you lose the equivalent of 8 pawns and your opponent loses 6. Not a good trade

The way I rate the pieces:

Knight = 3 pawns
Bishop = 3 pawns
Rook = 5 pawns
Queen = 9 pawns

Sometimes it is, it depends on the situation

But in general it's not a good trade, I agree

Excellent.

OK, the explanation, perhaps needed for others.

Note that the black bishop has a discovered check wherever the knight moves. But here we need double-check. Otherwise the white knight could capture our bishop, with his own check. But if you deliver 2 checks at the same time, the king must get out of both. (as if you take one of the attackers, the other will still be checking the king, so every capture moves are illegal)

King to a1-only move.

And now the queen can deliver mate.

Nice work. Will post another soon.

The next problem is based on a very famous endgame position. The main objectve for white of course, is to promote its pawn and win. But how? If the rook moves, black will devour the pawn. This is a special type of pin. Black is pinning your rook. How do you break this pin? White to move and achieve a winning position.

Too easy. 1.Rh8! Rb7* 2.Rh7+ K~ 3.Rb7*, white has a extra rook and easily wins. If black rook try to check white king, he just diagonally, moves next to him and chases away, example: 1. ... Rb2+ 2.Kf3 Bb3+ 3.Ke4 Bb4+ 4.Kd5 Bb5+ 5.Kc6 and black rook must run away. If black moves with king, or ~, white do 2.b8Q an with extra queen wins, if black try 2. ... Rb8*, then 3.Rb8* and white still left with a rook. It's very typical position,  in this situation black (if they could move) will go 1. ... Kg7 and force a draw .

Why black has to eat the pawn? He could move the king: f7-g7 and then White is screwed (will lose the pawn)

I'll say that White has to move the king... it won't be a short answer

Yeah but then White will promote the pawn into a Queen, Black will be forced to take the Queen, and White will take Black's Rook

But Black can still check the white king instead...

Hmm, it seems it's the same "loss" after all

Quote:

I don't think checking the white king solves anything though

And there IS possible to deliver a mate with only one rook.

Example:

8 - - - - - - - k
7 - - - R - - - -
6 - - - - - - K -
5 - - - - - - - -
4 - - - - - - - -
3 - - - - - - - -
2 - - - - - - - -
1 - - - - - - - -
  A B C D E F G H

It's white's turn and he does a d7-d8# move

R - White Rook
K - White King
k - Black King

well each disc added to RAID 0 speeds up things, so the more you have, the faster they work

As for the recent puzzle: Since I know the answer (It's covered in one of the chess books I have), I won't participate

Right now .

(I had some problems with my net again, but it's now fixed.)

A simple one to re-warm-up you all
Black to move. We need a fork. Study the whole board.

Good to know , my answer: 1. ... Qa5+ 2.K~(Nd2, c3, Rc3, Qd2, white must defend a king) Qh5* black wins a knight. If 2.Qc3! (tricky), then 2. ... Bb4 and 3. ... Bc3* black wins a queen for a bishop (white queen can't run away, because this will open a check for white king in e1). Also black can't after 2.Qc3 go 2. ... Qh5*, because 3.Qg7* and white wins .
King in the centre means problems (often), so try O-O or O-O-O to do early.

White won't play Qc3 he's not silly

But the first idea is good! Queen to a5 check, and after the king moves, black grabs the unprotected knight on the opposite side of the board.

This could have been a bit difficult as you needed to examine the entire setup. Nice work!
