We will never have a film where godzilla is going on a rampage and we just see Japanese scientists loudly yelling and panicking behind their computer monitors in some bunker. Hollywood requires a human element. You can't say no to hollywood.

I'm not suggesting to remove the human element, I'm expecting the human element to be something more than a few cliches. And Hollywood, every once in a while, manages to do that. That's when you DON'T call the movie typically Hollywood, though.

I remember Shadow of Vampire, it felt eccentric rather than heavy to me and it's a very good idea to watch it right after the original Nosferatu movie. For those of you who hasn't seen it, it is a movie about the making of the movie Nosferatu, in an alternative reality where the monster is real, not an act. Not your typical vampire movie for sure. Btw, DG, if you are into old horror films watch the 3 episode BBC documentary "A History of Horror". It gives tips on great films and tells the story of horror movies in quite an informative way. It's not just information flow either, how did the formulas developed, what did they represent, political subtexts etc etc... (I should add it to the Documentary Thread some time.)

Talking about movies about the making of a movie, White Hunter Black Heart is one of the best Clint Eastwood movies I've ever seen, so underrated... It's inspired by John Huston shooting the African Queen in.. well, Africa obviously and tells the story of a director's obsession about going on an elephant hunt.

I know, artu. I was dreaming of a godzilla movie with what I just described. (In a truly just world we could see a godzilla film with nary a human element is what I'm saying.)

And thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a gander, definitely. And the excentricty of it all made it feel surreal and that is probably what I felt as heavy at the time. But I am more sensitive to these things, I think.

I found American Psycho an extremely heavy film to watch as well, for instance and I have some weird friends who keep quoting it as this immensely funny picture. I found it shocking, maaybe a bit funny, but more like you're laughing, because it's so uncomfortable.

I think Shadow of the Vampire isn't heavy per se, but it blew away my expectations, just like the original nosferatu did (there is so much more gratuitous murder than I expected there to be and it doesn't stop.)

They're definitely interesting films and shadow of the vampire is so much better (or more interesting) in light of having seen the film it is based on.

The Two Faces of January was an interesting movie. Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, it starts with an American swindler accidentally killing a detective who's after him in 1962 Athens. A tour guide ends up helping him and his wife try to get away, things start to get complicated, also the finale was in Istanbul. (I had no idea about it and was a funny surprise, one of the few movies where they did the accents right.)

The cinematography wasn't grandiose but very picturesque. Historical details were well done and Patricia Highsmith novels always bring out good films (Ripley movies, Strangers on a Train). I remember reading she considered Dostoyevsky and Kafka as her mentors and you can clearly see that introverted dark psychology motifs all the time.

Don't get used to it.  They're going to most likely kill off a good chunk of the cast in the next film given its alleged disaster film focus.  Don't worry.  I'm sure ol' Tubes will magically survive like he always does.

even if they do, they will still have made one gem of a movie. i don't go into movies expecting much, anyway. i read some of the reviews for xmdofp, and they were overwhelmingly positive. i wasn't even going to watch the movie, i had already forgotten about it(figuring it was going to be another barely watchable movie); but after reading how positive the reviews were, i decided to take a look. i was much more than pleasantly surprised. that movie is by far one of the best comic book movies ever made(and probably will be up there with the top 5 until the end of time, to say the least). and it'll always have that under it's belt.

A Million Ways to Die in the West was not the best comedy but it had its moments. I think the problem with Seth MacFarlane is, his comedy is fit for a darker, sharper approach, while he prefers basically to stick to the main Hollywood formulas and stereotypes regarding the storyline. He could have been great if he was working in the 63-73 Era or sometime similarly more political and innovative. Don't get me wrong, I don't think every comedian should be a misfit. Robin Williams, for example, was a good comedian and very mainstream. But he was naturally mainstream. Macfarlane, on the other hand, feels like a renegade rebel, a somehow nerfed version of himself. Still, if you're looking for a light-comedy, it's worth a download.

Saw the wolf of wall street yesterday. I laughed my ass off. While not strictly a comedy, it does the unexpected amazing job of showing how much of a good time these con men were having. I was told this before I saw the movie and I still didn't expect them to have that much. It's infectious is what it is. Anyway I find it a compelling film that is hugely entertaining.
