@JoonasTo

Try Re: Monster? I stumbled upon this manga (originally a light novel) by chance and take note, it isn't exactly a high-level work of art but it's still fun to read. In this Isekai a guys gets reincarnated as a goblin with a unique ability that makes him stronger/evolve with each "eaten" enemy. He basically becomes this bad-ass oni like humanoid and starts to build his empire while "living to the fullest". You mentioned estabilishing a harem? The guy literally bangs (his quite a stud) every women he accepts as "his" and... makes babies with them. He also either fights various threats/strong enemies or forges alliances while building his domain. Many allies are monsters and they evolve under his guidiance. Did I mention the protagonist is a pragmatic 25 year old guy?

So it's actually very similar to Slime Datta Ken, but apparently it came before it.

I got a feeling it actually might have a high chance to get an animated adaptation, there's even a mobile game already.

You mean the part where they introduce the northern princess proposes to him? That didn’t bother me. Or are you further in the story?

I’ve read LNs only, not read the manga at all so if you’re talking about that I have no clue.

Now watching: Higurashi no Naku Kori ni. It starts out looking like a harem full of moe, then becomes a thriller, then becomes a kind of conspiracy/murder mystery. It's easily the creepiest series I've ever watched - definitely more so than, say, Evangelion.

And now it's my turn going through higurashi. This is unsettling, love it!

EDIT:

Totally worth it, moving on to the next season. I like the route layout and how it allows glimpses of the characters from a different angle. It made me reconsider back and forth whether there actually was a curse or whether what I saw was what actually happened. The series has good use of misdirection. Ending did feel a little standard but I liked the notion that this was but the first step in figuring things out.

Turns out I already watched it, awkward feeling. Didn't even dawn on me that was the reason why it rang a bell, I just went on to assume I've been postponing it.

Been considering Boruto, not sure if I'll actually go for it. Man, what an unsuccessful anime session tonight.
Never mind, saved by JoJo and that Shield Hero thingy which are still ongoing. Will have to check Fall season titles.

In the end, higurashi kai was a disappointment. After a good first half, it degenerates into stupid territory. Trained professionals get outsmarted by children, ridiculous decisions are made, grave situations that used to lead to tragedy are sweeped under the carpet and so on. I would recommend only the first half of the series(13 eps) as it complements the first season nicely and has some much needed explanations and clarifications without which the story would be incomplete. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing but the added insight makes the first season shine brighter.

Kai is less of a horror and more of a conspiracy thriller so it is better watched for the story and not for scares or creepiness. Unlike the first season that keeps stumbling into the unknown, this time things are explained properly. You have a better perspective of the story, the pieces are set and there is a long and arduous road towards the endgame. Sadly the endgame never delivers.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai crossed off the list. Mixed feelings about it, overall good. It felt like there were too many loose ends by the time it finished. The pace was good, the emotion was mature and not overblown, but I think there was more to tell. Also the premise of strange things just happening and "puberty syndrome" didn't hit the mark for me. Kaede end poorly handled, rushed. A bit disappointing, was expecting more out of a 8.5 on MAL. Fairly good watch though.

EDIT: Finished watching Grand Blue. Not much to take home besides the humor which was admittedly pretty damn hilarious at times, even if on the seinen side. I mean they had a huge disclaimer each episode so no one got the wrong idea, it was great. Maybe if it brought some things, some feelings and ideas closer together and gave them a nice finish I'd have more words of praise. Unfortunately that's about it. Would recommend it for the solid comedy.

EDIT: Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro was a good watch, in many ways an excellent anime. Top notch comedy gold with so many awkward moments that explaining porn would be easier, so I am really glad I dodged that bullet because it almost happened. The ending leaves things open, so maybe a second season. Bloopers in an anime, what a fun ride.

