Wrong!

Fighting alot doesn't necessarily make you good.

Not fighting at all makes you absolutely horrible, though.

Gun or not, if someone broke into your home in broad light when you're awake, he's - as JJ said - obviously aware that you may be there. Since guns are legal in US, he's also perfectly aware you may have a gun.

This means that if he breaks into your home ANYWAY, he's very confident about success. This usually means being outnumbered. In which case you are screwed anyway. Nobody is suicidal enough to break alone into someone's quarters when the owner is at home and is very likely to carry a gun. I think this is pretty clear.

If someone is breaking into your home alone or without weapons, he will most likely do so when you're away (that means your home is observed a long time and a perfect moment is picked). In which case no gun will help. If someone breaks into your home when you're sleeping, a dog and a solid alarm system will nullify all attempts anyway, no need for a gun.

And I don't think they storm your place with 10 thugs holding combat shotguns in America, lol. So, I'm taking a wild guess that there are houses being robbed when people are away or completely oblivious to a potential assault. In both cases, you can't help it.If someone catches you unaware, even if you have the gun nearby, you won't have the time to react. You will be either killed OR taken care of before you can think about taking the gun, unlocking it, aiming and shooting.

As a side note: there were tests conducted by US Police: a person with a gun doesn't have a chance against a person with a knife if the distance is smaller than X (I don't remember exactly, sadly - but it wasn't a tiny number!) meters. And it's about decently skilled Police officer, mind you. Not some random civilian that bought a gun and is caught unaware.

Conclusion: a gun won't change much. Get an alarm system. And a dog, if you don't mind.

aren't old people one of the favourite targets?

when I read that people got murdered during a theft, it's often old people, obviously because they are unlikely to defend themselves well.

Unfortunately that's true (well okay, I guess technically it would be worse for somebody with their whole life ahead of them, but there's such a dishonorable and pitiful bite to it).

Man that would suck. Being an enfeebled old guy and some young punk comes crashing into your home.

I don't think a gun is necessary. Get a ten foot, barbed wire fence, and a big dog or two. That should be enough.

Also, do you live in a nice region of town?

Again, thieves normally do not want or expect trouble.  They want to get in, get what they came for, and get out before anybody knows they are there.

Since there have been no observations on behalf of women and children here, I'd like to point out that the above comment is not always true if you are a woman.  There are folks out there who are willing to do all sorts of troublesome things to a woman and that is a common reason for a woman's house to be broken into.  If there are children present, I prefer to have a weapon in order to protect my self and my kids, since kids sometimes get caught in the fray and are mowed down as witnesses, kidnapped, or worse.

Corribus, while I don't want to discourage you from getting a firearm for self-protective purposes, I also want to suggest that having a can of wasp spray right beside your bed is a highly effective deterrent as well.  It has a range of over twenty feet, is extremely accurate, and completely blinds and chokes an intruder for several minutes.  That gives you enough time to bean him with the baseball bat behind the door, take his gun away if he has one and flee the house while calling 911.

That said, I have to disagree that keeping your weapon unloaded is a good idea.  (Sorry Gootch and others.) In my household (Cripple Creek, Colorado - Wild West), I was always taught as a child that "there is no such thing as an unloaded gun" even if it really is unloaded.  NEVER assume a gun is unloaded.  "Unloaded" guns kill lots of folks.  In addition, if someone is breaking into your house you will likely not have time to load the weapon.  If you feel the absolute necessity to secure the weapon to protect children, then mount it up on the wall out of smaller children's reach in a locked glass case.

If you're not short on reaction time during a break-in, use the key.  If you are time-short, break the glass case and fire the weapon once in a direction you have pre-planned will not ricochet, encounter any family members or rupture gas lines.  Follow the shot with a very loud, stern "GET OUT NOW OR YOU'RE NEXT."  It might sound like an unlikely thing for you to feel brave enough to do, but believe me from personal experience, when you have someone breaking into your house you've got enough adrenaline to lift large vehicles and burst eardrums with your voice alone.  While this only happened once to me while living on Capital Hill in Denver, it was completely effective.

a recent headline just caught my eye, just some more food for thought regarding kids and guns

Quote:
A young woman was rushed to the hospital after she was accidentally shot by her 4-year-old son on Monday afternoon.

Medics arrived to find the 23-year-old woman shot on her left side with a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun. She was taken to the hospital in unspecified condition. She was expected to be released some time Monday night.

Investigators said the mother was talking on the phone with her back to her son in a bedroom when she was shot. The woman told police she didn't know how her son had gained access to the weapon, and added she hadn't heard her son load the cartridge.

Wilson said some time before the incident, the boy's father, who is also the victim's boyfriend, gave the boy a shotgun cartridge so he could learn to handle it.

"The boy had expressed curiosity about firearms and his father provided him with one shotgun ammunition round," he said.

Firearms are perfectly legal here in Canada, as the country has deep traditions in hunting. There is only 1 catch, no handguns or automatics. Handguns are illegal because they are easily concealable and thus, not conducive to honest usage. Automatic weapons are only for military use, honest folk do not need a minigun to hunt, they make better terror weapons as a deer hunted with one of those things would only be a blend of pulp and bullets. A shotgun with double-ought ammunition is definitely acceptable by Canadian standards. Just don't wave it around threateningly.

