Duel Map 2nd Season *Bonkers Cup*

Following a successful series of regular tournaments in the temple of Ashan and the resurgence of duel interest it's time for a second season to begin

Like before you pick a faction, level up your hero, learn what spells you may, buy your desired artifacts and duke it out in an epic battle! Difference is heroes are no longer the same, each has his own specialty so you'll have to adapt your strategies. Also you can choose how much of your army to buy which leaves room for extra artifacts.

Epic Duel

FEATURES

- Army strength is that of week 7.

- The sphinx gives lvl 21.

- Random artifact system. You may choose one of the three artifact areas, each having 1 relic, 2 major, 3 minor.

- There are no artifact or spell bans.

- Each side has two magic shrines from level 1, 2 and 3, plus an arcane library.

- You may choose non-native hero from the tavern.

- Marketplace is disabled so don't count on getting extra gold by selling resources or artifacts.

- Orcs can learn shatter dark for a fee of 3k gold.

- There is a magic well behind the one way so as to avoid mentor abuses like learning intelligence, visiting well and erasing it. If you want the extra mana you will be forced to keep the skill.


IMPORTANT!!

- There is no more a limit to artificer.

- Haven may not have over 32 paladins.

- Stormwind is no longer modded.




The one way teleporter leads to the arena island, many battlegrounds to choose from. Should you forget to learn spells or set favoured enemies you can town portal back.


BANNED ARTIFACTS

Magic tomes, ring of speed, staff of the netherworld, pendant of mastery, mask of equity, scrolls, unicorn horn bow, skull of Markal, rune of flame, robe and crown of Sar Issus, lion crown, armour of forgotten hero, windstrider boots, cloak of death's shadow, elemental waistband and artifacts that are not useful in the field of battle.

Ring of speed and staff of netherworld.

RACIAL RESTRICTIONS

Racials play a huge role in the game's balance so there are a few limitations in their usage.

Artificer:
Limited resources so that not all units can have lvl 3 arties.

Training:
No more than 32 paladins which means training 10 priests max. Rest can be trained freely.


Runelore:
Fortress's resources reset to 12 wood/ore, 10 crystal/sulfur, 8 for gems/mercury when you enter the one way.

Avenger:
Limited set of favoured enemies for each faction.

Necromancy:
You are allowed to pick three stacks out of the following: 100 skeletons, 60 zombies, 30 ghosts, 12 vampires, 8 liches, 3 Wights, 2 bone dragons. If you refuse the first 4 stacks it automatically picks the remaining ones.
Basic or advanced necromancy gives reduced bonus. Pendant of mastery increases the bonus.




RULES

* Duels will be decided in the best of three so you need (3) wins.

* Deadline for your games is one week. Should the need arise I will grant a few extra days. Failing to finish your games by then means you are out for the round.

* Factions are chosen randomly unless you can reach a mutual agreement.

* We use hamachi version 1.0.1.5, which can be found here.

* No resting in town during turns. Can lead to mentor mana abuses after your hero has maxed his spell points.


Feel free to add your own rules as no mirror or no playing same faction twice.


Those interested in participating post here, the tournament will begin in early October. Hoping to see some new blood along with last year's regulars Remember it's for fun so don't hesitate to join if you are not very experienced.

Welcome Since we all use msn I'll make a list in the second post to arrange games easier. Veco got himself an unlockable, keep in mind that they can be about anything be it overall attitude, unconventional strategies or doing something funny/memorable. They are not restricted to the tournament, I'll be keeping an eye on the replays

I have a couple of questions regarding the selection of town and hero. Does one of the players get to pick a faction AFTER the other? Is any hero banned? Is mirror matches banned? Are you restricted to the same town in all three matches?

You go random or you pick turns on who pick's the town first. Random is usually the way to go.
Heroes like Rutger are banned, maybe a few more, you can always check which are not available on the map itself. Wyngaal, Maeve, Anven, Helmar have their specials reduced by half.
Mirror matched are not banned, however you have the right to restart a match if a mirror occurs - same goes if you get the same town twice.
Last question is explained by the above

Those are the rules in the last tournaments here, aswell as in the ToH tournament so I guess all of the above is correct. Only Elvin can tell

I deliberately left that part vague but veco is right. Normally it's all random unless both players have a mutual agreement or use samiekl's strikeout generator. Masterpost updated.

There are certain weaknesses like dungeon over necro but even so luck plays a role in the outcome. You can choose if you want but there are may be disagreements on who picks what or waiting until opponent finally settles down on what he wants

Easier way is the aforementioned strikeout generator, randomly generates 5 matchups and you ban one per turn until one remains. But typically people play random.