EDIT: Yagate Kimi ni Naru, an anime about the not-exactly-right-romance between two high school girls that has kept me thoroughly impressed all throughout. I must admit the Shoujo Ai was a big reason why I wanted to watch it and all I can say is that it was well calibrated to hit the spot. It reminded me of Kuzu no Honkai slightly, but it handles some things so much better such as to not let them end in a spiral of depravity and self-loathing. All events unfold naturally at a consistent pace without anything being forced out of any character. Even the ending, despite being open yet again (is this becoming the status quo nowadays?), was artistic and captivating which makes me believe that if there will ever be a second season I will certainly want to watch it.

Chio was a fun ride. Grand Blue was also cool, it seriously gave me a nostalgic vibe . A bit of a bummer that the romance elements were rather for comic relief purposes if nothing else, there was potential there. Other then that a positive and cheerful anime.

I'm starting to get disappointed in Slime. The plot is starting to get really dumb. Mob 2 on the other hand... damn it's so much more then a series about a kid who beats up everyone after having a rage moment. Its message is actually meaningful and the various animation styles they are using is a treat for the eyes.

Scouring the interwebz late at night and I absolutely need to set myself a reminder for all that has piqued my interest: Noragami, Mob Psycho, Yamada-kun and the seven witches, High Score Girl, Asobi Asobase, Goblin Slayer. Would like to check out a lot more, but these'll have to do for now.

Would also appreciate any recommendations of anime that have impressed you on a personal level. Ones that you think are a must watch or the like.

Noragami s1 is rather average but massively improves in the second one, good watch.
Mob psycho is likable, you can tell it's the same guy who made opm but it's a different story. Not as funny but I empathise more with the characters.
Goblin slayer I suggest the manga because the anime turned out pretty underwhelming. There are also two spinoffs, year one and brand new day.

Personal favourites that you might not have watched..

Mushishi - fantastic atmosphere and interesting situations but no real action.
Your lie in April just in case you haven't seen.
Monogatari series - You've watched most but have you checked kizu and owari? Ignore koyomi except last two eps because they lead directly to s2 owari.
Alderamin on the sky
Spice and wolf
Arslan senki, just good
Shiki - Predatory vampires, rural setting, morality
Baccano - Crazy pace, lots of characters, fun
FLCL for the sheer insanity

Thanks for the recommends, Elvin. Yes, I've seen some, but the other ones seem good as well and I might try them. Shiki and Mushishi especially. Couldn't continue the series after Tsukimonogatari, time to go back? Maybe.

OmegaDestroyer said:

It's like one of the best drama animes I've ever watched.
Why, Omega? Why?

EDIT: Alright, Noragami was not a bad watch, though full with shonen tropes, especially near the end. I feel there was more to tell in a setting like that, many more ways in which the characters could've interacted. The last fight especially felt a bit rushed, two gods of destruction facing off and that was it?! Yet, I'm definitely in the mood to watch some more, so here's me hoping it gets better in the sequel.

EDIT: Noragami Aragoto was indeed better than the first season. I even watched the OVAs. The lighthearted tone it employs at times is definitely welcome, but what I liked more was how it progressed story-wise. Ebisu was one character to really impress me, same goes for Nora. A bit disappointing was Hiyori whose role has been reduced to that of a maiden in distress, almost like Orihime from Bleach. She feels.. extra. How she came up with Yato's real name escaped me as well. Still, fairly good anime overall, hopefully more seasons to come.

EDIT: Aaaaand, since I occasionally like to OD on anime from time to time, I also finished watching Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches in the same day which was, despite appearances and a poor first impression, an actually good anime! The plot was well orchestrated and I got to see such a wholesome ending, it was really well done and satisfying. At one point I wished this was a way more intense mystery thriller because the core tenets were already there, but I can understand the appeal in keeping it clean of gore and violence and rather having some comedic moments thrown in. Would like to check if there's anything noteworthy left in the manga since I see it continued for two more years after the anime aired, but I'm not sure if and when I'll follow through with that desire.

