I have a problem. I used the tutorial, followed it step by step, but it doesn't work
I took the geometry file of the Ghost, change it in a wrl thanks to mesh2wrl. I turned it into a .obj file that I imported in maya 6.0. I removed the two spectres on both side (in deleting faces, because it doesn't work with vertex), holding only the one of the middle. Then I saved in .mb, and applied your tutorial, using the Global root join (like in the geometry xdb file of the original ghost). Then the log window displayed this when i tried to export, after deleting the skeleton :

It is not necessary to look parametre 'Global root join' in the geometry in *.xdb file of the any original creature as I in example showed that it is necessary to look this parametre in the editor Maya!

P.S. I have specially put the file (source of test creature - DE_LATNIK.MB), execute all that I have written by this sample, but if you do not have positive result then it will be necessary to search for the reason! The map editor it is necessary to reboot after each operation of export so it is more reliable not to spoil result MESH!

Finally, I use the geometru xdb file and I remove the number of material for shapes 1 and 3. Now only the center spectre appears, I don't need new geometry file anymore... But if I need one, I'll send you a mail
