Bixies best of Shounen Manga

As most of you are aware, I am a Shounen-snow and proud of it. I have always felt a particular enjoyment when it comes to reading about young adventures going off and braving impossible adventures into unknown worlds with extraordinary powers in tow. So, I have decided to compile a  bunch of reviews on different Shounen Manga, which will have much the same scathing ring to it that Yahtzee has to him. However, unlike the hat wearing schizophrenic, I will be taking requests on different Manga if people feel I should review it.

First to come up, the never ending series of unfortunate events for ninjas, Naruto.

When i read the first couple of chapters, i was annoyed that the most irritating prick was going to be its main character. Naruto himself is such a annoying person, even when he grew up in the Shippunden. That whole Dattebyo or "Believe it" in the english dub (which frankly is more annoying) really gets on your tits! and more importantly, how does a ninja who wears an orange jump suit supposed to survive? I wasn't aware of any orange forests in the near area of Konoha.

Thats enough bollocking the main character, however aggrovating he might be, so lets move onto the other characters. A lot of them have really interesting characteristics and quirks, particularly the Sennin, even if they are set up to be older versions of team 7, But some just don't seem to make any sense, like a ninja (whose main point is to kill just one person quietly) who is devoted to a god who claims that he doesn't accept anything below a ritualistic mass massacre of two thousand people (see Hidan), Or a Ninja whose sole movitivation is   to be a bruce lee look alike (Rock lee and Might Gai), Or a Ninja who is a Mother******* cross dresser! (Orochimaru).

The main secondary character who needs a going at, and whom i'm dodging around like a ticking time bomb, is the ever-so emo, unrealistically driven and almost impossibly chast, Sasuke Uchiha. He is such an arrogant and Self-centered little **** that its impossible not to dislike him, and even then, he still gets hundreds of Sasu... fan fiction moments on Deviantart, even with Naruto and his brother (whose was quiet funny "Push your Kuina in harder!")

Also the including of a wimpy twelve year old girl who is often more well endowed than a lot of women isn't looking at a good plan to get it more liked. Its very disturbing when you have moments in the new one when Jiraiya and Naruto are doing "Research" and pick Sakura, to see a fifteen year old girl in what was basically a porn movie. And the fact that they didn't give her any kind of backbone and she relied totally on her team mates for the first part makes you wonder what the writer (Masashi Kishimoto) has against women.

For spectacular abilities, however, Naruto is not lacking. Huge atom-bomb like explosions go off as though they were overstocked on the things, and some of the abilities are particularly cool, like how Orochimaru stores a sword and snake in his gut, or how Kakuzu uses his string, or how Naruto uses the Rasengan. But all these explosions and cool moves somewhat undermine that fact that it is meant to be about Ninjas, who are meant to be Stealthy, and if a normal ninja was armed with these techniques then they would probably destroy a small country.

But this review won't change much, and Naruto is already more popular than god and has a fanbased so rabid that they could turn Naruto into a rapist and Sasuke into a Transexual with both organs and it will still be a best seller. and with all the games, books, Anime, Toys, plushies and costumes, i don't see this series from dying away soon. So take my advice on this one, Look at it for yourself, read it, and make your own decision. hey, you might actually like it, if your an explosion fetish peadophile.

Now there is a manga I got sick of.  After reading some of the recent chapters, I couldn't take it anymore.  The fight between Sasuke and Itachi just became an incredibly tedious read.  I just can't stand the constant gengutsu or whatever it's called.  For example:

A: "I killed you!"
B: "Ha ha!  It was an illusion.  Now you die!"
A: "Ha Ha HA!  Now my death was the illusion."

Do they constantly explain every action they take?  If yes, then your friends are just like Naruto.

A:  "I"m eating a sandwich!"
B:  "I don't get it."
C:  "You see, when a person eats, they use their charka, or energy, that they create within their body to help them chew and swallow."
B:  "Oh! I get it now!"

I must say, that Naruto, for me, is one of the worst Animes I have seen. I have seen a few, and they are just boring. When I was younger, I really liked DBZ (Dragonball Z), and One Piece. Those were enjoyable to watch. Ahh, the good old days

Naruto's done

next: 666 Satan- the offense of all Christians.

