Well as we'd better haul our backsides out of here on the double, less we be in trouble, I might suggest these pairings to possibly maximize our rescued pokemon. Geodude with Kriketot. Pachirasu with Zigzaggoon. Vespiqueen, Slakoth, Happiny and Caterpie. Sentret, Ralts, and Zubat. Then Pellana can grab Lombre, Spoink, or Mime Jr. I'm doubtful we can save everyone, but if anyone else has an idea feel free to say it. And speaking of saving..." I say looking down at the Taskmaster,"Anyone object if this one had an....unfortunate accident with a scalpel and perished?"

Mark watched the end of the battle in a dull haze, everything still hitting him in an unrelenting wave that left the world dull and grey. If Wain continued yelling at him, he didn’t notice. Even the fight, which the pokemon took over for themselves now that the humans were busy bickering, would fade as he looks at the pokemon that are most assuredly dead. The surskit sent a new lance of pain through him. That brave little ‘mon had kept Fisher up and aided the team so much, and he didn’t even get the chance to see the end...

Looking at that little body, Mark whispered, “I’m sorry...”

Once the battle is done, and his stress levels calm just the smallest amount, Mark would actually begin to hear everything, including Matt’s plan on which pokemon to take. Which, with a somewhat hollow and clearly drained voice that he had to clear to not sound raw with anguish, Mark responded to by saying simply, “I’m not leaving Marick behind. E-even if that means that I stay behind.” He’d lost too many friends. He refused to walk away on this last one.

As for the taskmaster... “He’s p-probably the one that killed Zelgius.” Mark says, fury starting to cut through the pain and give him a ruthless clarity once more... which fizzled and faded as he looked back at the whismur and surskit. “N-no... no. There has b-been t-too much death already.” Shaking his head and wiping away the new tears in his eyes, Mark staggers his way to his aron and kneels down to try and get into a proper lifting position. His mechanical arm likely won’t be up to the task. “Just... t-take his pokemon and anything he has left a-and l-leave him.” Which would hopefully cut off the taskmaster's effectiveness at the knees as far as a continued threat to Helnith was a concern.

Using his pokedex, he also tries to identify previously owned pokemon that might still have owners from the wild ones. Because while he would love to save them all... the ones with masters and homes waiting for them had to take priority.

Mina coaxed the Serranix closer – with difficulty, the Dark/Fighting type was acting very skittish now that the fight was over – and started applying Potions while the others talked. No sense letting their guard down now. ((-3 Potions, 2 remaining, Serranix is now at full HP.)) Once Serranix had realized Mina wasn’t going to hurt her (the Pokédex declared it to be female) the Dark type crowded up against Mina’s legs as if to hide, which was a little uncomfortable given that the Pokémon was covered with saw-like teeth. ((…Which I’d completely forgotten about during the fight. ))

“I don’t like leaving the Bronzor here,” Ranger Wain muttered. “It helped us get here.”

Pellana was apparently on his side, though she was stroking the unconscious Makuhita mournfully. Unsurprisingly the sickly Fighting type didn’t look any healthier unconscious. “Plus we’d be leaving a high level Pokémon here for Bandra to find.”

Still with a terrified Dark Pokémon glued to the back of her legs, Mina went over to the altar and eyed the ritual knife. It was liberally covered with blood and dripping onto a mess of tiles on the altar. (The latter were arranged like a Scrabble game and Mina wondered what ‘Hydreigon’ was.) “Ranger Wain, do you have a bag and maybe some gloves?”

“I might. Why?”

“This probably has fingerprints all over it. Most of the Grunts got away, but if they get caught later I’d like them to go to prison for a long, long time.”

“Anyone object if this one had an....unfortunate accident with a scalpel and perished?"

“Just... t-take his pokemon and anything he has left a-and l-leave him.”

“I don’t care either way,” Mina replied, “but if you’re going to take his stuff anyway take the uniform too – we still need to get out of here, and if one of us could pose as a Taskmaster that will be a lot easier.”

"Or... we could wake him up and force him to carry pokemon out... If the Pupawisp can make some string for a solid rope we can have him like a dog on a leash. Hell we could tie a pokemon to him and force him to carry it. If he doesn't, so help me god I'll neuter him."

Mina scanned the tiny remainder of conscious Pokémon. “No Stringshot.” Caterpie had it, but Caterpie was one of the KO’s. Doubtfully, she offered, “I still have duct tape.”

Ranger Wain interjected. “I have some rope.”

((Results from Mark’s scan:

The Vespiquen has a Pokéball registration, but the majority of the other Pokémon don’t, including Marick (who you know had a trainer). There are, however, a number of Pokémon with stat increases that suggest someone trained them at some point, and they are:

Lombre
Sentret
Pachirisu
Vespiquen (which as noted above, has a Pokéball registration)
Swinub
Mime Jr.
Spoink

The Makuhita doesn’t have the obvious boosts from training that some of the other Pokémon have, but its base Attack is twice what it should be for a member of that species and the Pokédex informs you it will take damage when performing Physical moves.

