Yeah it is. But I have high expectations for this third part - as IIRC the trilogy goes from light to heavier themes, as in preparation to the LotR trilogy. Here's Jacksons quote _
-"We always saw The Hobbit more in the golden light of a fairytale. It's more playful. But by the time you get to the end, Tolkien is writing himself into that place where he can begin that epic journey of writing LOTR, which took, as he put it, his life's blood. All those heavier, darker themes which are so prevalent in the later trilogy start to come into play."

God, you guys are such whiners!
Without movies like Hobbit, I would be bored to death. It's the best thing to happen fantasy-wise after the LotR trilogy. And it's a no-brainer that nothing will ever beat that trilogy, because the sheer shocks of filming and "unfilmable" movie was enough to make it and insta-classic. So what if Hobbit movies have some cliche elements, or old tricks and flicks. They are still so much better then the rest of the crap we're getting...
So just shut up and enjoy those movies...

Here's some visual-art history.
Before all the visual effects of computers were put into the hands of most anyone with the cash, I think there were some amazing processes created before-hand.
Claymation is now an outdated mode of story-telling but to me it is still an amazing effort to watch; if it's done well. Just like Disney took general cartoon animation to new heights of invention; Will Vinton did the same in his working with Clay.
"Especially when you watch the face of Rip" = A picture, then a slight movement of the clay and then another pic...on and on for 20+ minutes of film. Vinson is amazing here. Btw, He later did the California Raisins of ad-fame.

I had a younger friend that had the nickname. I had no clue but maybe you'd been in the know. 
The first clay stuff I saw was Davey and Goliath iirc. Pretty horrible stuff but Shaun the sheep and Wallace and Gromit had to start somewhere I guess.
Btw find Buzz Box 1985. I never would have guessed clay could have captured my dislike of the media so well.

I watched The Counselor last night. Terrible, terrible movie. The only interesting part was the motorized garrote used to kill one of the main characters. Youtube that two minute scene and skip the rest.
Ridley Scott needs to seriously hire some better script writers for his movies. You'd think Cormac McCarthy would be up to the challenge, but I guess not.

+1. Most of the movie you have no idea why anybody is doing what they are doing and half the time you can't even be sure who they are exactly either. The acting and the production values were good and people seemed motivated by their work though, and most people in it usually take place in quality stuff. My guess is, the director had some original, interesting vision but the studio butchered the movie to squeeze it into some 120 minute format. There's no way something that confusing can be what Ridley Scott intended.
It was the same with Once Upon A Time in America and Sergio Leone. Before the real, long version came out, people who saw the 80's TV version were like "really Sergio, what the hell is this mess!"

Yeah, it was really confusing. Long, drawn out conversations about nothing in particular, but few scenes actually showing what the hell was going on. Even now I still am not sure exactly what the drug deal was that set the whole thing up. Just really disappointing, with such a great cast.

Oliver Stone movies are usually good but never great, in my opinion. There's something missing, I'd say ideological liberalism (which is okay with me) trumps over artistic depth and his messages are always a poke in the eye. I wonder, how the movie would have turned out, if Tarantino could direct it, which was his original intention. The subject is definitely his turf and he's still cast as one of the writers. This is what he says about the movie:
Taken from Peary's 1998 book, in an interview with David Wild in late 1994, Tarantino was asked if he had seen the film. He replied, "No. It's just kind of out there and it doesn't have anything to do with me. I don't think I'll get much credit, and I don't think I'll get much blame. I'm definitely not looking for either. If you like it, then that's Oliver. If you don't like it, that's Oliver too."
More recently, while promoting Grindhouse on a talk radio show in 2007, Tarantino stated that when he sat down to watch the film, he was enjoying it until the "terrible Mallory Knox sitcom thing." He also went on to say that he has never watched the film beyond that part. When asked if he would ever direct his own Natural Born Killers, Tarantino said that he'd come to terms with Stone's version and that he would just let it be.

I watched The Libertine, a biopic of John Wilmot (1647 - 1680) , an incredibly witty, self-destructive poet, who was like the embodiment of the Romantic Era just before it arrived. It was a really good movie.

nbk is a great movie, in my opinion. just because it attacks the viewer with the idiot rationale and backward morality of the masses, doesn't mean that the "poke in the eye" isn't wholly justified. i think more movies need to be made, with that "poke in the eye" theme in mind.
in fact, i'd say, a "chainsaw to the brain" is required, at this point in time.
