new nvidia graphic cards = slow game?

Hey guys, I searched everywhere(on internet) for my problem and finally found this place. I hope that you can help me. Yea right the problem is:

Recently I installed heroes of might and magic IV and its 2 expansions (winds of war, gathering storm). I run the game, open a scenario map(or a campaign) everything is good for 1-2 turns. But after that game slows down so much that I can't play. I discovered that, when I return to the windows and return to the game it gets normal but after 1-2 turns the game slows down again. I tried my brother's computer too. But the same thing occured his graphic card is 9600gt and mine is gt240m(slightly better) both nvidia. And finally I tried my father's computer and everything was smooth. I couldn't observe any type of slowing down. That narrows the search for a solution I guess. By the way all there computers mentioned here are laptops.

Mine: i7, gt240m, 4gb...
Bro's: p8400, 9600gt, 3gb...
Dad's: i5, hd5650, 4gb...

Thanks for your time.

I'm not a tech wiz, but how does the hd5650 compare to the other two graphic cards? And have you checked for drivers for your graphic card? To my experience, most of these issues occur when driver is not fully up-to-date (albeit with a game as old as H4, chances for this to be a problem is less likely I suppose). You can always go to the GC producer homepage and download the most recent driver to make sure you're fully up to date.

Actually I compare them according to

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-240M.17654.0.html

(see the list at right side of the page)And yes my drivers are very up to date. And yes I posted a similar topic at Nvidia forums. I hope that somebody knows the answer.

I have the same problem. After 1-2 turns the game start to lag A LOT!!! There is no real solution to this but I tried VirtualBox. This program allows to have a virtual computer IN your computer so I installed Windows XP on the Virtual machine and Heroes IV is running just fine now.

But it is stupid to have all this trouble only to play one of the games.

Btw Heroes II is running perfect in my Vista.

PS: Sorry for bad English.

Whenever i press the exe file, it goes bluescreen..
Is that because i have Windows Vista? or is it something else?
Have you tried running it in Compatibility Mode? Is it patched to the latest version?..

Quote:
I guess Heroes IV app slowness in Windows 7 is caused by the same issue MS Powerpoint 2003 has in article here.
Awesome post and links, tnx!

Hello everyone, i have Heroes 4 for mac. Unfortunally my disk two is a bit scratched and will not copy everything to allow me to finish the installation and play the game. Can someone give me some ideas or someone located in NY so i dont have to buy the entire game again?
Try to find a torrent to download? ;D

Probably you copied a NoCD .exe over the original file (I usually ZIP the originals for every game and just keep them in the game folder)?.. Or maybe the patch is for the wrong version? You can reinstall to update.

ps.

I have tried everything under the compatibility option for the shortcut. Under the game options I have also made sure the 1280x1024 and full screen options are checked. I've tried unchecking full screen just to see as well as the other resolutions which have made no difference.
For anyone with widescreen issues, you can run the original game windowed 1024x768 using Windows 7 Compatibility Mode, just not @ the highest res. (a part of the main screen interface will remain hidden @ this resolution); haven't installed the expansions right now 2 try the same.

Where do I store downloaded maps?

I tried extracting downloaded campaigns (WoW) and maps into the maps folder under Heroes IV but the access was denied.

This sounds more like a permissions issue with windows 7. Using windows 7 are we? If you go into program files (x86) where the hereoes installation is, right click on that folder, chose Properties from the pop up box, then click the Edit button and you'll be prompted with a security warning. Tell it yes to continue. Click the Add button and add your account with full permissions. You could just add "everyone" if you wanted since there most likely, in your case, no security reason not to (assuming this is your own home computer that you're not taking into public places all the time). Make sure to give yourself "Full Control". That will allow you to place files into the game directory.

Actually I'm using Windows Vista.  The folder in program (x86) is called 3DO.  I tried giving myself full permission and then applying but it doesn't seem to work.

Edit:  Never mind, I got it working.  Thanks.

Vista would have been the same process I'm pretty certain since the two (vista and 7) are identical in the security architecture (mostly).

Glad it worked out for ya.

PS: I still stand firm that Heroes IV is the best in the series! <dodges the incoming vegetables thrown his way>.

I actually ended up using my admin account to change the settings.

Anyways, I agree completely that Heroes IV is the best in the series.  If only the AI wasn't completely stupid...haha, but multiplayer is AMAZING.  Hotseat with friends is intense.

Hey

I was wondering about a stupid thing, really. I'm sorry if this is already discussed somewhere. I was just wondering if it's possible somehow to make the duration of the computer's turn shorter? Is it normal that in large 6 player maps it takes more than half a minute when I don't even see my opponents?
I am using HoMM4 with WoW expansion. Truth be told, the computer is old (Pentium 4 1.8GHz 768 MB RAM) but there haven't been any reasonable problems playing any games before.
Thanks in advance.

You're computer is more than sufficient for the game and, in fact, that's a pretty good computer.

When playing with that many computer opponents, you're going to get stuck with long turns whether you like it or not and regardless of computer speed (I'm pretty sure anyway). Just make sure that the movement speed of the computer players is set to the fastest possible setting so they don't mozy along. Other than that, I don't think there's much you can do about it. I'm going to try playing a large game with as many computer players as I can and see how long the turns take me on my system (quad core hyber threading 2.66 GHz with 6 GB of ram (so 8 procs show up in device mgr but that doesn't matter really anyway since H4 wasn't developed to take advantage of multi proc systems)). I'll let you know if the turns seem really fast but I'm thinking there's still going to be some time going by. It seems the computer has to think more too as time goes on since more decisions have to be made as the game progresses (I think anyway).

Hello there, guys. I downloaded Equilibris mainly to check out Death without the demons but they didn't get replaced in the town. I can't access the summoning menu and I guess the same is true for necromancery. Other changes, however, are present (Ogre magi have new spells, etc). Should I download something else? Is there a different version of the mod?

I've never used it myself but my first question now a days is what OS are you using; Win7? Vista? I'm finding that a lot of older stuff has some severe issues installing and/or running and older mods for older games would probably be even more problematic. But, that's just a guess. Someone here has to know the answer for you otherwise, right people?

Someone previously had this to say about Equilibris in case you didn't see it (page 3 on this discussion).

I had a problem at first with Equilibris but once I downloaded the exe file for WoW it installed fine...I hope!

Multiplayer - Allies

Hi, I just installed HMM4 on my computer. I'd really like to play Hot Seat multiplayer in Allies mode, just like it was possible in HMM3. I can't seem to find how to get this to work. Is it even possible? Do I require a patch for the game? I've noticed the multiplayer option is not avaible at all. All I can do right now is start a new scenario with 2 human players and agree we don't attack each other, which is quite lame. Any help is greatly appriciated!

Multiplayer was added with patch v2.0 (in v1.0, v1.2 or v1.3 it was 'Coming soon'). The latest version of the game - v3.0. If you don't want to bother with patches - simply install 'Gathering Storm' and then 'Winds of War' expansion packs over your Heroes IV installation.

Thank you very much for this clear information! I will try to get these expansions. Great!