Also, while the Ralts doesn’t have any stat boosts, he is part Fairy type, which is not typical of the wild Ralts in this part of the world.))

Mark nods at Wain and Pellena's words, and points out each of the trainer pokemon (and potentially trainer pokemon) that he had been able to identify. "Pellena. I-I think you're the s-strongest one of us h-here... Do you think y-you could push the wheelbarrow if we put my Aron and the Bronzor in it?" Trying to judge the space, he adds, "Maybe the Pachirisu too.. b-but on top of the s-steel types."

Rubbing at his eyes a bit, he looks at the remaining pokemon and asks, "W-Was there any fabric in the back? I-I think I remember how to lash a few things s-so we can make stretchers... or maybe just a tarp that w-we could drag. That c-could help us carry the heavier pokemon, like the Vespiqueen... t-though, uh..." Looking between everyone, he adds, "We should probably go before Bandra can g-get helicopters here. Should o-only make two stretchers, o-or one large tarp to not push it. M-Maybe..." Wincing at the idea, Mark says, "M-Maybe we could try hiding some of the injured pokemon we can't carry in the b-bodies? Give them a chance to maybe recover if Bandra t-thinks they are just dead."

Pellana eyes the Steel types doubtfully. “I can try.”

It takes two people to help her get the heavier Pokémon into the wheelbarrow but once all three are in she can move it, barely. “I’m not going to be able to move very fast with this.” She turns to Wain. “Can you get any help here?”

The Ranger is on the radio with Viola. “I’m trying, but the best we can get is a ride once we get out of the mountains.”

Mina perks up, confused. “I thought you said the only other Rangers weren’t going to be able to help for days.”

“Not a Ranger,” he responds. “An ambulance for the Pokémon. They aren’t going to be able to help if we get attacked again.”

"W-Was there any fabric in the back?”

“I think I saw some in that storage room,” Mina replies, and runs back to retrieve it, returning a moment later with what looks to be a giant banner with “MERRY CHRISTMAS” written on it in all caps and cheery font.

"M-Maybe we could try hiding some of the injured pokemon we can't carry in the b-bodies? Give them a chance to maybe recover if Bandra t-thinks they are just dead."

“That’s a spectacular idea,” Mina agrees sincerely, “except that I don’t know how to unseal the exit we came in , and we’d have to back track a lot to use the other one and drop them off ((Mina still doesn’t have access to the OoC thread )) – and if we could carry them that far we might as well get them out of Bandra territory all together. We could try leap-frogging them? Carry some to the next room, put them down, go back and grab some more, carry them forward, and so on?” Mina isn’t keen on leaving any Pokémon behind either.

“There’s no way we can do that without Bandra catching us, it’s slow and obvious.” Pellana points out.

Pulling out the small tent I kept from the location where we found the safe, I motioned to it and start creating a quick travois to be hauled like a backpack for a human.
After frisking the taskmaster for any sharp objects he could use to free himself and being confident that he'll make a great pack mule, I apply the back pack to his arms before duct taping his hands securely behind him. After making sure there's no way he'll wiggle his hands free, I tie a bit of rope to his hands and experimentally lift his arms up behind his back.
"Ah yes, this will work nicely. Now to wake up sleeping beauty."
As I pull out a fresh water, I take the cork off, cover the taskmasters mouth, and poor a little of the water down his nose. With a sudden coughing and spluttering fit, he awakens.

"Good morning simpleton! Glad you've woken up." I say glowering at him and immediately take another piece of duct tape to quickly cover his mouth with. "Up and at 'em." I say assisting him to a standing position. "Oh, and if you think you'll be able to run away." I add lifting his arms up behind him forcing his head down with sweat from pain suddenly soaking his face. "I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you'd rather have dislocated shoulders."

Turning to face the others I say, "Alright, lets load up our pack mule here, I saw a hole in the ceiling behind that door" I say pointing at door C, "Now I'm not certain where it leads, other than 'out', if any of you have been here before and know of a caved in roof and where it might go, well... regardless even if we don't know where it goes... it's better than nothing."

Mark, having been a member of both the junior rangers troop and a group of friends that were members of Joto's military, -specifically the field medic core (because Zelgius had not lied about that bit of his backstory,)- has had a bit of experience with making knots and emergency stretchers. Maybe not as much as Wain, but once Mina gets that tarp the kid would be able to get to work and clearly knew what he was doing as he lashed together a travois. As he works, he listens to what is being said by everyone around him.

Mina pointing out how long it would take makes the boy silent again, his fragile emotional state threatening to cause another break down if he considers what will happen to those pokemon... but making the tarp to help carry a few more out keeps him occupied. Which only continues to fuel his unhealthy coping mechanism of not confronting his emotions and just keeping busy instead.

When Wain mentions that help might be on the way, Mark responds, "H-Hopefully they can meet us close than half-way. This tarp w-won't be the best m-material. It might m-make it to town, but... I don't w-want to test it."

And then Matt spoke.

"Now I'm not certain where it leads, other than 'out', if any of you have been here before and know of a caved in roof and where it might go, well... regardless even if we don't know where it goes... it's better than nothing."

