Mount & Blade

So my friend found this game some time ago, and I finally started playing it. And I must say, it rocks! The battle system is great, and the game itself is quite good. Now, I am a noob at telling how good a game is, so I am just gonna say this:
Download the game, it got a free trial version that lets you play to you reach lvl8. Experience its epicness yourself

Yeah, I know! It's a realtime role playing game, where you get to travel around in an adventure map, like in heroes, but in real time (well, you can pause at any time), so the speed can be very inportant. And, also alike heroes, you get to gather an army, except you can only have a limited number of soldiers. Usually around 30 in the beginning, and depending on how long you've played and wether you have a charasmatic characyet or not, you can get about 300 (I don't think you'll get much more ). The troops you recruit are usually very weak, unless you buy mercanaries (which costs a fortune), so you have to train them to make them improve, either by getting them combat experience or by putting feat points on the trainer ability.
There's also a number of companions, that level the exact same way you do, so you could also put their feat points on trainer. Thos opens up a lot of tactical choices, as well as you have to choose these members carefully, since some of them dislike each other.

So for starters, you'll have to choose wether you should go combat or not. I'll tell you, that with a good character and if you control it the right way, you'll easily be the most dangerous person on the battle field. On the other hand you could have a much bigger army, with better morale, better trained and be able to treat their wounds quicker and more effociently, giving you a much more powerful army.

You'll also face the decision on wether to join forces with one of the five kingdoms, or go freelancing, and then you'd have to choose wether to do it on your own, or join a rebel.
There's also lot's of quests (not nearly enough), that is randomized together, so you'll rarely get the exact same mission, except a few specific quests (such as deliver messages or collect food for the kings army etc), even thought you'll get similiar quests.

So in this game, you'll find lots of choices, that will actually make really big differences. You'll also have lots of exploring and testing different methods and ways of playing. You'll face a combat system that really will challange you on the higher diffuculties, as well as being really dependant on how you develop your character.

So the conclusion is that there's lots of tactics (wide game), choices, good combat, character development as well as hard challanges on high difficulty, and hardly any resistance on lowest. You are totally in charge, on how to play the game. How ever, there's not very much actaul roleplaying (acting), but that is very rare in computer RPG's, and there's also lots of things that could be improved and changed, but that is mostly because it's made by a small company. So if you like the game or think it could become a good game, buy it!!! So gameplay wise I'll give it 8/10, since there's so many things to improve, but if I only judge it by how fun I, and some of my friends, have had, I'd give it 9,5.

It's one of the most kickass games I've played. Had it since the beta version, before Paradox produced it.

Just can't get bored with it. Actually I can't get bored with anything Paradox gets its hands on.

There was some awesome LotR mod that I've played back in the day, I recall...

Oh god! How could I not mention the mods?! Any way, if you spend to much time playing the game, and just get tired of it, there's plenty of mods!

One mod: Prohesy of Pendor

Play it, love it. For hardcore players (or noobs like me who just cheat the hell out of it and still has awesome fun)

Basically it's a fantasy mod with awesome music, tons of armour and weapons (I think they maxed it out, the game can't handle any more equipment and now they just improve them), unique factions and various sub-factions such as the Snake Cult and mysterious Noldor.

Seriously, try it out. You'll be addicted once you reach the main menu.

My thoughts on this game:

I Think the strongest part of this game is it's combat system: it really feels you are either a knight, archer, footsoldier or any combination of those. It is really fun and addictive to play. Here is a video to give a little taste of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecNHq4464PI. Also, Not only you fight, you command an army that fights with you in real time, both in open field and sieges.

This game has two dimensions similar to the heroes series: campaign map and battle. In the campaign map you move around with your army, chase wandering brigands and such to gain experience and loot, recruit volunteers from villages that you train to become better soldiers, talk to nobles to get quests, travel to castles and cities, that kind of thing. The scale gets bigger only when you swear loyalty to one of the kings of the 5 factions.

It is different from the games in the Total War series, in M&B you are not only the general, you fight too. On the other hand the epic scale of things in the Total War series is better (more troops, better maps, better factions, and so on).

Imo, the only reason to play M&B and not a game from the Total War series is the combat system in which you fight yourself and to try the really interesting mods, which is also a strong point to the game. You can add tons of mods and easily selecting which one you want to play from the game launcher. On this part of TaleWorlds forum you can get mods that are playable but still in development: http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=e858e23bb65d31519fac9e75851e9954&board=9.0.
And this one for complete mods: http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=e858e23bb65d31519fac9e75851e9954&board=63.0.

