Godawful semifinal. I really am amazed how we went through but judging by the quality of the songs, I should not be. Everything was mediocre, save for a few shows (not songs but all-around effects). I did see some vain attempts at rock... So sad.

Is this really anything worth watching? A friend of mine is the local liason for the polish contestant and he's backstage and constantly everywhere with them he told me he could probably get me tickets if I wanted to but lol...it's the eurovision contest for christ sake it's such a sad event. They come together to celebrate the murder of music.

If you want a song for Hungary that suits for English as well, this a pretty good choice with a good creative and an English composer. And please don`t admit that Gabi Toth is the Hungarian Pink unless you lived here. She`s a big time Pink poser b*tch even if she has good voice (which she obviously has) but the only reason she was able to survive here is that she turned into a celebrity wh*re. Check out her sister, Vera (or Veronika, which name you`ll find) her voice is even more beautiful and practically nobody knows her.
However, I don`t say you couldn`t find a better Hungarian song if you wanted to (an idea is to check one of my older posts in What are you listening to...)

I guess the best ones from this semi (which was in average quite terrible, yeah) are Serbia and Finland (apart from Hungary ofc)

I hated Greece's song, in fact I hated it even more than Sweden this year. (I may reconsider tomorrow evening though). The again, it is only one of the two songs that I despised that made it through.

Russia gets a pass for me because if it's catchy chorus, but overall, I wasn't impressed. and Eh, it is RUSSIA, so it is going to qualify no matter what D:

Iceland's song does little to me, but at least the could SING properly (or rather: altogether), so I thought they completely deserved to qualify for the next round.

Idk whether I said it here (or on the Survivor board where I've also been discussion Eurovision), but the only (potentially) sad casualty for this round is Norway (which is okay at best), and to a much lesser extend, Turkey.  (although I'm enjoying the fact that a diaspora-dependant country like Turkey FAILED to qualify way to much, acolpwnt so much b!tches! )

Honestly, the qualifications for this semi (which was, as many people stated, indeed TERRIBLE) were a LOT better than I personally would have anticipated... so I will not complain about the actual results.

Finlands song has really grown to me.
I am 110% sure that it will be a pretty big radio hit here.

I will never understand why Russia gets so many votes. So all those Eastern European countries were part of Soviet, and then they left. So if they automatically vote on Russia all the time, why not just become one with it?

Also if my favorite Finland wins, isn't it like Sweden wins too because he speaks swedish and has a swedish name? Axel Ehnström?

95% from the songs from the 1st semifinal lacked in quality ... Georgia, Russia, Greece, Hungary and Azerbaijan were ok but no one impressed me, or maybe just in some parts of the song. I'm waiting for the second one, it should be better.

btw, I'm still asking the same question over and over every year: How some crappy songs go into the final and I'll see them on saturday but they have NOTHING special. Tell me, do you think Switzerland, Iceland or Lithuania deserved to qualify, or it's again the stupid votes ?

Switzerland, Iceland and Lithuania were all slow songs and to me, boring, but they stood out from the euro-disco crap with singers who could not actually sing on their own. At all.

But I am so sad that Norway is out. ((

Now my hope is Finland! I am certainly not an enviromentalist, but his song is beautiful and does not have mindless lyrics like "STOP DON'T SAY THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE" or "BOOM BOOM CHAKA CHAKA" or "RANDOM RUSSIAN SPEECH AT THE START OF A BAD POP SONG"

And the lyrics of Da Da Dam are so true. That yes, the planet is kind of dying but nobody is caring. And I am one of those. I do not care since my county is not a big contributor to the death of Tellus.

I like Finland for reasons I'd rather keep for myself... but I do like it and will be rooting for it in the finale.

Additionally, I am looking forward to the following countries in the Second Semi:

Bosnia/Herzegovina
Netherlands
Slovakia
Romania
Estonia (Superficial reasons, mostly)
Latvia
Ireland (because it is such a class A example of Eurotrash I appreciate it for it awfulness <3)

Also, I have listened to all the songs once more and I'll be officially rooting for U.K. (in spite of my deep, near-rabid hatred towards boysbands ) to win this thing. It gets better after every rewatch.

