What is the difference? One is simply a town window that covers the whole screen.

Am i the only one not getting it?

yes

no offense, but its people like you that will probably end up QQing about it when you actually play the game and its to late and you notice that the whole town aspect of Heroes has been destroyed

unless you didnt care at all about the towns in the previous games

No, Its just that no one has been able to explain to me what the difference between a town window and a town screen is, because from all the pictures i have seen they look the same.

And if no one CAN explain the difference i see no reason to whine...

@Lucky_Dwarf: it's just a matter of personal liking. Are you asking for the reasons behind a TASTE?

You got it all right: that is the new town window compared to an old town screen. If you see NO BIG DEAL, I guess our reasons wouldn't matter or even sound absurd to you.

Anyway, one objective thing is that windows and screens are NOT the same. With the new system, you remain on the adventure map, with a semi-transparent window showing a non-interactive image and some shortcut buttons; with screens instead you LEAVE the adventure map and VISIT your town in full screen with interactive buildings.
Does it feel the same to you? "NO DEVIATION IN CONCEPTS"?

It is not a gamebreaking/gameplay-related issue, but it means a lot for many of us who've always enjoyed town screens. If you have a different opinion it's fine, but don't act arrogant saying "nothing to whine about" or "is this all you are crying about?". Yes it is. Actually the worst change in H6 judging from "popular response".

Whining: Constantly complaining about idiotic things for idiotic reasons for the sake of complaining. The fans are not 'whining' as you stated above.

- A town window is a small window which contains a picture (2D or 3D) of that town. You can't interact with anything of the town. It's just an image, nothing more. It's boring.

- A town screen is a fullscreen picture/scene that allows you to interact with the buildings. A town screen looks lively and beautiful.

well, it's not exactly that the town window looks bad, but it looks like a painting. which makes me feel... like I'm watching a painting, and not like I've just entered a town.

^ This ^
Heroes is empty without the atmospheric, interactive, full-screen town screens; they have been an important part of the game experience since the very beginning.

Now that they've delayed the game, they might just as well use the time to construct proper town screens.

P.S.
I haven't posted in like 3 years; the town screen fuss made me exit my cave. Not that I posted much back then anyway

I like town screens as much as all of you, but the town windows seem OK as well, especially considering we have till September for them to improve.

Personally, I think it feels a little small, but I never spend much time in the town screens anyway (even when recruiting creatures), so it doesn't really matter that much to me.

So in four months they went from this:

To this:

The only thing that's changed is the artwork (keeping in mind they are different towns and on different zoom levels).
They went from a static picture to something reminiscent of a flash based internet pop-up ad.

I'm dreading to see how small the window will appear on my 1920x1200 resolution screen.

Exactly this.

@lucky_dwarf: You can judge from the relative size of the hero and creature icons that the total size of the window has not changed at all from the early screenshot in the post above mine.
The town window we were shown yesterday is obviously a zoomed image (bottom, top and sides are cropped). Which means that entering your town on any bigger resolutions (yeah, the ones where people should enjoy good games most!) is merely going to cause a small window to pop up that covers less than 50% of your screen.
The reason everyone is complaining should be more than obvious.

Yeah gotta say that looks pretty lacklustre.

One thing that really made the atmosphere in previous incarnations was animations. I can't really tell from the screenshot but it's looking pretty lifeless in there.

In terms of simple changes, somewhat scalable 2d graphics, animations and blacking out the adventure map in the background would make a pretty huge difference.

However what I'd really like to see, and what I'm surprised wasn't done in the first place is using the existing (very lovely indeed) town models. Dramatic zoom on the adventure map into the town, trigger lots of extra cool animations (creatures doing their thing, signs of life, etc) and have the interface appear over that. That would own.

No, you're not the only one. I concur completely.
And I would even go so far to say that the shown window is a lot better than the "bunch-of-buildings-on-a-tiered-hill" towns in HeroesIV.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I've always played on a relatively big screen. Cause I never had HeroesIII fill my entire screen. Cause when it did, it looked stretched and distorted.
And for the looking at a painting argument, I've always felt like that. So this is hardly a change for me.

In HeroesV the town covered the entire screen. Yes, but getting to the buildings was convoluted for me, having to cycle through the town and fidn the actual thing I was looking for, so I always used the interface there. I enjoyed the fly-by animations every now and again and I would actually take the time to do a few flies through the town. And it was fun to do so in several stages of development. But mostly I stopped the animation and get down to business.

So I agree with Lucky-Dwarf completely that the only difference is that it doesn't cover the entire screen this time round. Which, again, is nothing new for me.

This pathetic picture can't be qualified as neither a town window, neither town screen I was hoping at least for some beautiful artwork, but the Inferno town is totally uninspiring! Like somebody pointed out in the previous posts - "just some organic mess"... the necropolis town (either a placeholder or not) has the same problem...the town looks empty, there is no atmosphere, I can't imagine that somebody lives there (be it a demon or a ghost). In my opinion the towns must resemble something like the Wizard and Haven towns from H5. You must have a feeling that it's a inhabitable place after all!! And that it's a TOWN, not a VILLAGE or just some DIRTY HOLE! For example the new Haven town looks more like a small village, or some kind of remote, small and insignificant castle.

I have my own theory for the motives, based on the official Ubihole interviews / responses we have witnessed in the last months.

One of the new directions they are giving the Heroes franchise seems to be the simplification of the strategy/RPG/management formula that has been the trademark of the game since its beginnings.

As Erwan LeBreton said in one of the interview clips himself , in Heroes 6 they are focussing on the strategy/RPG part of the ame and remove as much of the resource/kingdom management elements as possible. Or, to put it in his own words, "we tried to reduce management, especially micro-management. We want the player to feel like a commander in battle and not like some town builder"
Here are the main manifestations of this change as I see them:
a)less rare resources
b)less cat-and-mouse due to the area-of-control system
c)less tiers in town and simpler, toned-down towns in general

I perceive the new town screens to be a direct consequence of point c).
Smaller town windows means that towns automatically play a smaller role in the game and players shouldn't waste as much of their time on them as they did in previous installments of Heroes.

My own views on this absurd change should be obvious, I won't bore everyone with the same story again.
And although I am willing to try out points a) and b) above, for me towns (and the correponding town screens) are sacred. Having a detailed, interactive, gloriously represented town is an integral part of the Heroes experience. Playing Heroes means you have to be a "town builder" sometimes, that's how it is.

And as a final remark to Ubihole:
Have you ever considered why youtube features every effin' town screen from every Heroes game along with their town themes?
Simple answer: BECAUSE PLAYERS LIKE THEM

well i think in this case it is not only a "personal opinion"
you guys should concider the Vital importance of Town-Screens to the game atmosphere!!!
i mean for example i do not play multiplayer, so obviously it is not important for me..
but i am not yelling with foam in my mouth that any news related to Multiplayer are just insignificant and "whatta hell is it all about", cuz i do realize that it may be important for others.
So to all "i don't care" or "what's the big deal" people i would recommend to be more conciderate if not to us, then to legacy of HoMM game!
thank you
