There are so many great foreign films. I'll add that one to Netflix. Sometimes I'm wary of the Chinese martial arts films - they can be overly stylized, almost cartoonish at times. But if you recommend it...

(EDIT: Sorry to the non-Americans when I use the word "foreign". I should say non-American films. Ah, well. I love it when Hollywood takes a perfectly good non-American film and remakes it into dreck for American audiences.)

Man of nowhere is a good movie, but there are far better Korean ones.

Watch these:

Memories of Murder *
The Chaser *
Joint Security Area *
Vengeance trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr / Mrs Vengeance)
Mother
Bittersweet Life
The Yellow Sea

*highly recommended

Another great foreign film is 13 Assassins.

It is a period drama about 13 assassins employed to stop a madman from taking a position in the Shogun's court.  The first half of the film is a little slow and the last half is just action.  I loved every bit of it and easily recommend it.

As to Journey to the West, be forewarned that it does have a few cartoonish moments like all Stephen Chow movies.  I still highly recommend it.

just watched godzilla.

1st mistake they made: soundtrack. garbage.

the rest of the mistakes? all of your typical hollywood garbage.

godzilla is a misunderstood creature, who is actually a superhero who fights other giant creatures to restore a delicate natural balance for the entire world? yeah. right.

those other creatures poked so many holes in godzilla, that he should've been dead. one. godzilla had a building bigger than him(how the **** was that even possible?) collapse on him. two.

then after he wriggles out from under the apparently massive building that could blot out half of the horizon, kills the momma roach, and takes a brief nap(or plays possum, in order to recuperate from the multiple fatalities he faced battling radiation-eating giant cockroaches), he gets up, unscathed? not to mention, his power move apparently doesn't do much against those giant cockroaches, unless he gives them mouth-to-mouth with it?

maybe he should've given them ass-to-mouth. might've been more effective.

i was SO hoping they wouldn't **** up another godzilla movie. why couldn't they take the hint from "cloverfield", and completely remove a soundtrack/soundtrack effects(godzilla does something... "dun dun dunnnn". godzilla looks compassionately into wannabe ra's al ghul's eyes... "dun dahhhhh".)

rabid monkeys. teleported into those responsible's intestines. now. they took something great, and made it ****. AGAIN. **** you, hollywood.

even bryan cranston's acting couldn't save this movie. wtf. just wtf.

btw, godzilla, lose some ****ing weight. you looked like sally struthers from "south park". mecha-streisand was fit, by comparison.

Watched X-Men: Days of Future Past. a bit better than what I've expected from a piece of franchise crap belched out by Marvel.

quite enjoyable, but some characters didn't got enough screentime in my opinion.

Also saw Maleficent. Pretty nice take on a classic fairy tale, big thumbs up to the guys who did Jolie's makeup. really cool.

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy last Friday. The story is as complex as an amoeba and the characters have the personality of a brick (combined) but it was fun in a mindless, relaxing way. Certainly more than I would expect from Marvel which usually settle with the mindless bit only. I'd even recommend it.

Have you ever seen a Godzilla film?  It sounds like your expectations were too unrealistic.  You should have known better than to expect the movie to be another Cloverfield.

When Godzilla is not depicted as a destroyer, he is often depicted as a force of nature that does not play well with other monsters.

As to how much damage Godzilla took in the film, that's nothing compared to the beatings he took in other films, notably Final Wars. Godzilla needs to lose weight?  Did he look unrealistic for a 300' fire breathing dragon monster?

As to the atomic breath hurting the monsters, it was explicitly stated in the film the female MUTO had incredible dense armor and that it was protected from most exterior attacks.  It made sense that he would vaporize the creature through the mouth.

The corny soundtrack has been a part of every Godzilla movie and its omission would further stray from the franchise.

As to Bryan Cranston's acting not being able to save the film, nobody's acting could have saved it.  The movies aren't about the humans acting.  The humans don't matter.  All that matters is seeing two giant monsters beat the Hell out of each other.

lol, did i hit a nerve or something? you think that because all previous godzilla movies were crap, that my expectations for a great one shouldn't manifest? all previous godzilla movies were b-movie-ish. the latest one, before this new one, they tried harder. they tried still harder in this newest one, and STILL failed by a huge margin.

no, my expectations will not lower due to hollywood's ****. and btw, before you get all cranky again, much of that post was meant to be humorous. i still laugh when i read it, even though i take my monster movies seriously. if i wanted to watch b-movie monster movies, i'd watch "eight-legged freaks", or "tarantula". because b movies are supposed to suck. something that was an attempt to be serious, ISN'T.

all that said, maybe they tried to please both genre's of movie goers. it kinda makes sense, based on what i've seen. problem is, it's very, very hard to make a monster movie that is both grade A, AND grade B. so maybe it was the moviemakers who set the bar too high themselves?