666 satan is set on another world were christianity is so powerful that it has every character in the series having an angel or a demon sealed inside them, which makes me think that Seishi Kishimoto is ripping off his brother somewhat. another factor of brotherly sharing of secrets is that the main character, Jio Freed, is almost, if not just as, annoying as Naruto and as brooding as Sasuke, and for the latter he does have an excuse for having Satan sealed inside him.

on First glance, it is a fairly bog standard Manga series, with Girl meeting guy with an abnormally long scarf and a weird split in his hair who wants to be the best and ends up gaining enormous powers to do what he needs. And whilst this might sound a bit boring, the characterization of it makes Jio Freed Likable, or at least bearable, for the entire series. plus the fact that he is Satan often drives him into pervert moments so that can't be not liked, especially as you see his team mate, Ruby mature as well.

As for Ruby, she is very different from Sakura, which probably means that Seishi was the more popular of the two when it came to getting girls. Ruby is fairly powerful in her own right, so doesn't have to live the same parasitic existence as Sakura, and she matures a hell of a lot faster, so near-hentai moments are a lot more frequent, which is very fun to see.

the whole thing about the Puesdo-christian mythos of the series is that it takes it back to the roots of the religion, which is always interesting to read, and it doesn't have a big god coming in and ruining everyones fun. This allows for the reader to know or rediscover a lot more about the sides of heaven and hell than most priests care to teach us.

Ultimately, this is a much better series to read than Naruto, it has wit, charm, and fun. However will probably never make it out of manga into anime, particularly english anime, because of dubbing companies absolute fear of using religious content in their anime for fear of being lobbied against by the religion along with everyone else. so what i'm saying is give it a chance, but i don't blame you for wanting to bring out a flamethrower on it.

Avatar is much better, but Naruto does have some moments.  However, it does get annoying and suffere the BBB syndrom (bigger, better, badder).  Of course it can't compete with the ultimate in BBB Power Rangers (not anime though).  Then again, I am not sure even DBZ (who has horrible BBB) can compete with that.  Oddly the villians of the show are the more interesting.  Then they turn friendly, and get boring...odd.  Some of the abilities did give me the inspiration for Mitsu (an RPG character) though .

666 satan review complete

Next: Fairy Tail- the mage+hentai+abnormally idiotic fest of almost impossible proportions.

Fairy tail is one of those mangas that are all about getting yourself accepted into a group, be it with a bunch of friends, a work place, a house full of insane magicians, and so on. This theme is omnipresent throughout the storyline, with characters randomly yelling out "FOR THE FAIRY TAIL GUILD" at completely inappropriate moments, like buying a horseradish, and its this same simple concept of mage-guild hoolganism that catapults all the characters from point a to point b in the plot.

The storyline follows the adventures of Lucy, a Mage who can summon various spirits with differing personalities and powers through a dimensional portal. Sounds to be a great Shonen manga character, a perfectly ordinary girl who can do extraordinary powers, however its all bookended by the fact that most of the spirits that she summons are either scantily dressed women who will often make all manner of sexual references, like the maid who is constantly being asked to be whipped all the time, or annoyingly perverted men, like the minotaur who only protects Lucy because she has one of the biggest sets of knockers in the entire series.

helping Lucy is Natsu, a fire mage. instead of shooting fireballs, as most people would expect, he combusts parts of his body, creating powerful sucker punches to all major villians. As with all shonen heroes, he has an unstoppable appetite, but this time for fire, and he also gets motion sickness as a running gag. He is shortly followed by his rival, Gray, an ice mage with exhibitionist tendencies, and further swamping deviant art with Gray/lucy moments.

Now, I wouldn't normally criticizes a manga for moments of perversion and hentai, but when it happens as often as in Fairy tail, it gets almost annoying. its balanced out with action, but even in that action, there isn't many moments were some girl's skirt isn't blown up around their ears or some girl's has to explode out of their cloths in order to reappear in some revealing armour. And whilst I admire Mashima Hiro's wonderful drawing of the female form, its gets annoying when he continually shows it off in almost the second panel.

I'm being mean, its a decent manga, especially if you do like looking at the bodies of shonen girls. Its a fun series, which hasn't ended by a long shot. its one of those series in that if the Mangaka can think of more story lines, it can do them, introducing almost unheard of characters to join in. Its a good manga, even if I have been slagging it off for the past four paragraphs.

Naruto...owns...everything...

