Last I heard, Q said the combat AI is supposed to be re-worked in the next release.

During the time he was working on 3.1j , I know he was lacking some funds, I think we may have to wait a while again this time.

But as I said before, I would like to donate some fund as Magno is going to integrate his new release with the current H5.5 mod. But with the donation from a few people, there is no much difference.

A good amount of donation can act as a factor to promote the timely release and the quantity of the next version.

I recently bought TotE on Steam and installed all the campaigns (from the French site 'heroes-fr') and the enhanced AI-mod 31j.
I'm presuming the AI-mod will work with the old campaigns?
I'm hoping to play through the whole story.

So far I am in the 3rd scenario of the first campaign, which is Haven, and all seems to be ok - so far as I can tell.
But these are tutorial scenarios with scripted limited access to buildings etc.

Any comments or advice?

Thanks

You can play with old campaigns and echanced AI in MMH 5.5! In haven campaign you won't see an AI until mission 5 and mission 3 AI appear after you clean map from infernal stacks.

Just in case Quantomas sees this at some point, I want to leave a quick thank you to him for all his hard work. This mod fixes the two things that bug me the most about TOTE: the AI taking forever to take its turn, and only 6 skills. Thank you very much for solving the two biggest limiters on my fully enjoying Heroes V!

Really? I still feel like I'm watching the bar crawl to the finish at times.

This usually happens late game, but it makes sense that it would happen that way. When you and the computer start expanding and, generally, doing a lot more on your turns, it's bound to take a little longer.

I don't think I ever saw the turn times go past more than a couple seconds, and that was on my old AM3 processor with Markkur's huge maps. It especially helps how this new AI uses two cores instead of one.

Aetherrevival, you are getting the new bar at the bottom, not the old one that was towards the bottom?

APPROACHING 3.2.ALPHA

This is just a short note that work will soon pass the first AI prototype completion milestone. This will be followed by implementing a modest amount of additional code to join the AI with the game, debugging and testing, which will hopefully not take too long.

In the meantime our board at www.eternal-essence.com will be down. We will relaunch with the release of the 3.2.alpha on www.eternalessence.eu.

Q

Seriously, can we keep the faith?
We'd better ask Q if he knows that : "the better is the enemy of the good"

It was at the very bottom of the screen, yes. I remember that the screen would always be completely black with just that bar.

I used this game on an older Windows XP computer, but with what you've just told me about yours, that shouldn't have had anything to do with it.

Maybe I'll try testing it on a better computer. My processor could've just been one of the bad ones.

Man, that's unfortunate that it isn't running so fast...

My processor was a dual core AMD Athlon II X2 270. On Passmark it gets a benchmark score of 1995. If you look up your processor's benchmark score on there you can compare the speed and see if it's just an older processor.

Having a dual core processor would make a huge difference as the game normally can only use one core, but the new AI runs in a separate program that a multi core computer can run on a second core at the same time.

No, Quantomas AI only supports single core.

How about the game itself?
Can HoMM5 use multiple cores?

Yes. It definitely can.

I have a 6 cores processor die on an AM3+ socket.

It works like a charm and, does not take too much time on a XL Map, when it comes to waiting time for all AI players to do their turns.

Since, my Memory use's tracker is always on during the game's run, it rarely passes the 512MB of RAM use. So...obviously, the game will never need more than one main core, one APU core for video and, one APU core for the sound. Therefore, a mere triple core processor die with one dedicated video card will, still, do a perfect job at running Heroes 5:T.o.T.E v.3.1.

Yes, but if you look how he has it set up when the game is running, the AI runs in a separate process from the game, so the game can have one core all to itself while the AI has another core all to itself.

Unless he's changed something since I tested the AI last...

EDIT:
Unless the Game and AI processes still have to wait on each other... But the game process still uses 100% of one core while the AI is running on a separate core.

I don't remember Q saying anything about only one core. Fulano do you remember a discussion at EE about using multiple cores for different processes? I was really interested in the idea at the time, since I've ran the A.I. since it was released on a Quad with no problems.

@markkur All I remember is commenting on his forums how splitting the game into two processes like he did lets the game use two cores and he agreed.

The game itself only runs on one core, and the AI process only runs on one core, but because they are separate processes Windows can run them on two different cores at the same time.

I watched task manager on a second monitor while playing the game in the past. I remember something like the game using 100% of one core, and the AI using 30% of a second core. I believe you can use Task Manager to lock the processes to two separate cores to test it easier. (It actually makes a single core game run a tiny bit faster if you lock it to one core).

I may fire up my old computer and test it, as I admit I haven't played Heroes 5 in a while.

EDIT:
Yes, on my wife's Dual Core 2007 Macbook I just tested it on a large 8 player map. This was on Windows XP.

Once you end your turn for the first time the game starts the AI process. The Game process uses 48-50% of the processor (meaning it's using a full core). The AI process uses 2-20% of the second core. I can lock the processes to run on the two separate cores without issue.

This means that the game effectively is a dual threaded program, even if that wasn't the plan to start with. Now what would be amazing is if the AI could be making calculations during the player turn to speed up the AI turn even more.

EDIT2:
@Aetherrevival
What did you have the look ahead set to? I realized mine was only on normal. This AI tended to rock me if it wasn't on the easiest settings so I never had it set to the slowest setting.

That the game can run on a multi-core machine does not mean it can use multiple cores. From other post it seems clear that HOMM5 itself uses only one core.
