I'm experience a graphical issue. The turn display runs along the bottom of the screen, almost out of sight. It's actually kind of cool in that you don't have the loading bar right up in your face, but it just isn't ideal, insofar as it's not simple to track player turns.

What makes you think that a progress bar in the center of the screen makes it more simple to track the opponent's turns?

I did a lot of testing with the open build to observe the AI and there is a lot to watch. I got tired of always having a progress bar popping up sort of right in my face.

Still, there is a bug here. It is planned to have the progress bar move smoothly and gradually with the AI turn processing. Currently its resolution is not that good and it rather appears stuck most of the time. If this is resolved, would that ease your concern?

Q I agree, the load bar shouldn't take centre stage. I'm just suggesting that perhaps it should be slightly higher/more visible than it is currently.

As far as I'm aware, casual gamers are a considerable driving force in the market. Surely one could argue that few casual gamers are approaching H5 or its mods, but DLC & mods are becoming more and more appealing to casual gamers (especially with mods coming out like this one) as an alternative to underdeveloped (read poorly developed) retail releases.

Making mods that can be simple for rookies to apply and understand whilst challenging and customisable for veterans would surely maximise its appeal to developers - which I think you stated as an aim of this project.
Part of this might include keeping certain glaringly obvious (bordering on absurd) aspects of the game relatively intact. In this case I'm talking about the loading bar, which as you rightly say is far too conspicuous. I just think there could be a happy middle-ground between THIS IS A LOADING BAR SHOWING YOU THAT THE COMPUTER IS DOING STUFF!! and the nuanced play of colour you have currently at the bottom of the screen.
If someone could be bothered, perhaps the load screens and bars themselves could be completely overhauled to serve multiple functions at once!

Sorry for being so verbose, I get carried away so easily once I start writing. It's why I'm so hesitant to join forums!

Hello Quantomas,
In 1rst thanks for your hard work.
In 2nd the aspect ratio with widescreen monitor is always very strange with the latest version (3.1.7).

3.1b fixes a lot of issues.

Among others it includes a new smoothly growing progress bar. Feedback and ideas are welcome!

Best Build Yet, AI looks like something you wouldn't want to come accross in a dark ally.

Few Bugs i'm having.

Major one, it won't let me load any saved game I started fresh for this new AI and every save game crashes.

Minor - Won't let me choose anything but aggressive AI.

Minor - I agree with TheBaron, I would like a larger progress bar, its so small now its difficult to see which AI is taking there turn when you havn't revealed there part of the map.

Is it possible to let people choose what size progress bar they want?

Other then that love the speed, playing on a XXL RGM and was very smooth, AI was grabbing easy stuff first was great.

Thanks for all the hard work!

@Cynric
No problems with savegames here, neither from previous versions nor from the 3.1b build. Maybe a problem related to a specific setup? It's not enough information to diagnose from here, and I normally do not reply to posts that are unclear in this respect, but I remember your great research with the 3 GB enhancer.

The map settings determine whether you can override the AI type setting. I am looking into how this can be enabled for all maps regardless.

Regarding the progress bar, it's looking neat and easily discernible on my machine. Maybe there is an issue that we are not talking about the same thing, that it might look different on some machines. Can you provide a screenshot?

@Markus404
Please don't post issues that are already reported, particularly if they are listed already in the scheduled tasks. These posts only make the thread longer. Still thumps up, for reporting at all.

@Markkur
Can you update the first post with a direct link to the scheduled tasks so that people have a one-link-stop to check out what's being worked on?

Probably not a bug, I accidentally made border guards too strong so there was no way to leave the starting zone areas and after many many months of playing I was just curious on how the AI was doing and I noticed that the A.I (well all but 1) stopped building up their city, so they had low income and I am guessing stopped building up their city, they had plenty of money saved up so I am sure they either stopped buying units or didn't have the buildings made to buy the more expensive units... I  was always out of money when I bought my units.

