Speaking of Israel:

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times can reveal.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran.

To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

“The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” said a US defence source in the area. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department.”

Sources in Saudi Arabia say it is common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an arrangement is in place if Israel decides to launch the raid. Despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We all know this. We will let them [the Israelis] through and see nothing,” said one.

The four main targets for any raid on Iran would be the uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Qom, the gas storage development at Isfahan and the heavy-water reactor at Arak. Secondary targets include the lightwater reactor at Bushehr, which could produce weapons-grade plutonium when complete.

The targets lie as far as 1,400 miles (2,250km) from Israel; the outer limits of their bombers’ range, even with aerial refuelling. An open corridor across northern Saudi Arabia would significantly shorten the distance. An airstrike would involve multiple waves of bombers, possibly crossing Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Aircraft attacking Bushehr, on the Gulf coast, could swing beneath Kuwait to strike from the southwest.

Passing over Iraq would require at least tacit agreement to the raid from Washington. So far, the Obama Administration has refused to give its approval as it pursues a diplomatic solution to curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Military analysts say Israel has held back only because of this failure to secure consensus from America and Arab states. Military analysts doubt that an airstrike alone would be sufficient to knock out the key nuclear facilities, which are heavily fortified and deep underground or within mountains. However, if the latest sanctions prove ineffective the pressure from the Israelis on Washington to approve military action will intensify. Iran vowed to continue enriching uranium after the UN Security Council imposed its toughest sanctions yet in an effort to halt the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme, which Tehran claims is intended for civil energy purposes only. President Ahmadinejad has described the UN resolution as “a used handkerchief, which should be thrown in the dustbin”.

Israeli officials refused to comment yesterday on details for a raid on Iran, which the Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has refused to rule out. Questioned on the option of a Saudi flight path for Israeli bombers, Aharaon Zeevi Farkash, who headed military intelligence until 2006 and has been involved in war games simulating a strike on Iran, said: “I know that Saudi Arabia is even more afraid than Israel of an Iranian nuclear capacity.”

In 2007 Israel was reported to have used Turkish air space to attack a suspected nuclear reactor being built by Iran’s main regional ally, Syria. Although Turkey publicly protested against the “violation” of its air space, it is thought to have turned a blind eye in what many saw as a dry run for a strike on Iran’s far more substantial — and better-defended — nuclear sites.

Israeli intelligence experts say that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan are at least as worried as themselves and the West about an Iranian nuclear arsenal.Israel has sent missile-class warships and at least one submarine capable of launching a nuclear warhead through the Suez Canal for deployment in the Red Sea within the past year, as both a warning to Iran and in anticipation of a possible strike. Israeli newspapers reported last year that high-ranking officials, including the former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, have met their Saudi Arabian counterparts to discuss the Iranian issue. It was also reported that Meir Dagan, the head of Mossad, met Saudi intelligence officials last year to gain assurances that Riyadh would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets violating Saudi airspace during the bombing run. Both governments have denied the reports.

Sensationalists always yap about how minor incidents like with the aid boat will cause massive global policy change towards Israel, but the situation between Israel and Iran is what could really change things. A strategic strike on Iranian nuclear facilities from Israel isn't completely out of the question.

More like potentially another proxy war in the ME in years to come. There isn't going to be a WW3.

EDIT: http://arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article65141.ece
In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, an official source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Saudi Arabia has noticed some false claims in some British media that it has permitted Israel to launch attacks on Iran using its airspace."

The source added that the Kingdom has reiterated its clear stance that it will never allow anyone to use its airspace or territory to attack any other country.

Okay nevermind, maybe.

Phhhf, the Swedes are bloody neutral.
You need to take denmark to get easy transportation over to Norway, Norway got one nice coastline and materials to build a nuke.
Sweden? Noth worth it, unless Russia invades, but they are not gonig to be interested in that for quite some time.

Anyhow, US in another proxy war? Can't the civilized world just agree to nuke US instead, so we can get rid of the problem?

That sure would be civilized, wouldn't it?

I am amazed how some people think that only firearms can be used to kill people. If you were to volunteer to allow someone to try to plant an axe in your skull I think you would find axes are indeed deadly weapons.

