Don't you think It's just a temporary image for the beta? The town screen testing is not a part of the beta-test. So Maybe Beta just will not spoil the beauty of the actual town screen for us before the game will be released?

It's just the same model as on the map! No other buildings. And from that perspective the castle walls will close all other parts of the town. + rough cutting of the textures on the sides of current screen.

Do anybody really think that They will allow such ugly screen to be presented in the game, where other graphical part is near to excellency?

Looking at the image again, I do now notice some serious texture clipping within the image (not sure how to describe it), when compared with everything seen on the adventure map, the production values on this screen seem WAAAAAAY below par.
Look at the meadow surrounding the village, it's horribly pixely, especially near the tree-line.

You sir give them too much credit. It's obvious from the start that the town screens are among their greatest failures, they just keep following the trend. And even if you are right, it's quite an idiotic advertisement to show something which will certainly be hated by most of the people - it's far better to put Error 404 - this town screen does not exist in Ashan instead of this... thing.

It looks so out of place that I would be willing to credit it as a temporary solution, but with no assurance that anything better is coming it's difficult not to worry.

We've seen the same terrible town window for over 9 months now. Nothing has changed, despite numerous promises.

Yes, it will be this terrible, and no, Ubihole don't see the it as a big problem. I just hope many of the "optimists" will face reality in the beta and actually react to this "thing".

I'm one of those optimists I guess, because I think that usually the hysterical ranting over this is comically overblown.

I think the general interface is an improvement. Even after playing the game for many years I still sometimes forget where stuff is on H3 town screens, and H5 was the most convoluted interface outside of terrible computer scenes in 90's movies. Plus I don't mind the idea of a town window as opposed to a screen, I actually think it could work well if done right.

However, that dinky little thing is just not working at all. It functions correctly, but there's no soul. There is very little scene to disguise the behind-the-scenes mathematics of the town strategy and it just comes off boring and dry. Looking at any town screenshot from any of the previous games gives an immersive impression and this just doesn't...

What seems to be missing is a grand scale. With the old town screens, we were usually at a high angle, with a large area to look over with a lot of detail. From the low-angled perspective it feels small and unimposing. It doesn't look like there is much going on there, and it doesn't look like there is room to have much more going on there. Do later views zoom out and see more land or something?

Another thing is what I've said in this thread and elsewhere time and time again: that does not take up enough of the screen. Having scalable graphics for the towns to make the window able to take up more of the screen or be full-screen would make a HUGE difference. I have personally worked with a number of image scaling algorithms and I have a hard time believing that it is impossible or unreasonably difficult to scale down higher resolution images for lower resolutions. However, even if it were for whatever reason, there is still the option of having multiple versions of the graphics for different resolutions.

It just seems like they are making the typical and common mistake of "dumbing-down" the experience with the thought that it will bring in more people. In which case is almost always not true for blockbuster games.

I really can't believe they are down to 4 minerals... just only 4? And on top of this they go to put zero town screens. It's not something that worked that great for Age of Empires I don't think. All these complaints aside it looks great to me, but they really better not have a glitchy game this time.

What has changed since Cologne 2010?

Nothing!

We spoke, we voted, we made our views clear. What did we get?

NOTHING!

No official response. No sane answer why would developers do such a thing. No communication whatsoever. This is without a doubt absolute worse case of publishers ignorance of fan base. Even with pushing back release date we didn't get any response is anything going to be done about this.

There was time, there were resources, there was fan input and they didn't do absolutely nothing about it except enrage us with continuous stream of pathetic window screenshots.

I'm disgusted with the treatment of such loyal fan base.

There seems to be a fairly general consensus on this, so I find it almost shocking that they wouldn't have just delayed the game again at some point to add in town screens. It's bad enough that they didn't plan on having them in the first place, but to just completely discard them from the game is kinda sad for someone who loves this series--it reminds me when Blizzard didn't plan on having chat channels in Starcraft II, it really just threw people off. After all the awesome things they are adding to this game, is it really that hard to continue a staple to the series the first time around?

I think it's also important to remember what those who are not so into the games believe. I think most of us have voiced our opinions pretty clear in this thread so far. But one important thing that has been mentioned, and should not be forgotten, is the memorabilia of the town screens. As mentioned several times in this thread one of the most (and perhaps the most) memorable things from H3 (and perhaps H5) are the town screens. And when I talk about the game with people that are fans of the series, but perhaps not to the extent as many in this place, it's fascinating to see what they are interested about. What most often catches their attention is that the screens now are only windowed, not full screen, and that the buildings are not clickable.

Hello all, I think that might be addressed towards me.

I just wanted to put my input here having read most of the thread...creating a profile just for this (and many more). I am not a Heroes fanatic, and won't pretend to be. I was given HOMM 2 about 10 years ago when I was 6, and played it over and over and over again. I then realised that there may be more HOMM games about a year ago and bought HOMM 3 & 5. I love both of them and am a sucker for the 3D rotating goodness of H5 (I can stare at it listening to the music for hours...especially Sylvan).

For me, (a fairly passive fan of the series) the soul of the game is unaffected by the resource changes...I can live with those. The towns, heroes and creatures are most important to me. H5 was knocked by some for 3D but I loved it; it brought the game to life, and I felt awestruck considering I was used to the (still brilliant) town screens of HOMM 2 only a few days previously. The whole window idea (I guess you've all seen the Inferno screenshot on the Ubi site) seems horrendous to me. I love the feeling of becoming immersed in the game, and a window doesn't cut it. I understand that it can become unnecessary since you may only spend a few seconds inside, but at least make it an option.

Sorry if that was a bit long-winded, and covering what had already been said...but like I said, I'm new here and felt like expressing my opinions.

it looks exactly the same as in the most recent picture in this thread. only that it looks ten times worse in-game

Ya. They're bad. I still think they're placeholders though, all they are is the 3d model of the adventure map town from a different viewpoint against a blurry background.

The rest of the game isn't that cheap and mostly looks very nice, so I think they'll change.