And the whole explosion and energy thingy is just an exaggerated faith in chakra, I believe that in Ninja legends, a master Shinobi was believed to be able to do such things by using his energy with different signs. I mean, signs are used within the Ninjutsu art, but more in a ritualistic way of course.

the whole explosion thing is countermanding the simple fact that ninjas are meant to be stealthy! on the other hand it was already counteracted by having a ninja in a orange jumpsuit

I hardly think that naruto would have been as successful without all the different flashing and exploding things. The funniest thing about the magna/anime, Imo, is the special attacks. To limit yourself to only stealth-tecniques would be really hard for the author, don't you think? But I can see your point in that it contradicts the vision of the stealthy Ninja.

I have no real explanation for the orange suit however...

Hellsing!- garlic and stake at the ready.

I'm taking a little detour from my usual stick of Shonen manga to review a seinen one, which is alot more mature, but Hellsing is one of the first Manga's I ever read, and I hold it up as a benchmark for Seinen artwork for most to fail to hit. The atmosphere in Hirano Kuota's artwork is mind-bogglingly, mind-explodlingly, cranium cavingly fantastic, there is so much blood and high level action, that you're often left wondering how in hells name he get all that detail in.

there is a lot of blood in Hellsing, so its not for the squemish, but its a book about vampires and the extermination of which can often lead to a bit of a bloody fight. the main character is the iconic trench-wearing, foot long gun tooting, incredibly sadistic vampire, Dracula... sorry i mean Alucard. Alucards job is to babysit his fledgling vampire, casually gun down unsuspecting blood sucking nazi's and occasionally beat up an psychopathic Scottish Vatican priest. other characters include Fledgling Vampire Ceras victoria, who weilds a bazooka as though it was a tommy-gun and makes angelina jolie look like a head-crab from half-life, Alucards boss integra hellsing, who was probably a major influence for feminists, and Alexander Anderson, the phsyco scott Vatican priest with a huge convenient collection of bayonets.

Seinen manga is not my cup of tea, but Hellsing is a sparkling gem in what otherwise is considered a swamp of angst and guts. its witty, its charming, its got well rounded characters, it's got a good grasp of the second world war, vampire legends and british culture, which leads me to think that Hirano Kouta might have spend some time in London. my  advice is to read it, that is if you want so see some annoying Germans, Brits and Catholics get splatted all over tower square by a bohemia nutter with an entire army under his coat.

The only gripe I have with Hellsing is that it takes so long for a chapter to come out.  Over in the states, volume 8 was supposed to be released June 'O4.  It finally came out September of last year if I remember correctly.

You could try reviewing Gantz.  Heck, I'll do it for you.

There's a game people are mysteriously transported to after they die, they fight monsters while wearing black suits, and they die.  New characters are introduced and almost killed instantly.  And that's pretty much Gantz for you.

new review

Bleach- no nasty stains, mess or hollows left, amigo

the Manga Bleach is original in the sense that it tells us unilaterally were we go after we die. This is something new for me, as we don't go to heaven if we've been good, but to a copy of old fuedal japan, just with mobiles and bubblegum, probably telling us that we have wasted our lives on earth. also, to help us on our merry way, there are death god ronin running around with incredibly destructive abilities to kill evil dudes and stamp you to let you in.

For a manga which is entirely devoted to death, there is a suprising lack of it in it. Almost every character seems to get back up through sheer determination and wave their sword blindly at you until there is enough blood to fill a large swimming pool. There is a rather suprising amount of anti-spanish feelings, as almost every hero Shingami has a Japanese name for its sword, and all the bad guys have Spanish. But that could be just reinforcing the view that the Japanese are a bunch of xenophobic dicks (supplied by Ben yathzee, not me).

as for main characters, there are lots, so to put it simply, the main character is a angst-ridden strawberry, his co-worker is a talentless control freak, there is a huge stoic and a bigtited ginger with fairies, a bispectacled archer who continually yells out "FOR THE PRIDE OF THE QUINCY!", a man with a huge snake for a sword with red hair, a male cat who is actually a woman, a huge berserker and his pink haired girlie six-year old sidekick, a bald luck-devoted monk, a fox in a basket, and a man who promotes felatio, and those are the sensible ones!

over all bleach characters, although quirky, fit well in the storyline, but so many pop up you would have though it was time to cut a few down. its about time a few died, but they are so lovable, its difficult to get rid of them. its like a mother of 16 kids being told that she has to kill of three.

over all, i like bleach, despite its cast the size of the east end, death-devoid state and hatred of spaniards, it is well worth a read, especially if you like numerous people destroying buildings, but you could probably get that at an convention for modern art architects.
