| ...Now this one's made me mad.  Who the hell does he think he is using my own words against me?  Sarcasm aside, I'll still choke him when I meet him for knocking my feud with Hudson and Wolfman.
Call me arrogant if you want.  But if I'm laughing while I'm reading my own writing, if I'm entertained by it, then I'm gonna stick my head out there and say a lot of other people are entertained by it.

Call my observation a feeling of mood more than a willingness to call out individuals by name.  If they feel incensed by what I'm saying, if they think I'm referring to them, they're probably right.

Pan raises the excellent point that everything is so freaking dry.  Where is the joy?  Where is the passion for a topic besides a nasally, "You said this and I disagree!!  Nyuh-uh!  I didn't say that!  You're making stuff up!!  Yes you did say that!  No I didn't!!  Yes you did!!"

Seriously, is the high point of my OSM day going to be Emilsn's Second Base Tales?

Not that I'm knocking it, mind you.  I'm actually looking forward to it.  Wtf Emil, where's our update?

Perhaps you don't understand the fun of a good engaging argument. I'm surprised - you had plenty of them in the past. But now you just pop in, make a few (admittedly high-quality) posts, say something about "the kids these days", and then disappear for months at a time.

But you definitely have a point.

| Now, that's being a bit unfair. There haven't been any quote wars in a while. Just regular debates. Back in the days of quote wars, I wished for these kinds of debates. So it's a major improvement.
As for the good arguments - are all participants enjoying it? (Because, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it, right?) So what's the problem? Newcomers aren't attracted to it?

Perhaps we need to have some kind of debating guild.

| My impression is, that basically only a handful of people is interested in DISCUSSION. The rest may have in interest in tossing their opinion around, but lack interest, time, energy, knowledge and so on to really delve into stuff. Look at the Big Bang thread, for example. Skyrocketing post count as long as at was just about tossing a quick opinion into the mire, but the thread went dead IMMEDIATELY after threatening to discuss things with a more fact-based background.
 Clear indication.
My impression is that you can fool around enough in the Tavern and on the VW already or am I wrong?
But there should be a forum as well where opinion-tossing might be called. Being able to back up an opinion by solid reason ain't that bad a skill generally, so I wonder what this discussion really is about.

On another note, I'm pretty sure that COMPARATIVE "insults" are legally ALLOWED:
"You ARE an idiot" is an insult.
"You behave LIKE an idiot" is NOT.

I fail to see how helpful insults are to any discussion. No matter how you pack them up.

Insults needs the intention to insult, otherwise it's just an accidentially unlucky phrasing.
If your assumptions are perfectly legal indeed - let's say, your mom dresses rather provocative, visits dingy and doubtful establishments regularly, has a vocabulary like a sailor und can be seen flirting heavily with all kinds of men, yes, I would be allowed to say that your mom in my humble opinion behaves like a prostitute. To be able to say your mom IS a prostitute I'd have to prove that she's taking money for certain services from more than one man.

Now, obviously you cannot make a comparative statement when there is nothing to compare. If MOM isn't anywhere mentioned here, any sudden comparative mention of MOM would OF COURSE be an insult. Third person insultig, actually.

The gist here is, if I say, you behave like an idiot, then it's a special claim for a special occasion, usually followed by a reason why, and implies that you are an ok person, but just not at this special occasion. If you say, you ARE and idiot, then it's unsubstantial generalizing.

For example, if someone would claim the same silly thing over and over and over again he behaves like an idiot. But he IS no idiot, or, more correctly, you cannot conclude that from just that one thing.

| Nah. I think it's just a matter of language. You know, in German at least, "leg peeing" is actually part of the language. "To pee at someone's leg" means generally harrassing someone or crossing someone in a slightly dubious way. It's used mostly in connection with "try", so if you say, X is trying to pee at my leg" it means that X is trying to cross you in a way that shows a bad character.
We aren't that personal here. I think.

| Well I haven't had an issue with anyone accusing another of peeing on them... yet - but there have been a lot of times when people do go overboard insulting another person's intelligence, and especially in insulting their lifestyle and belief system.
Sometimes you need to remember that there are very young people here - and while you might think that its obvious that you're "playing around", they will take you quite literally.

Also, trying to cleverly disguise an insult, doesn't make it less of one - plus it insults our intelligence when you try to say it was meant innocently... Insults all around

In any case, I'm more concerned with the foul language policy as of late, I'd really appreciate it JJ (and all else who don't censor)  if you could use ****s in your posts rather than decide its unnecessary. Or better still, express yourself without the cussing. period.

| I'm not in the habit to cuss in posts and PMs to people I don't know face to face.
For insults, my opinion is that the majority of people is just too touchy. Look at team sports. In the heat of the moment - of the fight, you might say - they tell themselves a lot of really bad stuff, but after the game they shake hands and that's it. They know that when the blood is up words have the tendency to fly fast and without much thought. Same thing when delicate issues are debated.
You can't consider all sensibilities when making a statement, for example about religion, and if someone feels offended by it it makes no sense to draw circles around it.

| Lowering their standards? As in, lower than we are? Ok, let me rewrite that "Spectre is haunting HC" thread in a fascist manner...
Seriously, the last time I checked you didn't need to go through some kind of a test in order to post in the OSM. Except tests of patience, of course. And if there was such a test, I'd love to see how some of the current regular OSM posters would pass.

Introduce elitism into the OSM and in a month or two it'll be either empty or filled with one or two snobs. And I thought the idea is to change it for the better.

More posters (as in, "more than four") could only help the place IMO. And if things get too childish (like in some points of the Gaza thread), that's why God created Pan and Angelito.