Guns require licenses and extensive training to be able to use one legally, just like cars. You can do whatever you want with one on your own property as well, but it's recommended to keep your ammo and guns in separate areas and under lock and key. Just like you'd lock your car to prevent people from using it without permission/stealing it.

Now, in the case of you owning a gun, that's a personal decision. I don't own one because the level of gun violence in this country is very low. What we do own is several swords along with large kitchen knives, but we live in an area where our house is visible from all sides even in the dark so the chances of being robbed are very slim, even with the drunken people that pass by considering how close we live to Scotiabank Place.

Stories like the one above are certainly among ones why I don't own a gun, my kids are not even remotely near old enough to fully understand how to be safe with one. Now, there is much more gun violence in your country, but there are more people there as well, and less other forms of violence. Statistically, your house has a very slim chance of anything remotely happening to it unless you do something to piss of a news company that leaks your address to a bunch of crazy stalkers. But I don't think you're the type of person to do that.

May the world find you well as you reflect on your decision.

^^^That^^^

The people who do that kind of thing are probably the same ones who run into the store and leave their kid in the car with the engine running. Then when they come out and the kid wrecked the car they say something lame like "I was only going to be gone a minute". Then to make matters worse they would probably punish the kid.

It reminds me of the local story about the woman who wanted to punish her baby by making it "uncomfortably hot". So she took the baby and put it in the microwave and fried its brain, killing it.

This Connecticut home invasion story kind of has me freaked out.  I just bought a new house, and I have a family.  If someone broke into my home, I'd be pretty much screwed.  I've been mulling over buying a gun for self defense.  But I know nothing about guns, and I fear the cons might outweigh the pros.  I wouldn't even know what kind to buy, where to store it, etc.  I've mentioned it to my wife in passing but I think she thinks I'm not really serious.  Anybody have any opinions on gun ownership?

I had a family member that was in law-enforcement all his life. His recommendation for anyone wanting home-self-defense was buying a 'pump-shotgun', not a 'handgun'. He shared this;

1. Too often it is very difficult for several reasons for a person that is 'new to firearms' to become a good shot with a pistol. It takes a lot of time and practice. Most folks live in the city and that means driving to a range etc. "Police are at the ranges all the time."
2. In emergencies; fear plays a huge role.
3. Shotguns spray a wide pattern and even a scared and in-experienced gun owner is quite likely to succeed in hitting the target. He said this was "By-far" the best for wives and most husbands.
4. Most accidental deaths involve the much smaller hand-gun.

I lived rural and was no stranger to guns and yet I kept a shotgun loaded but without a shell in the chamber, knowing that if I had to use it? One pump and I'd be ready.  And of course there is always the 'safety-switch' as well. You can also 'dry-fire it' where it's been cocked and the trigger already pulled. Makes the trigger not work, so to speak, until pumped again.

I was out and about a couple of days ago and your question came to my mind but in joke form for some silly reason.

There I was ; wondering if it was time to buy a gun? I looked at the clock, the time was 3:57. I know, baaaad

Whatever you do...be safe.

This may be too late. I posted for public consumption too.

Well, I think in the rich countries with a good life condition, the military personal firearms (especially the assault rifles, machine-guns, etc) will have the almost zero practical usability for a most of peoples. Such weapons loses it's main purpose in this conditions. i.e. if you will have accidentally harm someone with this gun (which is very easy to do...), you will have a huge problems with a law enforcement system, and the gun, in this case will no help to you...
It is just for fun - to be said for short. Better buy a good training with a martial arts for yourself, in some place, than a gun.

But if you are living in a little bit worst conditions, with a poor law enforcement system. well I think the guys from such conditions already have a gun, perhaps a many guns. . .

But I have doubts, that the guns will bring to this guys the same fun as to the rich countries inhabitants. . .

Edit . . .

By I think, if you have a money, you can buy some civil firearm, and use it for fun. I am totally agreed with mr markkur, that a shotgun is a perfect in this case. Pistols is only good idea for a targeting practice and fun, i.e. if you have some kids, you can try to learn them how to shot with pistol and a shotgun, if you are do not afraid about a casualties of that . I am joking, also a shotgun is a very good choice for a hunting on most of animals. .

I do not understand of what you, mr AlHazin, talking about. But a civil weapon, is not a very good choice in many countries, if you want to defend your life, of course. What you can do with your mega costly pistol, if you are target for a machine-gun, which is far more preciously and lethal than any pistol...?

But with a device that holds the girl that is depicted on the picture above, you will have a much better chances, this weapon is a very lethal too. But such weapons, obviously, is almost useless i.e. in the New York City, US, because ... can you imagine the picture, where some civilians going to their works, in the offices, with a machine-guns on their backs, for a self-defense? They no need for such weapons, because they have a good Police Departments.

This expensive army and the corrupted police, will kick your assist so hard, that you will land on the surface of the Moon, if you will accidentally kill someone with your AK rifle, which is have a rapid fire mode, so you can easily imagine situation, when you started shooting with it into rouges, and one bullet hits the head of children on the street, right far hundred meters from you...
the weapon such AK rifles, have only "just for fun" purpose in the rich countries, for the 95% of the peoples.

Perhaps some criminals, and military guys will use it, right for what it has been made, but not a typo-civilians.