EDIT: Mob Psycho proved to be a mild disappointment. I couldn't shake the comparison with One Punch Man for the obvious parallels and at the end of the day it seems to me that OPM does everything better. Art style, story, characters and their interactions, plot, just all around better. It had some good moments, like Ritsu's awakening and Reigen's fight at the end, but that's about it. I honestly won't drag myself through the second season anytime soon.

The difference with Mob Psycho 100 is that you aren't entirely sure where the plot is going to go.  The big problem with One Punch Man is that every single arc plays out exactly the same way.

1) Threat emerges.
2) Heroes engage and repel enemies.
3) Stronger enemies engage and repel heroes.
4) Repeat steps 2 & 3.
5) Saitama appears and defeats enemy.

I understand that is the entire point of the series but it's a one-note joke and it gets less funny the more you hear it.   The purpose of the series is to show how dull being omnipotent would be and it does a fantastic job of demonstrating it.

You say there's a difference, but I could outline the same pattern for Mob Psycho.

1. Threat emerges and runs rampant until Mob encounters it.
2. If evil spirit, exorcise.
3. If human or psychic, exercise restraint or run.
4. Repeat 2 and 3 until eventually...
5. Mob reaches 100 emotional points and defeats the enemy.

You're saying it like you expect some deeper resolution from shounen/superpower anime. The vast majority have a foregone conclusion along the lines of MC defeats snow and comes out on top. It's just how it is. So what, Mob's struggling a bit while Saitama just deletes them with one punch, you're missing the point if that's all you can see.

The thing with OPM is how it gets there and how everyone reacts to Saitama. Everyone looks at a bald dude with a cape and think he's a joke. The heroes put on airs and belittle him while he doesn't give a snow and helps them anyway. The crowds of people think he's a fraud and turn on him and he still saves them. And as the catalyst, there's Genos who knows and sees what we do and realizes how fortunate mankind is for having Saitama on their side. He himself is changed from being eager to exact justice to putting things into perspective and being more reasonable rather than rash. He puts great faith in his master and wants to improve under him as he realizes his shortcomings. But at the same time Saitama is having issues of his own, internal turmoil from being unable to feel satisfaction from a fight. Each and every encounter is an opportunity for him to find himself and reach a conclusion to his thoughts while also letting us gauge the extent of his power. Story-wise there's a lot of questions to be answered, about the source of Saitama's strength and and how it would eventually shape the hero society, about the connection between him and the increasingly powerful monsters appearing around the ghost town, about what powers exist and how they match to one another, about the #1 hero in the association and also other figures like Garou.

If you can't see these aspects of OPM anymore and if it all boils down to you to that reductionist formula, then why are you still following it, Omega? If it's for the heck of it to then complain how unsatisfying it is, wouldn't you be better off if you stopped reading? I think it's just that simple.

If you're to be honest until the end, was that really out of disinterest or because of the pace at which the chapters were getting out? Because I've been keeping tabs myself and hand months without reading anything.

It was the above-referenced cycle for me.  If pace were an issue, I would have dropped many series.  It bums me out how long some series take to get translated.  I think Wind Up Snail only had 1 release last year, which was a total shame.

On another note, one series I absolutely love these days is Rokudou No Onna-tachi.  It's a fun comedy series about a guy with a magic seal that causes bad women to fall for him.  I also recommend Hoankan Evans No Uso (Sheriff Evan's Lies or whatever it translates too).  It's about a sheriff's misadventures in picking up women.  Lots of fun.

I rewatched ReLIFE in preparation for the final arc episodes that got out last year. I've been meaning to finish what I remembered to be a good story in need of a sequel. It was worth it. Without a doubt one of the best romance/school/slice of life animes I've ever seen. It had me thinking about my own life, my high school days and the point where I'm currently at. The characters were well designed and their interactions believable, I felt empathy all throughout their experiences. And after all that... the ending. To say that it didn't live up to my expectations would be a slight understatement. Despite patching things up nicely for the two main characters, everything else was forgotten. Memories, identity, aspirations for the future, all rendered illusion and cast into oblivion. I rejected it completely. The idea that such a fulfilling year of your life, a high school year where you find friends, where you find a lover and live your youth to the fullest, can disappear, vanish... just like that. I cannot accept it. It makes me wonder if the author somehow wrote himself into a corner and couldn't come to terms with another ending. Maybe the one he chose was already a compromise and the one he had in mind was even more soul-crushing. Ah, reminds me of Kimi no Na wa somehow. Anyway, it was all in all a fantastic anime that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
(Manga had an extra chapter and it's completed, not sure if it's down your alley, Omega. Maybe worth a check?)

