I think Academy's strenght (and weakness)comes from the fact that they are truly versitale and can be used in various situations. The curse of 2%-s hinders them a lot, like lacking leadership+logistics, but they can overcome this "defect" by they huge mam and conjuring abilities, not to mention being able to learn every spell school effectively.Creeping is a breeze with them,if used with proper formation and/or turtling, the only thing is that in midgame you must mind ur resources because if you get stuck(=bankrupt)you miss valuable turns where u could advance.
I dissagree with each and everyone who is saying Academy is the hardest faction, its a matter of practice, thats all.Yeah, you should love magis factions!

The most cruel faction to play with early on is inferno obviously, with them, one wrong move and ure done....things get better for them midgame-if not then its because of the lack of Sulfur....
Speaking of sulfur-dwarves go equally bad like them in earlygame, though not getting any better midgame either...they just stall till like level 15+ and runes lvl5 and lava dragons...then they are extremely hard to kill-maybe even impossible depending on player, especially in their town. But caught anywhere, anytime before that, they are toast.Like their Thunder thanes though...
An entirely different story now...HAVEN-why are they sooo hung up on coins and ore????they make me soo mad-cant advance in building their city till my hero is a legend having like 2 archers and  a priest left because the opposing hero had his town completed and didnt even build the cavalier building yet......looks like im too magicky to play them...their creatures are lovable but their hero is not much help without exp.light magic and before lvl20,and their expenditures...?huh

ZEHIR DID SURVIVE?!YAY!!!!
BUT THAT MEANS>>>>THAT AIR ELEMENTAL IS RUSHING TO ME!?

Inferno because they have no shooter in the beggining and they have potentially very difficult creeping because of this. Resource requirements do not help either, i.e much wood to upgrade level 3 and very much mercury and sulfur needed.

I think playing inferno when you really want to win against a good opponent is very risky option.

Of course Inferno without Deleb which needs patching.

For me:
Inferno without Deleb or access to early war machines.
or
Dwarfs with nasty neutrals guarding important mines (bears acting after mages/arcanes/druids/etc or simply losing to many of Ingvars little helpers).

I actually like both armies, but you can get off to rough starts more-so than other races at least the way I use them.

Most fraught with danger:
Inferno minus war machines
and
Warlock - my stalker abuse is OK, but winning critical fights with low mana clearly isn't a strong point for me.

With those two armies, I can occasionally go to hard too early and take unacceptable early losses.

I said Inferno, due to their lack of shooters. Other than that, I could live with them.

Well if Deleb wasnt born then i'd say inferno is hardest. But with her its possible to advance competitive with any other faction and... actualy at lvl 6-7 i can handle nearly any creeps on my way to mines with first weeks army (50 imps, few demons, 7 dogs, and 5 sucubuss.

So i chose fortres. It has pathetic starting units and i am always having losses. And i hate losses.

In my experience, the most difficult faction to play is relative. Everyone have a different play style and one faction will be easier to play and another harder. For me necropolis and dungeon is the most easy factions to play. And i have problems to play with haven.

Talking hard dif here

Fortress are hardes for me - bad creeping week2 when you must get Dragons ot at least Thanes, but you only have low lvl shooter, not a great mage/shooter and not great mele force. After the Dragons/Thanes - it's easy.

Some times i have problem with Stronghold - specialy without Haggash (the centaur comander).

Inferno has gating, has jumping demons and most of the time has nightmares week 1, so i like them better.

I don't really like Haven and Sylvan - but they are well suited with archers.
I like the other 3 towns best, Necropolis being n1 for me. Easy converting of DE points into money-free troops is a winner No other race could have 2 lvl6 units week1 (Necro could beat a pack of Djinns week1)

I agree with you. Necropolis is great early game. I managed to kill 2 bone dragons, 4 wraits and some low-level troops week one with just skeleton warriors, zombies and vampires. Mass slow, suffering and vulnerability is just awesome!

I played a lot with academy and loved them. They are so effective since early game. The access to archmages week 1 is just awesome! These units not only has a great fire power but still reduce the cost of spells for heroes (with great knowledge means infinite mana).

At day 3 of week 2 I have all the ressources mines and killed all the creeps around my city. Only with necropolis I manage to do the same.