Alright, I'll try to get in on this. I've played Heroes V a bit through hamachi once with someone who had a computer even worse than mine, and that's when I had my CPU fan upside down This map is very small too.

Some hints on artificer and mark of the wizard for academy players.

ARTIFICER

Academy works best with initiative/defense most of the time. Few times will they be able to take the offensive so attack minies are situational.

- Gremlins typically thrive in init/hp. Hp arties work a lot better than defense on those that have a naturally low hp, never use defense on them.

- Gargoyles are typically there to absorb damage, as such hp/def seems best. You can substitute one of the two for initiative to intercept an enemy charger like champions.

- Golems are similar in nature so hp/def. Speed if you plan to charge.

- Mages I tend to get either init/def or init/att. Archmages can benefit from morale/init since they are casters but generally not attack since shooting is mostly for battlemages.

- Djinns are nice with init/att, init/def or att/def. Depends what use you have for them, if they are to stay back and use their special probably init/def.

- Rakshasas I prefer with init/def but init/speed can be lovely. They can deal sweet damage, however move them in and they will sustain a lot of damage.

- Titans typically init/def, you want them alive for as long as possible.

Vs destructive casters there are of course protection arties. Luck can substitute attack, in fact it can be better if you already have 2-3 luck because it will raise your chances to 50%. And armour decreasing artie is better for first 3 tiers, possibly with initiative. It will not work with a mage's ranged attack if it hits many, only the targeted unit is affected.



MARK OF THE WIZARD

Motw is a most essential perk but sometimes confusing. Takes some experience to know how it works with every spell.

LIGHT

Spells that give a fixed bonus will not stack ie motw with expert endurance will not give two times +12 defense on a single unit but with resurrection you will receive double the healing power. Or you can resurrect two units at once. The same happens with offensive spells like divine vengeance, you either hit two opponents or one for double damage. Does not work with teleport.

DARK MAGIC

Except for vulnerability no other spell gets doubled effect. Puppet master cannot be cast twice as one of the castings is nullified(only one can be in effect) and frenzy has a unique property. If the mark is on a friendly unit and you cast it on an enemy both units become frenzied. casting two frenzies/blind at a time is sweet.


SUMMONING MAGIC

Fire trap now works with motw so mines appear both in the targeted space and over the marked unit friendly or hostile. Cast over a hostile unit it will summon double the amount of mines. Phantom forces will not create two clones of the same unit though they can create two different ones, say a clone for titans and one for djinns. Rest of the spells that target a unit work as usual. Arcane crystal and barrier will appear next to the marked unit though barrier will arrive in pieces, not the 3 blades in a row formation Try it, you'll see what I mean.

DESTRUCTIVE MAGIC

Every single one of them can be cast twice, even aoe(area of effect) spells. However aoe will hurt your units if they are marked too. The spell will hit the designated space and the space over the marked unit. A few interesting parts:
A fireball over a small unit will be centered on it so it will hit all it's adjacent squares. On large units: Because the area is 3x3 and large units 2x2 the tiles to the left and to the front will be also hit. Same with circle of winter and firewall is cast on the front row of large units with a tile extending to the left so avoid the left sides of marked units if you plan to use destructive magic.

Where A + L =area of effect and L= large unit. Units in A tiles will be harmed.



Circle of winter has one special property. If centered on a small unit it will never harm it but hit its adjacent tiles instead. As for meteor shower over large units it will hit the front row, one tile to the right and two to the left.

Generally mixing light with destructive is a bad idea. If you mark your own units for resurrection you'll have to change motw if you start using destructive again because they'll hit you as well. And if you have motw on enemy you'll have to spend another half turn for motw on allies for speedy resurrection.
If you are using light/summoning remember that crystal will block your marked units, never forget where your mark is and what you are casting.

@Shardik: you might want to read your HCMs (on main heroescommunity page, there will be message on top left: 1 New HCM Message.  Click on this)
@rottenvenetic: yeah, if I am playing against expert players: choose luck skill or have +luck artifact every time to have chance to win
@Elvin: good guide for hardest faction as different strat vs different opponent.  Also if one intends on buying puppet master, make sure you don't spend all the mercury on mini-arties

I was thinking - if Stormwind is nerfed/boosted (depends on how you look at it) to -20%init and -1speed, maybe Fog Veil should reduce shooter statistic in the same manner - 20%init and 10% damage? It's not like Summoning magic and especially it's perks are already some hot stuff
