Wow, this thread has turned into a fantasy novel about all the lazy people who don't want to work hard and somehow still managed to get rich! That's just not reality. Sure, a few people might have gotten extremely lucky and gotten rich that way, but that's FAR from normal.

The best formula for getting rich is:

1) Keep in mind that there is no sure way to get rich.

2) Have some kind of skill, ability, service, knowledge, or whatever, that is in demand. The higher the demand and the better you are at it, the better.

3) Work your freaking a$$ off. And not some wimpy 10-hour days, five days a week like some people seem to think is long hours. Figure on 60-110 hours per week. The harder you work, the better your chances of getting rich.

3a) Working 8 hours a day and spending half of it on the internet is not how you get rich, it's how you get fired.

4) Learn to manage stress. Most likely you will have great need for that skill.

5) Get lucky.

6) Save your money and invest it wisely. Saving money is just as important as how much you make. (probably more important) Get in the habit of saving at an early age, even if you only save a small amount. Be very disciplined about this.

7) Don't plan on getting rich quickly. Plan on getting rich slowly instead. Or better yet, don't plan on getting rich at all. Most rich people don't "plan" on getting rich. They work hard to move up from where they are now (or they are just workaholics), but getting rich is not really the goal.

8) Be smart. Not intelligent kind of smart, but smart about the things you do and decisions you make. Don't let desires and emotions and wishful fantasies cause you to make bad decisions.

9) Keep a good attitude and a good reputation. Both are hard to regain once lost.

Notice that I didn't say anything about starting a business. Having your own business isn't necessary, and it's very risky. Working as an employee with a decent paying job and saving your money can easily get you rich. It's much lower risk and has a very high probability of allowing you to live comfortably even if you don't get rich. But if you do start a business, plan on working for free, or almost free, until it gets established (*IF* it gets established). If you start a business to get rich the odds are pretty heavily against you. If you just want to work for yourself and make enough money to live, then there's a pretty good chance you can do that.

There is no sure formula, but the more of the above you do, the higher the odds. (And of course different people have different ideas about what rich is.)

@DF, if the purpose of this thread is to decide what country to move to, maybe you should be looking into immigration laws, not how much money you might be able to make. You can’t just move to most countries just because you “want to”.

Also, there are lots and lots of countries where you should be able to raise your standard of living by quite a bit. But there’s really no way to truly compare pay vs standard of living in different places. There are a lot of organizations that rate such things, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rating that rated more than maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the attributes that were important to me. It’s all a matter of opinion and what’s important to you as a person. You can’t really compare unless you’ve actually lived in different places to see if things fit your lifestyle and expectations.

Again, you REALLY need to look into immigration laws before you start thinking too much about pay, jobs, warm weather and hot chicks.

And the question remains, is that income (which is still a JOKE compared to what REALLY rich people get) worth sacrificing ALL your time (10+ hours is a lot)?
Apparently, they think so. And they also enjoy their jobs.

Also, Binabik's advice seems pretty sound.