Edit: I was testing with the conflux mod with all defensive AI's on max difficulty (had no issues besides above which may not be a bug since there was no way to kill border guards without saving up units for years), incase this helps I uploaded my map and save here.

multiplayer bug

I play with another human player along with computers.  We were both not satisfied with the former AI and downloaded your patch.  All things went fine the first turn.  We play via lan.  Then on the second turn onwards everything is laggy and choppy on BOTH of our high end comps.  Help us.

We have tried with random and your maps.  We use simultaneous turns.

after every action there is an hourglass for 5-15 seconds before either one of us (independently) can execute another action.

Just tested with non simultaneous turns, still choppey laggy slow

When playing with no other human players everything seems to run smoothly.

Hi Quantomas,

Your AI seems to have issues with some large custom maps. I tried using the AI (3.1b) with the map that shipped with RPE and it immediately crashed the first AI turn. I admit this map is huge it is around 1,02 mb compressed size which is giant for a H5 map. Nonetheless I have been using it with the stock Ai for years. Could you look into it?, here is the map:

Hello,

I just recently reinstalled HoMM 5 ToTE after seeing this mod. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to try it yet. The reason being that when I start the mod using H5_AIadv_31b.exe, I am greeted at the main menu with what looks like a scrambling of textures. Also, there seems to be odd text in areas of the screen. I cannot use the menus, as they are flashing and being scrambled as well. I took a screenshot, but oddly enough the screenshot was perfectly fine; it didn't reflect at all what I was seeing on the screen.

In addition, when I run the game normally through the original .exe, I do not experience this problem.

I am running windows 7, I have bought the game on steam and thus am using the files from my steam file location. GFX is ATI mobility Radeon HD 4870.

EDIT:
I tried running in windowed mode; this solved my problem. However, I would still like to get it working for full-screen mode, if anyone has any insights.

P.S. Looking forward to enjoying the awesome AI!

Sounds like your video card might be going out, but you can try a fresh reinstall of the game and see if that helps.

Thanks Magnomagus, for this crash report. This has been resolved with 3.1.8.

It appears that the original game never expected that the AI will probe what buildings can be build in neutral towns. In fact, it crashed when the AI inquired whether the town can build a capitol.

This means this bug fix applies to all maps that have neutral towns with a town level high enough to build a capitol within a week. If you experience a similar crash and have 3.1b or 3.1.7 or earlier, please check whether 3.1.8 or later resolves this issue.

If this problem persists on a map with 3.1.8 or later, please post a bug report with the map attached (if it is not a standard map or one of our reference maps), so that we can reproduce the bug and solve the issue.

I would like to mention an old 3.1 issue that you might be able to solve. It is not an issue related to your AI. It is a problem reported by many people and it occurs only on 64bit systems with 4gb or more memory. The problem is that the ground textures are completely washed out after a map reload even if the texture settings are set to very high. It still exists in 3.1.8 beta.

It was discussed here:

http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=17780&pagenumber=39

The solution I proposed was addressing only 3gb to the system, so it was not a real solution just a workaround. At least it is clearly a memory issue.

I have a test machine with 64-bit Windows and more than 4 GB and I haven't noted this effect yet. So the conditions need to nailed done a bit further. Other than that, if there are issues that only happen on certain machines, I might not be able to reproduce those. Ideas?

It is not related to a specific driver or directx version. I think the problem only occurs when a huge memory load is required. On my machine it only seems to occur when texture settings are high or very high. Also my resolution 1920x1200 and on that giant HoA map it occurs all the time. Changing AA and AF settings doesn't make the problem dissappear. Maybe you should try to load HoA with maximum settings and hit the restart mission button several times, maybe it will happen to you?

Solution from an user at ubi.fr.

My Docs\...\User*.cfg (* = depends of the extension)

=> setvar gfx_depth_tex_resolution = 512

Replace 512 by 2048.