Now the game has weak points too. The sieges are just painfull and badly done. You don't have any kind of warmachines, only a stair. That's right! A stair! All your troops climb that stair to try and siege the enemy castle with hundreds of enemies firing at you. Your troops get massacred on the tiny spot they try to breach. So it takes long before you get your own castle or cities which, BTW, are yours only if the king rewards them for you. You can conquer the strongest castle and not get it as a reward. The conquests are divided amongst the nobles.

Also you cannot become the king of a faction, only Marshall or supreme general (which allows you to order other nobles around, but the only obey if tey like you, and they like you if you completed their quests). That means you can't take political decisions for your faction, the wars are randomly declared! You can take one quest that eventually pups up to try taking your whole kingdom to war but that quest rarely shows up when you visit the nobles. Sometimes months and months pass and there is no war at all, you keep chasing brigands and doing other stuff that gets repetitive.

That brings me to another point: the variety of neutrals you are going to fight is ridiculously low compared to what we see on the heroes series.

Another weak point is how they designed the economy system. Gold is the only thing in your treasury. And it is much more DIFFICULT to come by than how you get it in H5 or Medieval 2: Total war, for instance. You have to win turnaments, complete quests, loot all the time, that sort of thing. There is trade too but, imo, it is broken in this game since you receive little return from what you buy and sell and ALL the merchants have a very low ammount of cash. So if you think you are going to buy a ton of cotton from one city and sell to another to get some good profit, no deal. The merchants have only like 800 gold in their treasury. So you have to keep running around like crazy gathering information on prices, buying and selling stuff that don't really gives you a return. Army unkeep is HIGH. You have to weakly pay the salary of your troops and that easily eats away any profits.

The income from castles and villages is just meagre. The cities generate good cash but it either takes long before you can get one city or you have to both cmplete a lot of quests to your king so he likes you and conquer a lot of castles and not accept them, so that you wait to get a city as your share.

In conclusion: M&B is a great game if you want yourself doing the fighting. The earlier you lurk on TaleWorlds Forum to find mods the better. The campaign aspect of this game is fun in the beginning but as you dwelve into it you perceive it is flawed. So if I were to give it a rating to this game based on what the whole game ended up being I would give it a meagre 5/10. Now If you want a grade for only the combat part it is easily 9/10. If the sieges were better I would give it a 10/10 in combat.

Reminder: The expansion Warband is coming out soon. It will add multiplayer combat and hopefully improve the campaign aspect of the game.

Get Native Expansion for the best "be-a-king" experience. It doesn't have much to offer in terms of armour and weapons, but its economy and kingdom management is the best out there imo.

Lords & Realms Siege Ladder Project is a mod which adds extra ladders and stuff to sieges. I'm telling you, having 3 ladders instead of 1 is completely awesome. The best thing about it is that the mod works with most others too, just throw it in your preferred mod's folder and rock on.

It is even the Horde Lands mod, with orcs, elves, undead etc.It is a compilation of Magic World,Fantasy mod(I think) and you can become a king. You can name your kingdom, hire recruiters. You can play in one of these races:
Human,Elf,Dark Elf,Orc,Goblin,Zombie,Skeleton,Ghost(transparent skeleton) and Demon.
Demon and Orc are too big,and might look bad with small armors.download it at www.mbrepository.com it works for version 1.011.(I have the full 1.011).
EDIT:You can become a Warlord by conquering a castle or town of a Faction without being vassal of another faction.

The most awesome mod I've ever played.

Man, a new graphics card really made this game awesomer for me...

Before I played on medium graphics and about 20-30 FPS and 200 soldiers...

Now I play on the highest setting with the Graphical Enhancement mod with HDR lighting addon and 200 soldiers... with 60-100 FPS all the time. Sick improvement!

With higher FPS I noticed that I can actually use throwing weapons efficiently too! Javelin headshots just feel too awesome.

That's what I love about Action RPGs, it's not just how fast you can spam your hotkeys and how high your character's stats are, it's about timing and reflexes too.

Nah seriously, sudden drops happen all the time due to new soldiers loading in and other stuff, so it's good to have a bit to spare to avoid annoying quick freezes.

EDIT: They can measure how many frames our eyes can percieve? haha, wonder how many pixels we can handle.