And Mark, pulling the last lashing tight to finish up the emergency get-away tarp(tm) looks up at the older trainer, looks at Mina, and asks both, "W-wait... hole in the ceiling?"

Mina and Ranger Wain carefully pack away the ritual knife and the bloody tiles as evidence while the travois-building occurs. Pellana manages to separate a few bars from the Earthquake-ravaged cages for use as supports.

As Matt searches through the Taskmaster’s pockets, he recalls that he’s already done this when he finds the Taskmaster’s keys already in his pack. He succeeds in binding and waking the Taskmaster, at the cost of a bottle of water and the rest of Mina’s duct tape. ((-1 Fresh Water for Matt, 2 remaining. –1 Duct tape for Mina))

The Taskmaster doesn’t look happy but he doesn’t do anything more than glare angrily, for now.

"Alright, lets load up our pack mule here, I saw a hole in the ceiling behind that door. Now I'm not certain where it leads, other than 'out', if any of you have been here before and know of a caved in roof and where it might go, well... regardless even if we don't know where it goes... it's better than nothing."

"W-wait... hole in the ceiling?"

Mina, having not actually gone through that door, looks faintly puzzled before it turns into a ‘Wait, what?’ expression and then gradually to anger as she turns to Matt and—

—gets beaten to the punch by Pellana. The Gym Leader gapes at Matt for a moment, mouth opening and closing in rapid succession before she blurts out, “You mean you knew about another way out for almost the entire fight?!” (Ranger Wain has to step in very quickly to keep her from clobbering Matt.) “Half those Pokémon are unconscious because of you! We could have escaped in a few rounds!”

Mark blinks a few times, looking between Pellena and Matt, before stepping over to Mina. He saw the look on her face, and, acting as quickly as he could with his fuzzy-headed thoughts, Mark would say, "Uh... M-Mina. L-Let them handle this," he gestures at the ranger and gym leader to make sure the other young trainer understood him. "w-we should go check that hole out a-and see what's on the other side of the hole. C'mon."

And with that, he goes to look in the rooms that Mina hadn't gotten the tarp from, in order to find out which one had the potential escape route. Hopefully Mina was still willing to listen to him at this point.

Mina’s tone and demeanor were decidedly frosty, but she did respond with “Yes, that’s probably for the best,” and went with Mark to check out their potential escape route. ((Door C, FYI))

The corridor in question is L-shaped, with a pile of rubble at the end. But there is, indeed, a hole in the ceiling; it would be a tight squeeze for Pellana with the wheelbarrow, but it looks big enough to escape through otherwise.

There is another, minor problem though, which Mina points out:

“We’re going to need a boost to get up there. Maybe we could stack some boxes up and make stairs for the people walking…”

*sighing* "You are absolutely correct. We could have made a fighting retreat so that more of Bandra's goons could get through the door as we made our escape to send out all of their pokemon, I was certainly not distracted trying to keep wild pokemon alive in fighting form and the chaos of the battle to be thinking about anything else. We could have totally escaped and had Bandra chasing us all the way back to town with their leader here staging an assault with his buddies. That sounds WAY better than narrowly defeating them here to give us a few minutes, IF that, to coordinate a retreat as we are now. I can't believe how foolish I was to not mention that hole sooner." Suddenly a thought occurs, "Hang on, are any of the conscious pokemon psychic with the Teleport ability? Perhaps we could have them port some cargo out for us? Or leveling...wouldn't that....heal some... wake them up..." Running out of ideas, and having a sudden feeling of despair hit him like an 18 wheeler, I slump to my knees with tears welling up in my eyes muttering "Its all my fault" over and over again in little more than a whisper.

Mark considered that hole a bit, trying to think of the best method of getting out through it, and he says, "Well... let's see... we could use the travois as a kind of elevator? Put me, Wain and Pellena up there, use some of the rope to lift, and get up the heaviest unconscious pokemon one-by-one, before... no. No. That would take longer than walking out the front door, wouldn't it? None of us are all that strong, and..." Rubbing at his eyes, a note of frustration comes into his voice as me mutters more to himself than to Mina, "Damn it, if only the makhuita were still conscious, he could easily man the lifting and... b-but instead we came here half-cocked and I'm... I'm s-s..." But before he could break down, the boy pulled his fingers from his eyes and he mutters, "... Wait. W-Waaaaait a second... Mina, start stacking the cages so that we can climb, I need to check something."

Taking out his pokedex, Mark rejoins Wain, Pellena and Matt, scans the unconscious pokemon to see if any of them are shadowed. He's pretty much ignoring the drama to his left while he scans and, if Makhuita (who was clearly abused and the most likely candidate for being shadowed) is, he asks the ranger, "Wain. How much of that de-shadowing stuff do you have on hand?" Because he was pretty sure he'd had plans to de-shadow his Chevalin today before they ran off to fight here, so the ranger should have a bottle or two with him... "B-Because if we can de-shadow a few of these... they should be able to level up and wake up on their own, r-right?"