It really was a mess. The main problem was they advertised it like this film will try to take a more serious and DARKER approach and it was all your cliche Hollywood plot of "I have to save my family" once again. Pushing the notion of Godzilla as an anti-hero too far was also a bad idea, indeed.

We will never have a film where godzilla is going on a rampage and we just see Japanese scientists loudly yelling and panicking behind their computer monitors in some bunker. Hollywood requires a human element. You can't say no to hollywood. Luckily Guillermo del Toro supposedly got hold of the sequel, so maybe something good can eventually surface from this.

EDIT: Cloverfield has recived a lot of critical panning over the years. I'm of the opinion I liked it, but I was an impressionable young man, back then.

EDIT2: I watched a lot of vampire films recently, because the person I watch films with was tired of watching the tree of life and arnie films with me. So we've watched:

NOSFERATU: EIN SYMFONIE DES GRAUENS (1922) by F.W. Murnau
It's that film with this guy in it. It was okay for a silent film that's been largely reconstructed. I found it a bit tiresome, but it was pretty cool and gave me some insight in how old movies were done, before there was speaking in it.

That was followed by us watching "shadow of the vampire" (2000). That film had great acting chops. It had Cary Elwes, John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. Willem Dafoe with tons of make-up on looked less intimidating than he does in American Psycho, so that's something at least. Otherwise, a heavy film.

A bit lighter was "Dracula" (1931) with Bela Lugosi in the main role as Dracula. It was an interesting film, especially compared with its 9 year old predecessor. Bela Lugosi really is the father of the joke that vampires represent our subconscious desire to be sexually harassed by a European. Whereas nosferatu is very monstrous, dracula is very suave. There's something eery about him, but he's still charming regardless.

Let the right one in ("Lat den retta komma" in or something in Swedish) was pretty cool. A vampire film as much as it's a low budget film about being bullied as a kid or about being lonely and Swedish. Vampires could be replaced by drugs or something in this film, but it works and I like it a lot. I can heartily recommend it. Not to be confused with the american "let me in." I didn't see that one.

We didn't see 30 days of night again, but we saw that a year ago and let me just say it's literally the most boring film I've ever watched and I've watch tree of life and stalker (and liked both, actually, slow-paced as they may be). Let me repeat: the worst vampire film ever made is 30 days of night and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone to see that film. Maybe even the worst film ever made period! At least Manus: the hand sof fate was so bad, it may actually be somewhat enjoyable when you've imbibed some alcohol.

Next thing I will watch with my friend will probably be that one film where Nicholas Cage thinks he's a vampire.

i honestly don't see a sequel being any better. next, they'll try to dig up some of the older godzilla monsters. that's what i expect, anyway. it'll end up being godzilla vs. the power ranger monsters.

personally, i'd like to see some of the monsters from "in the mouth of madness" back on the big screen. some elder gods, or something else equally vile. end of days, with cthulhu and his minions vying for control amongst all the other gods from dark spaces/below worlds, etc.

and in the end, one of those monster deities and it's minions/offspring take over the world. humanity is wiped out, or converted into monstrous slaves.

it would build up to a great sequel. take the humanity out of humanity, and bring the true monsters to life. in the 3rd movie, a choice few humans who were able to escape earth, must use the necronomicon, in order to bind the monsters back into the darkness. and, they fail horribly, and subsequently are the last remaining humans to be wiped the **** off of any remaining planets/galaxy. i want to see world-wide, galaxy-wide genocide on-screen.

they could make three movies out of it. the 2nd one could leave the movie crowd going "wtf is going on?", due to the near total lack of human dialogue. that'll weed out the non-hackers.

sadly, no one would make a movie that is so far from the audience, that it would fail to sell to the masses.

it'd end up being my favorite 3 movies, though. as long as they didn't try to cater to the dumb masses. or worse, the dumb american masses(where the good guys almost always win/guy always gets girl/human beings overcome insurmountable odds as a race, etc).
