Zombies are useful to shield your Skeleton Archers. They can take a beating and that's what they're meant to do. The alternate upgrade for Demons (the one with Leap) is much more useful.
You actually prefer Skeleton Archers? What about Skeleton Warriors?

Was just talking about the Brawlers. Didn't say that the upgrades were lame.

Quote: As for Ghosts being useless? That's utter rubbish. They're a real pain, back in regular HV Haunted Mines was uber because it allowed you to get large numbers of Ghosts. Ghosts are useful because they can take enemy retaliation which may "miss" (just love it when that happens).
Brawlers are not so hot but the upgrades are effective.
Regarding Thanes, get serious. They are among the best Tier 6 creatures
You got me wrong; I didn't write that Thanes are horrible lvl 6 creatures. I said that they fall too easily, which means their hps are too low IMHO (120 is high, but my Thanes are mostly the first target of enemy melee units). I understand people's excitence about Thunder Thanes, but to make sure: I prefer Flame Lords. Thane's specialities:
Battle ragers are (in my case) dead meat, and Berserkers can got into rage once or twice and then fall. I'm not expirienced in Fortress though, I almost never played them.
As for ghosts/Spectres: I din't like them, as I dispise the whole Necropolis lot for being weak overall. (only vamps and liches are really good, others are mediocre or downright bad), but I have to add that the alternative upgrades saved Necropolis. But when I play Necropolis (I'm playing it's TotE campaign now), I usually let my main hero learn Expert Dark Magic + Mass Confusion and Ghosts, poltergeists and Spectres are obselete. In this campaign Arantir has a basic Spellpower AND knowledge of 14!!! (I don't need ghosts in this case anymore )
In normal games Ghosts (and upg's) always attract a lot of ranged fire, and incorporeality almost always fails at the right time. (It once failed when 10 Archdemons squashed my large stack of Poltergeists, I lost about 110 of them). Ghosts rely too much on this ability, like the H4 Ghost. It is not my cup of tea.

The new alternative upgrades saved Necropolis from being a downright poor town (along with Necromancy of course )

I understand people's excitence about Thunder Thanes, but to make sure: I prefer Flame Lords. Thane's specialities:
In my experience they last very long on the battlefield. For example: not too long ago I had a battle while playing dwarves against an AI necromancer. I used Rune of Dragonform and just sent my Thanes in the middle of their army and attacked a stack of 5 or 6 Cyclopses. I killed 1 or 2 them (4 remained) and they had a lucky retaliation, so I went "oh ****!" *Cyclops retaliates*... but not even a single Thunder Thane died. After going "WTF o_O" I check the combat log and it appears that the 4 cyclopses did only 122 damage on their lucky retaliation. I check the Thanes' stats and it appears that their defence was boosted to 65 by the Rune of Dragonform. This combined with expert defense made them nearly invulnerable to physical attack. For the remaining round they got attacked by the necros' complete army but still I lost only 2 total. Now I know that necromancers aren't too good in the might department and that the AI sucks but still I think it's a good example of how extremely hard they can be to get rid of.

it seems they didn't change much things apart from the lich master and the skeleton warrior (and I guess the nosferatu may have some good potential)
what's funny is an executionner is probably harder to kill than a pao kai.