EDIT: I intended to write a more harsher review for Tsukimonogatari which I gave a fair chance up until the end where I felt convinced that I must be a masochist, not only for putting up with it but also for picking it up for the third time, but I made sure it was for the last time as well. It seems I have outgrown the monogatari series in all its pretentious dialogue and quirky visuals that just scream for attention. I imagine not all viewership consists of puberty-stricken teenagers getting a rush out of nude bathroom scenes or prolonged sexual tension/innuendo. I can't believe I liked this at some point and was thinking I've been missing out, I have no explanation.
As for the plot, one guy from the comment section raised a lot of valid questions and I felt the same:
Quote:
"The end"? The f... you just killed your classmate. Kagenui literally just sent her doll to kill her classmate and felt nothing bad about it? Even the fourth wall is cracking up real hard with ougi and that Tadatsuru guy (rip). What's going on with the story? Are they really being forced into roles for us? Are we the monsters here? Is that why Oshino left us so that he doesn't get involved or controller by us? Why am I saying us? It could just be Gaen Izuko controlling everything and everyone

EDIT: And then, here I am, frustrated about not coming to terms with things, giving Owarimonogatari a chance, and thinking before the first episode could even finish that it's the best thing ever. I am in disbelief. I've no idea anymore.
Ouikura arc was great, though I'm sad she left the picture so early. I feel there could have been more to tell. And Ougi Oshino is really growing on me, what an odd yet satisfying character. Definitely looking forward to seeing some more tomorrow, most likely even the second season.

EDIT: Indeed, Owarimonogatari was great. I now remember, this feeling is what I've been missing from the series, the same feeling I felt all the way up to Monogatari Second Season. That's why Tsukimonogatari didn't connect, it was an empty story about nothing in the end. But these two arcs were amazing. The closure to Shinobu's story at the end was impressive, by that point I expected no less. I'm glad it delivered.

EDIT: Finished Koyomimonogatari which was next in airing order. It was definitely good. That massive cliffhanger at the end left me wanting to continue right away with the second season of Owarimonogatari, but I can't do that and also keep a schedule. Anyway, I am sure right now that the monogatari series is something I enjoy. It had me thinking about rewatching chronologically. Who knows.

On a side note, if my constant edits are bothersome in the sense that they're always brought up in the last 10 replies section (as it is intentional), please let me know.

EDIT: Alright, I guess nobody cares, which is perfect. Watched the 3 Kizumonogatari movies and man were they fantastic. Throws a ton of detail into what happened on that hellish summer break. I can now better appreciate the nuances between Koyomi and Shinobu as I remember them back when I saw Bakemonogatari. Also Hanekawa, there's a lot to say about her. She's a good supporter, witty and considerate to a certain extent, but her means lack a sense of sincerity. Makes for a stark contrast with Senjougahara who's always overly blunt, can see why the MC chose her instead.

EDIT: And to close things off, Owarimonogatari 2nd Season, which was ****ing amazing. Some would go on to say as close to a masterpiece as it gets. It even made me glad I watched Tsukimonogatari to decipher further meaning. The ending was admittedly a bit predictable but satisfying nonetheless. A slight feeling of disappointment about Ougi Oshino not being her own entity (I was kinda hoping for a twist there), but the rest of her was captivating. Happy to give the monogatari series a 9/10. Would like to see Zoku when it gets web released and hoping for more even after that.