I dislike most of those 'slow' songs, like Xerox said, they're boring! Last year was the same, in the semifinals were some songs like that or some ballads which made me sleep , but also some great ones (remember Azerbaijan and Belgium). I still hope that from the second semifinal will qualify the more-energic ones, or, as I said above: the ballads and slow songs which have something special and make me feel like I'm watching a true song contest , not just a bad joke.

The thing about ballads is that they NEED to have a credibility of sorts. The song advances at a slow pace, ergo the preformer cannot benefit from a catchy rhythm, gimmicks or overbearing smoke-and-mirrors musical machismo.

As a result, ballads only work if the singer puts enough EMOTION in the song for the listener to believe it. Great lyrics don't hurt either (as a matter of fact, it is actually ESSENTIAL to have touching, or at least lyrics that contain a touching "message" of sorts). That is the foundation for an amazing ballad that doesn't bore. You've gotta make the audience believe in you and in what you are telling them through the song.

Austria's song for this year is an example of such a ballad, as was Belgium's entry for last year. These songs *work* and never bore.

Lexxan is spot on. With a catchy song, you don't really have to put much work into lyrics. Well you do but that isn't what gets people's attention. It's the beat, the melodies...that's what makes it stick into people's mind. Like Lex said, if you don't put emotion into a Ballad then don't even try it. Ballad's are slow for a reason...it tries to get audiences to connect with the lyrics, to connect with the meaning and if the singer does a horrible job with singing it without any passion, without any emotion, well...it fails.

Well I am absolutely FOR everyone singing in their NATIVE language, and yes Toth Gabi has a great voice, and it's a shame that she got "sold" to show business, but that doesn't mean she can't go to Eurovision and kick the scene's ass with a energetic, vocally correct HUNGARIAN song.
And I DO know Toth Vera, yes it's a shame she isn't too known (even in Hungary, I'm Polish and live in the UK, I suppose she might be known in neighbouring countries like Romania).

What do you think about Hien? She's IMO a talented young singer.

I want to post this list again if no one minds, also I am 100% that if any of the singers from my list represented the corresponding country, that country would have a very high chance of winning, while ALSO keeping their language.

A Swede's thoughts on Swedish destruction and other Eurovision related things.

I liked Turkey's song but the singer couldn't sing. This makes Georgia the most competent rock band, and therefore they are great. At least the rapping isn't as misplaced as it could be (see Greece). Perhaps it was a clever move by Georgia to get a new singer for their band.

Other good songs include most of the finalists like Serbia, Hungary, Finland, Azerbaijan, Iceland and Switzerland. They are all catchy.

Finland is probably best. It has a guitar, a singer and a melody.

Norway's Haba Haba is Happy but too simple.

Azerbaijan is a Swedish song in disguise and so repititive that it stucks.

Sweden is also involved in Russia's song but I quickly forgot it anyway.

Switzerland should listen to this one.

Portugal's song has melody in it somewhere, but is still incomprehensible. Is it good or bad, who knows?

Lithuania is the sleepiest song ever. Other worst songs include Armenia, Malta, Poland, and Croatia. Songs in this genre has to be really well crafted like Hungary's or they are just nothing.

If you miss any country specific comments it's because the rest of the songs failed to make any lasting impressions.

Re: plagiarism, one of the most obvious instances of song theft ever happened in the Swedish competion. Listen to Green Day 21 Guns and Nicke Borg Leaving home. Scandal!

I'd like to inform you that Eric Saade competed last year with a piece of music called MANBOY.

In my opinion is POPULAR a big step forward! It's approaching the  category called "music", but I'm not certain that it qualifies.

My friend loves MANBOY. Last year he was working on a stage where Saade performed MANBOY, but on week of the performance we were on a weekend trip in another city. This was very hard for my friend:
- The day before the performance he constantly repeated every possible version of "Tomorrow will Eric Saade perform where I work but I'm gonna miss it".
- The day of the performance he constantly repeated every possible version of "Today is Eric Saade performing where I work but I'm gonna miss it".
- The day after the performance he constantly repeated every possible version of "Yesterday Eric Saade was performing where I work but I'm gonna miss it".
- And from the moment Swedish Television published the performance on their web site my friend played the piece of music non stop on his iPhone.

This was a difficult time for me and my brother. With this I approve destroying Eric Saade a bit.

You're completly right. If Turkey's singer was the guy from maNga, and if it had more energy, it would have been an awesome rock song from Turkey (again) ! I also like Georgia, it's one of my favourites.