I find your statement to be quite disturbing on many levels. First, the thought that the US needs Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities is silly. Second, your wish for the US to be nuked is quite disturbing. Third, your thought that the rest of the "civilized" world would even consider nuking the US or that it could survive a nuclear exchange with the US is bizzare.

actually, you are, mytical.

before I'm banned, let me back up. the reason why you were attacked on sept 11 was simple. It was not that Al-queda hates the western world for all it's debaucheries, whatever they may say. no, the reason you were attacked was american intervention in other countries.

this started in the cold war, the american government sent resources and troops to support pro-western regimes against the soviets. this happens in nicugragua, Laos, Guatamala, and most famously, Vietnam. a fair few of these governments the american government supported were brutal dictatorships, and naturally, this gave way to alot of resentment.

however, the two ones that are directly links to why sept 11 are Iran and Afghanistan. in Afghanistan, the american government (reagan) supplied weapons and resources to the Taliban in order to fend off a soviet invasion. when the american troops left, those in the Taliban to helped the americans were butchered. the desperate and the dispossessed found their way to Al-queda, the extremist camp-du-jour, and were presuaded enough by promises of heaven and getting to see their loved ones, to engage in suicide bombings.

of course, the people who were flying the plains were from different nationalities, but in the same situation. and probably most interesting to the discussion, a number were palestinian. baring in mind, that in order to do this, you must have nothing, absolutely nothing, left to live for.

This could lead quite sucsincly to a poem constructed by a friend of mine. He's turkish, as well as an english major.

"I am powerless,
you are powerful,
you hurt me, abuse me,
take my land and my wealth,
you destroy my culture,
rape my creed,
and laugh as I attempt to stop you.

you are powerful,
I am powerless,
I have no helicopters
no tanks, no commandos,
no rifles, no manners,
no culture, no family
no hope.

But when I,
the powerless,
fight back, for a second,
you spit in my face, and
beat me down even more,
Terrorist, vermin, monster.

I can never win."

also, Elodin. Do you really understand what Jihad means, or are you taking the fox news definition of "Fighty, smashy, kicky, punchy on the infidels." to many muslims, that is not Jihad. I've always interpreted Jihad as a crossing cultures thing, a war of ideas rather than a death toll.

See Bixie, I have done none of those things.  Ever, in my life.  I too am powerless.  You laugh, but it is true.  If a tank would roll down my block, I would be just as powerless to stop it as anybody in any other country.  My vote is a joke.  No matter who I vote for, they are lying anyhow, and will do as they please regardless.

I do what good I can, when I can..but it makes not a bit of difference.  I too am powerless.  If I got up right now, and marched on Washington..I would be called a terrorist, shot, and no tears would be shed for me.  If I fought against my government, I would be laughed at, and killed, and not make a scratch or a dent.

My vote is a joke, my government does what it wants, and I can not even effectively fight back.  So how am I NOT the powerless one?  Yet..I AM the evil one, I AM the greedy one, I AM the 'cruel, heartless YANK'.

Despite the fact that I've never harmed a soul, even HERE (ie America), at least not on purpose.  Despite the fact that if ANYBODY of ANY nation or background came to my home, they would be treated as family, and just like anybody else.  Bah, forget it..this is so not worth the bile this junk raises in my mouth.

OmegaDestroyer: I don't hate the people, I hate the sosipolitical and the government. Destroying Washington DC should yield good enough results, or spark the 3rd nuklear war.....
unless the correct people are sitting with power afterwards.
Besides, according to wikipedia:
Quote:
Population (2009)[1][2]
- City 599,657
- Density 9,776.4/sq mi (3,771.4/km2)
- Metro 5.3 million
- Demonym Washingtonian

Besides, 6 million people as killing cap is not genocide. Blah
But what lets be wise, lets wait until the US starts another proxy war. If they do not, leave em alone.... right.. They got a too snowing big ego on the worlds political scale to be left alone, yet.
Too put it more bluntly, what should the rest of the world do with the US if they do get into another completely pointless proxy war?

Elodin: I know, but they are leaving Iraq. That leaves us to Israel which is the closest base of temporally operations. So how would they get into another proxy war(this time with Iran) without any foothold? And the rest of the "civlized" world do not need to exchange blows, bringing along a suitcase nuke would do the trick faster and cheaper, without the chance of having 200-300 relitations flying randomly around.
Any "civilized" nation would avoid the entire "missiles flying around and snowing everyone, except Hawaii and Australia".

I never said you were, but that is the thing. the world is overpopulated with people who can't seperate people and government.

also, all these events were done under reagan, it was a different time. there is no need to feel responsible and apologise for you're country. let those who have done these deeds apologise.

they probably won't though.

I understand that Bixie, the issue is that if I (an American) generalized people like that anywhere in the world I would be labeled a racist.  Pure and simple. So it is basically a double standard.  We are supposed to laugh at ourselves, but if we even jokingly lump a group of people together..it would be better for us if fire and brimstone kill us first .

People forget, that there are Americans on the forums..and for the most part we are really nice.  I just get tired of hearing the same ol shtick.
